Good News Reflection Sixth Sunday of Easter

When the Ascension of the Lord is cele-brated the following Sunday, the second reading and Gospel from the 7th Sunday of Easter may be read on the 6th Sunday of Easter.

Acts 8:5-8, 14-17 Ps 66:1-7, 16, 20 1 Peter 3:15-18 John 14:15-21

In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus tells us that the Holy Spir-it is our "Advocate". Some scholars translate the word to "Counselor". In the original Greek, it means "called alongside". It's closely related to the verb "parakaleo" ("to call" or "summon") from which we get "Paraclete" as a name for the Holy Spirit. It referred to a legal assistant, a courtroom advocate. Jesus is telling us that the Holy Spirit is our legal assistant when we're falsely accused, misjudged, or wrongly condemned.

Notice that Jesus refers to our Advocate as the "Spirit of Truth". No matter what other people think about us, no matter what wrong things they say about us, no matter what opinions they have of us, God always knows the truth. And the truth that sets us free from their bad attitudes is this: It's only God's opinion that really matters. And his opinion of us is better than we think it is!

We judge ourselves more harshly than we should, and this is why we worry so much about how others are judging us. If we honestly examine our consciences, seek reconciliation with God for our sins during the Penance Rite at Mass or in the Sacrament of Confession, and strive to improve, then Jesus says to us what he said to other sinners: "I do not condemn you; go and sin no more."

Don't you sometimes wish that Jesus would come physically to your rescue when you're misjudged? He said that he will not leave us orphans -- his Holy Spirit will always be with us when we need to be defended, telling us the truth about our goodness.

Even when we sin, the Spirit of Truth defends us to our heavenly Judge: "Look, this precious child really does want to be holy." To us, the Spirit says, "Let me teach you how to grow in holiness and avoid this sin." And to others, the Spirit says: "If you love me, love this good friend of mine."

Questions for Personal Reflection: How have you been unjustly accused and unfairly judged? Imag-ine what the Holy Spirit is saying to the Father about that. And to those who condemned you. What is he saying to you about you?

Questions for Group Faith Sharing: Describe a time when God defended you. How did the Advocate manifest his help? Who learned more from it: you or your accus-ers?

Cuando la Ascensión del Señor se celebra el domingo siguiente, la segunda lectura y el Evangelio del 7º Domingo de Pascua se pueden leer el sexto domingo de Pascua.

Hechos 8, 5-8.14-17 Sal 66 (65), 1-7.16.20 1 Pedro 3, 15-18 Juan 14, 15-21

Jesús te está dando el mejor socio posible

En la lectura del Evangelio de este domingo, Jesús nos dice que el Espíritu Santo es nuestro "Abogado". Algunos eruditos traducen la palabra como "Consejero". En el griego original, significa "llamado junto". Está estrechamente relacionado con el verbo "parakaleo" ("llamar" o "convocar") del cual obtenemos "Paráclito" como nombre para el Espíritu Santo. Se refiere a un asistente legal, un defensor de la corte. Jesús nos está diciendo que el Espíritu Santo es nuestro asistente legal cuando somos falsa-mente acusados, juzgados mal o condenados injustamente.

Nótese que Jesús se refiere a nuestro Abogado como el "Espíritu de Verdad". No importa lo que otras personas piensen de nosotros, no importa qué cosas malas dicen sobre nosotros, no importa qué opiniones tienen de nosotros, Dios siempre sabe la verdad. Y la verdad que nos libera de sus malas actitudes es ésta: es sólo la opinión de Dios lo que realmente importa. ¡Y su opinión sobre nosotros es mejor de lo que creemos que es!

Nos juzgamos con más dureza de lo que deberíamos y es por eso que nos preocupamos tanto por cómo nos están juzgando los demás. Si examinamos honestamente nuestras conciencias, si buscamos la reconciliación con Dios por nuestros pecados durante el Rito Penitencial en la Misa o en el Sacramento de Confesión y nos esforzamos por mejorar, entonces Jesús nos dice lo que dijo a otros pecadores: "No te condeno; vete y no peques más."

