P A S T O R ’ S R e f l e c t i o n

B reaking Open the Word of God: Dear brothers and sisters, during this month of September our lives usually return back to normal. Our work, children are back in school, family life.

This creates a sense of starting a new period in our lives. Therefore, it is important not to fall into the routine and to do things only by repetition. In our Parish and community, we will also begin to plan and program the life of our parish, celebrations, formation programs, religious education, youth ministry, etc.

The Gospel passage this Sunday can help us build on solid foundation. Following Jesus entails the renunciation and detachment of anything that does not help us to do God's will in our daily lives. The passage begins by saying: " “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” Following Jesus implies making fundamental life choices, making a conscious choice, and giving up what is not necessary, what distracts our heart.

We need to place the Good News of the gospel at the center of our lives in reality and truth. Jesus gives us two examples: “Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’” And then another example: “Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.”

Many of our goals in our daily lives are full of vain promises and proposals, which are very difficult for us to realize in practical and everyday actions, thus they are nothing more than dreams. They lack the knowledge of reality, which is always changing, and too often we take them for granted. It is true that we are mostly the same person from year to year, but this does not mean that every year we are forced to repeat the same actions over and over. Outsiders often see us together, but not united; celebrating rites, but lacking joy; helping people, but not transformed into Jesus.

Consequently, before starting a new stage in this new school year, it is convenient for each of us to adopt an active, age-appropriate posture, towards our personal and family circumstances, Also towards the reality of our social and communal environment, so we can all take steps together in the direction we choose together. But all our pastoral programs must always lead to the Gospel that ends

today with these words: "In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple." Those at risk are those who do not like the situation they are living. Those who are comfortable, of course, do not want to change or embrace the cross that came in their path.

Jesus' proposal is clear: to follow him, you have to prefer Him over other things. The choice is not between loving God or loving humanity, but the proposal is to choose a full humanity instead of our faulty and fallen humanity. That full humanity is always found IN Jesus. When we do this, we are getting in touch with the very core of what it means to follow Jesus. This must be our life project, for this new stage that we begin this September. True discipleship is committing to a life of renunciation. It is embracing suffering, persecution, obedience, service and humility, all for love for Christ. When this has been accomplished, it can be said that the Christian has been saved by the wisdom of God, by the Holy Spirit who taught him and guided him step by step towards salvation and the gift of God's eternal Kingdom.

W alking together as brothers and sisters: Dear brothers and sisters, let us meditate this week about the following questions: When you’ve made important decisions in your life,

have you let other’s opinions sway your choice? Or have you truly asked yourself, what would Jesus do in this situation? Do you think you could have been happier if you had chosen to act like Jesus? May we, this week, invite Jesus’ way of thinking and acting into our every thought and action, that our lives may be changed into a radical and safe life following Christ.

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, 9/8/2019 | SETON Sunday News | 7

The priest said, “Good, and what after that?” Not sure exactly where he was going with this line of questioning, I replied, “I guess I will grow old, practicing medicine, eventually retire. And then I guess I will die and go to heaven.” The pastor nodded his head knowingly. Thoughtfully. And he was quiet for a few seconds. Then he looked at me earnestly and said, “And who will you bring with you into heaven?” Immediately, he rang the sacristy bell and we walked out to begin the Mass. I thought to myself, “How clever you are Monsignor. And he was quite clever.” I thought about that comment all during the Mass and many more times during my adolescent and young adult years. “And who will you bring with you into heaven?” It was asking myself that question repeatedly that really turned the tide and convinced me eventually that I should become a priest.

Every vocation is about helping other people reach heaven. I tell this story not to minimize the greatness of the sacrament of marriage, because marriage serves the same purpose! I suppose the young man might have used the same comment made by the pastor to move him towards the vocation of marriage. But the story illustrates the critical point that a vocation is not primarily about self-fulfillment, but about being the instrument of God in saving others.

From the Book

“To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett A. Brannen

“What will you do with your life? What are your plans? Have you ever thought of committing you Exitance totally to Christ? Do you

think that there can be anything greater than bringing Jesus to people and people to Jesus?”

In the Eucharist we find all the good of the Church. In it we have the certainty that God is faithful to His promise and stays with us until the end of time. In our visits and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, we experience the closeness of the good shepherd, the tenderness of His love, the presence of a

faithful friend. We all experience this large support in our lives provided by faith and our personal and intimate dialogue with the Lord in the Eucharist. Come Adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Monday through Friday from 10am to 9pm.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Just a reminder to all of our parishioners that we do still have a wonderful Prayer Shawl Ministry here at SEAS Parish. These shawls are made by your fellow parishioners ---beautifully knit or crocheted. They bring comfort and peace to those in need. One of our shawl makers wrote this note on the shawl she had just knitted, “May this shawl keep you warm and wrapped in God’s love”. I was told by another recipient, whose husband had just died, that she wrapped the shawl around her as she felt cold one morning and “It felt as if I was being held –being hugged”. If you know of someone who could use a warm hug or the comfort of knowing SEAS Parish cares about their loneliness, their loss, their suffering, let us know please. The Prayer Shawl Display has moved to the Fellowship Hall to keep the Narthex tidier, but we are still here for you. Coordinator: Joan Kluck [email protected]
