Shepherd’s Notes Ask the Priest

Major promotion of the Rosary for world peace on its way!

I’m working on different Rosary praying pledge levels for everyone in the parish to participate. The format is going to be easy to follow and fun. Most of the goal levels are easily attainable. The 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima is in 2017 and I would like to set a goal of 100,000 Rosaries prayed by our parishioners by October 13, 2017. We really need the help of Our Blessed Mother as we face a difficult world that has been waging war to get rid of faithful Christians loyal to the traditional teachings of Jesus Christ. Many of our families are also struggling with the daily challenges of life in general and praying the Rosary is just the right spiritual jolt they need to turn things around. Call or email me about helping out in this new Rosary Challenge. We need to meet very soon!

New priest coming our way In case you missed last weekend’s news, our bishop announced the new assignments for the priests in our diocese. On June 25th we will be saying fare-well to Father Tewes who served as parochial vicar here for nearly 5-1/2 years. We thank him for his years of service and we are planning to have a farewell party for him on the weekend of June 23-24. Check the bulletin and website for upcoming details. The new parochial vicar assigned to us is Father Mark Mullaney. He is coming from Saint Elizabeth of Hungary in Colonial Beach, VA. The only time I’ve personally conversed with Father Mullaney was during my 1st pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2008. We concelebrated Mass at the tomb where Jesus was buried and rose from the dead. That was quite a “prophetic” encounter! I’ll ask for his brief bio as soon as I hear from him.

Are you ready to face death?

Have you made the proper preparation in case you face a medical emer-gency or even death for you or your loved one? Or perhaps you’re not sure whether your current plan is up to par with our Catholic faith. Fear no more, Deacon Robert Gillispie, a practicing attorney and permanent deacon from Saint John the Apostle Catholic Church (Leesburg) will be giving a free presen-tation on the Catholic approved Advance Medical Directive. The presentation is on Wednesday, June 24 at 7:30 PM in the Catholic Education Center. Admission is free. Your shepherd in Christ,Father Escalante

Q. Why does Mary come to people in visions and how does she do that? –Kristen BlakeA. Mary appears to certain individuals to help the people of that generation get through with the difficult problems they are facing. In the Bible angels have appeared to people to warn them and to give them the right guidance from God. Our Blessed Mother appears to holy and humble people because she cares about us. She wants to make sure that we have at least the spiritual preparation to get through the troubling times. How the Blessed Virgin Mary does it is a mystery to us. She just appears and that’s why we call her visits an “apparition.” But we do know that the messages of Our Lady of Fatima (1917) to the three young children in Portugal are quite relevant to our present time. Her urgent messages include: “Wars are punishment for man’s sins;” another says, “Pray the Rosary for peace in the world;” and, “Many souls go to hell because of the sins of the flesh than for any other reason.” Keep reading the Sun-day bulletins as we are about to launch a major promotion of Our Lady of Fatima and the big Rosary Challenge! Q. If Adam had not eaten the forbidden fruit in the garden, would only women have original sin? –Dominic SmithA. That’s a very interesting question. We know that when Eve ate of the forbidden fruit, original sin did not enter the world. It was only after Adam ate of the fruit when original sin happened (Genesis 3:6-7). It was likely because God placed Adam to care for Eve. Had he not joined Eve in eat-ing the forbidden fruit, it appears that original sin may have been avoided. If Adam had rebuked Eve for disobeying God, we would have avoided all the troubles that we are dealing with now. Q. During Lent we’re not allowed to eat meat on Fri-days. Why do we have the fish fry?—Keira MacMillinA. We only give up eating “land” meat during the Fridays of Lent. Fish meat may be eaten. Land meat is usually more expensive to buy while fish meat costs less and eaten more commonly by poor people. Giving up land meat is a sacrifice for most people to do during Fridays of Lent. Q. If there are aliens out there, would they believe in God or have a Bible? –“Anonymous Me”A. Since God is the creator of the universe, the aliens would also believe in the same God that we worship. They would not likely have our Bible because ours was written with the setting here on Earth. These are all hypotheti-cal scenarios. Personally, I believe God made the whole universe just for the people here on earth who are his image and likeness. Jesus never made any mention about loving any living beings in other planets. I don’t believe that there are no life forms outside of our own and there is no Biblical evidence that says otherwise. [At the same time, it is not against our Catholic faith to believe that life can exist in other planets.]