¿No deseas a veces que Jesús venga físicamente a rescatarte cuan-do eres mal juzgado? Él dijo que no nos dejará huérfanos - su Es-píritu Santo estará siempre con nosotros cuando necesitemos ser defendidos, diciéndonos la verdad sobre nuestra bondad.

Aun cuando pecamos, el Espíritu de la Verdad nos defiende ante nuestro Juez celestial: "Mira, este precioso niño realmente quiere ser santo". A nosotros, el Espíritu nos dice: "Permíteme enseñarte a crecer en santidad y evitar este pecado". Y a otros, el Espíritu les dice: "Si me amas, ama a este buen amigo mío".

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The custom of genuflection is not found everywhere in the Catho-lic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you’re visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the “when in Rome” rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small portion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cup-board or eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a “metasis,” toward the altar—bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increas-ingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow to-ward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ’s presence in the church building. If you have ever participated in the liturgy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar’s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence! Generaciones de Fe / Apelación Católica Anual. Quería aprovechar esta oportunidad para aclarar las diferencias en estas campañas y responder a cualquier pregunta que pueda tener sobre estas apelaciones. Generaciones de Fe es una campaña especial - que parece venir en nuestra diócesis cada 20 años más o menos. Los objetivos de esta campaña son tres: 1. ayudar a las par-roquias en necesidad económica; 2. ayuda a los sacerdotes jubilados; 3. fomentar la pastoral juvenil en la diócesis. Generations of Faith / Annual Catholic Appeal. I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify the differences in these campaigns and answer any questions you might have about these appeals. Generations of Faith is a special campaign - one that seems to come along in our diocese every 20 years or so. the aims of this campaign are three-fold: 1. help parishes in financial need; 2. aid to retired priests; 3. foster youth ministry in the diocese. These are special needs that demanded attention and are being addressed in the "Generations" campaign. the time frame for this campaign is five (5) years. and so, we can fulfill our pledges to this campaign over the next three years as this GOF campaign began officially in January 2016. Total Pledged: $ 310,.40 From 145 Families Total Paid: $ 52,422 Total Delinquent: Without payments $21,017.52from 42 families. With payments $ 13,740 from 31 families. Total $ 34,757 From this amount, $20,000 were used for the A.C.A 2015. From this balance, $15,034 will be refunded to St. Gabriel, not enough to even to make the down payment of the pro-posed A/C system. The Annual Catholic Appeal is - as its title indicates - something that happens every year. this addresses the on-going needs of the diocese that require special support and funding every year; such as support for Catholic Charities, the Catholic Migration Office, Seminary Formation and our Catholic School and Academies. What we have to balance at this moment is our need to continue to support both campaigns at the same time. Only you know what you can afford, and so I ask you to be as generous as possible to both campaigns. if you were unable to contribute to the Generations of Faith Campaign last year - consider making a pledge to the ACA this year. As in past years, it is my hope that everyone in the parish will contribute something to these campaigns - even a small amount can go a long way if everyone in our parish decides to give something. PEOPLE OF HOPE Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the experience of the early church. We have tasted the ex-citement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today’s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. PUEBLO DE ESPERANZA Durante este tiempo de Pascua las lecturas nos han llevado por la experiencia de la Iglesia en sus primeros días. Hemos saboreado el entusiasmo y el celo de los primeros cristianos. Ahora, con ellos, escuchamos las palabras de san Pedro, que nos recuerda que cuando la gente note que somos pueblo de espe-ranza, debemos estar preparados para explicar por qué, lo cual nos presenta un reto. ¿Será que otros sí notan que somos pueblo de esperanza? En un mundo marcado por el cinismo y la deses-peranza, ¿nos destacamos por ser personas que ofrecen esperan-za y confianza a los otros? En el Evangelio de hoy Jesús prome-te que cuando deje esta tierra no nos dejará huérfanos. Hoy pro-mete enviar al Consolador, el Espíritu de la verdad que siempre permanecerá con nosotros.
