The Ascension of the Lord May 17, 2015

“Whoever believes and is baptized

will be saved.” -- Mark 16:16

St. Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two

From Father Burt Boudoin

THE ESSENTIAL TRUTHS REVEALED BY THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST

It is essential to understand the divine truths that are revealed by the glorious ascension of Our divine Lord – it is, in re-ality, His return to His true home: to the majesty and glory of Heaven, where He is enthroned at the right hand of the Father forever. Before His departure, Christ promised His Apostles and disciples that they might be with Him forever in Heaven. Before this could take place, they needed however to fulfill the responsibilities He entrusted to them: to form and shepherd the Church at its beginning.

1. On the day of Christ’s Ascension, they said farewell to their teacher and master of three years; certainly, their hearts were heavy with sadness as they said ‘good-bye’ to Him. Perhaps, they desired to go right then and there to Heaven, to be forever in His company! Yet, Christ gave them a mission to accomplish and participation in His authority to be successful: “All authority in heaven and on earth, he said, has been given to me; you, there-fore, must go out, making disciples of all nations, and baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all the commandments which I have given you.” (Matthew 18b-20)

2. Christ gave them the means to accomplish this work in the gift of the Holy Spirit as bestowed at Pentecost: “When the day of Pentecost came round, while they were all gathered together in unity of purpose, all at once a sound came from heaven like that of a strong wind blowing, and filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then appeared to them what seemed to be tongues of fire, which parted and came to rest on each of them; they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in strange languages, as the Spirit gave utterance to each.” (Acts 2: 1-4) The wind and fire manifest the power of God infused into the souls of the Apostles and the many languages spoken refer not to gibberish uttered in prayerful ecstasy but to the mission of the Church to bring salvation to all the peoples of the world.

3. Our dear Lord is the trailblazer who has gone to Heaven before us; He has opened the pathway to eternal life! In the beauty of Heaven, He is our great High Priest – the true and only bridge between our physical world and the spiritual Afterlife. Hence, we must beseech the Savior and Redeemer to keep us faithful to His teachings and those of the Church that we might share in the blessings of eternal happiness and peace: “…when God says to Him, ‘The Lord has sworn an irrevocable oath, Thou art a priest for ever’; all the more solemn, then, is that covenant for which Jesus has been given us as our surety. Of those other priests there was a succession, since death denied them permanence; whereas Jesus continues for ever, and His priestly office is unchanging; that is why He can give eternal salvation to those who through him make their way to God; He lives on still to make intercession on our behalf.” (Hebrews 7:21b-25)

Pastoral Letter of Marriage

May 10: Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan:

Reproductive Technology “The procreative capacity of man and woman should not be treated as just another means of technology, as also happens with in vitro fertilization (IVF) or cloning. When that hap-pens, human life itself is degraded because it becomes, more and more, something produced or manufactured in various ways, ways that will only multiply as science advances. Children begin to be seen less as gifts received in a personal communion of mutual self-giving, and increasingly as a life-style choice, a commodity to which all consumers are en-titled.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/loveandlife/.