If you are a woman who find yourself living a very busy life and in need of a spiritual rejuvenation, this new all-women Bible study is for you! • Jesus is getting “snubbed”! Eucharistic Adorers, where are you?—Are there more out there who love to visit Jesus? We have Eucharistic Adoration every Friday from 12:30pm to 5pm in the Oratory but very few stop by to see and honor Jesus in his real presence. We’re having a difficult time getting enough people to be present especially between 2-4pm. After July we’ll need a regular to cover from 4-5pm. Think of all the graces and blessings you’re missing!

• Compassionate Heart of Mary— Our newly formed Catholic bereavement group by Beverly Elero, Laura Burgess, Helen Mautner & Nora Hamilton will hold its inaugural meeting on June 13 @1:30pm in the old Parish Hall. • Altar Server Training: July 14-15—Rising 4th Grade boys and up (and attend Mass every Sunday) are invited to the upcoming Altar Servers’ Training. Call the parish office (540.338.6381) to register for the training. • Junior Altar Society Training: July 16—Rising 5th grade girls and up (and attend Mass every Sunday) are invited to join our elite liturgical team (currently 19 active members). The 1st training day is tentatively set from 2-4pm on July 16 (Thursday). Their ministry consists of preparing the church for Sunday Mass. These specially trained young women wear the distinctive blue, white and gold sash as a sign that they have received the proper training on the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist and qualified to arrange the sanctuary for the celebration of the Mass. They set up the sacred vessels and make sure that the Roman Missal and Lectionary are properly marked for the priest. They also reset the altar and the sanctuary after Mass. The JAS team work closely with the priest and the Mass coordinators. The JAS is proud of their important ministry and appreciate learning the intricate details of the Mass. Call the parish office (540.338.6381) to register for the training.

As always class assignments are on a first come, first served basis. Please do not wait to register. There is a financial benefit to signing up early. Call the RE office if you have any ques-tions. How many of us stopped our religious education at 8th grade, or perhaps in high school? How do we expect to engage a world that is hostel to Christian-ity with simply an 8th grade education? The major addition to the Religious Education program is the formation of a formalized adult Religious Education class for adult Confirmed Catholics. The class is for Catholics who want a refresher in their faith, graduates of RCIA and recent converts who want to deepen their faith, and devout Catholics who want to know how to defend their faith. Attendance at this class is by registration only and the class size is limited to 20. Sign up today and reserve your spot!

VBS VolunteersThank you for volunteering to help with VBS this year. We have been blessed with a huge response and we are fully staffed with youth volunteers. Any new youth volunteer will be placed on a wait list. We still have several openings for adult volunteers. Please call the RE office if you would like to help.

The Religious Education office is in need of Catechists for the 2015-2016 school year. Please consider volunteering your time to teach the children of the parish about Jesus Christ. Requirements for teaching are a passion and love for the Lord. We have openings in all sessions. To volunteer please contact James Blankenship at [email protected]. The Lord will reward you for your generosity!

Catechists Needed!

Dear RE Families, “Let the little children come to me” (Matthew 19:14). Christ’s words in the Gospel of Matthew serve as a reminder that even the smallest children need to experience God and have their faith nurtured. So I am excited to announce the formation of a new Pre-school Religious Education class for the 2015-2016 school year. The class is for preschool aged children ages 3-5 and will begin to introduce the truth of the Catholic Faith in an age appropriate manner. The class will be offered at different times and different days throughout the week and should be appealing to even the busiest family schedules. It is my hope that this class will very popular and lead to a bigger and more comprehensive preschool program. Please note that while the Preschool RE Registration Form is separate from the K-12th grade CCD Registration Form, the pricing is not. When figuring out the payment amount, please include your preschooler in the total number of kids in the program. You can download the new Preschool RE Registration Form from the St. Francis website or you can pick up a paper copy of the form from either the parish office or the RE office. Please contact the Religious Education office with any questions.Sincerely in Christ, James BlankenshipDirector of Religious Education

Bilingual Mass to Pray for Healing for Victims/Survivors of Sexual AbuseIn 2004, Bishop Loverde began a series of diocesan-sponsored Masses for the community to gather together to pray for healing for victims/survivors of sexual abuse. The masses are followed by a reception. The next Mass will be on June 16 at 7:30pm at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1427 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria. Bishop Loverde will preside.
