Merry Christmas!

As you read this you are probably making your last minute plans for your family Christmas cele-bration. In the midst of your preparations and celebration, please remember to take time to pray, to thank God for his blessings and for sending Jesus to save us.

Perhaps as a family you can gather around your manger scene and offer the following pray-er. This would be a great practice as a family since it would bring you together in prayer to focus on the great gift from God - coming to earth as the infant Jesus. Have a blessed Christmas!

Fr. Johnathan

Prayer while Gathered Around the Manger Scene

God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation, you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger, may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

The “Door of Faith” and Our “Doors”

Meditation

The “door of faith” (Acts 14:27) is always open for us. It ushers us into the life of communion with God and offers us entry into God’s Church. We can cross its thresh-old when God’s word is proclaimed, and when the heart allows itself to be shaped by God’s transforming grace (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 1).

This Year opens the door of faith by inviting us to renew our friendship with Christ and rediscover the Church’s teachings, and Advent opens the door of a new liturgical year. With these spiritual “doors” opening, consider what the physical doors in our lives look like: our parish church, our home or apartment, even my room. What do people see, outside, before the door opens? Do branches, flowers, a seasonal wreath—adorned perhaps with ribbons or fabric in appropriate (liturgical?) colors—offer a wordless welcome that heralds a warm personal greeting? Beside practical information, the church vestibule might also offer a seasonal visual meditation. In this Year of Faith, why not do the same thing at home for the rest of the year? Christmas decorations, outdoors and inside, are already customary. Why not plan something similar for Advent, Lent, Easter, even Ordinary Time? Situate the family crèche in an honored setting just inside the door so it can be the first thing that visitors see. Replace it during Lent with a treasured crucifix, then a Resurrection icon or Christ candle, an image of Our Lady during May, and so forth.

Mission

Adorn doors and entryways in every season throughout this Year of Faith with visual proclama-tions of faith that pledge the hospitality of those who open wide the doors. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
