We are celebrating today the Most Holy Trinity:
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy
Spirit. This Solemnity comes after our fifty-day
celebration of the glorious Resurrection of God the
Son, and right after we welcomed the coming of
God the Holy Spirit last Sunday at Pentecost. The
preface of today’s Mass tells us what we are
celebrating: “For with your Only Begotten Son and
the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord: not in
the unity of a single person, but in a Trinity of one
substance.”
Celebrating this great feast, we ponder what it
means for us that God is “Trinity.” The word itself is
not found in the Bible. However, in the Bible God reveals himself as a relational, loving
and compassionate God. This truth is eloquently proclaimed by God himself in today’s
reading from the Book of Exodus. He reveals himself to his people through his servant
Moses, proclaiming his name and his essential qualities: “The LORD, the LORD, a merciful
and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.”
Jesus speaks about the same merciful and gracious God in today’s Gospel: “God so loved
the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not
perish but might have eternal life.” The God who sent his Son is the One whom Jesus
refers to as the Father. The One whom the Father sent, “his only Son,” is Jesus, who
reveals that he is also God. Both the Father and the Son send the Holy Spirit who is also
God. Each of the three is God, but there is only one God, Three in One: the Holy Trinity!
To help articulate and put all these together, a theologian of the third century called
Tertullian used the Latin words tres unitas – three in unity – which eventually became
“Trinity” in English. But, three what? Tertullian employed the term persona – person in
English. He did not mean human person as we know today, because each human being
has a unique will. The three divine Persons, however, have one will; they are perfectly
united as one God. The standard description of who they are is “three Persons”; while the
description of what they are is “one God.”
Do I experience God as merciful and gracious, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity?
Have I accepted the gift of communion of love with God through the Death of his Son Jesus?
Have I experienced God as a relational God or as a cold, solitary remote deity?
Mary, perfect creation of the Trinity, help me to make my whole life a
homage to God, who is love.

ST ANTHONY’S SCHOOL Drawing upon St John Paul II’s words, Pope Francis reminds us that the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is precious, with much to offer the Catholic Church around the world. "Your culture, which shows the lasting genius and dignity of your race, must not be allowed to disappear. Do not think that your gifts are worth so little that you should no longer bother to maintain them. Share them with each other and teach them to your children. Your songs, your stories, your paintings, your dances, your languages, must never be lost." This week as a school we have commemorated Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week as a
part of our call to live out our faith by being people of prayer, reconciliation, and peace. Students have this week learnt about our First Nations Peoples and the stories of our recent history. One highlight which was celebrated through the recent Catholic Education News was about the Year 3 class ‘Stepping it up for Reconciliation’ by walking the 1.14km length of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or about 1600 steps,
in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Corroboree 2000 Bridge Walk, where more than 250,000 people marched together in support of reconciliation.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” When Elijah heard the still small voice, he “went out and stood at the entrance of the cave” and waited. Hear God speak in Psalm 46:10, and now take time to sit in silence before the Lord. Can you make it 5 minutes? Just as finding silence for prayer takes practice, prayerfully reading Scripture is a habit that also takes time and effort to establish. A habit of praying with Scripture gives God the opportunity to talk to us and allows us to learn how to listen. This is the secret of the saints: immerse yourself in God’s Word knowing it is addressed to you, and you will hear God speak to you. “Let them remember, however, that prayer should accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that a dialogue takes place between God and man. For ‘we speak to him when we pray; we listen to him when we read the divine oracles.’” —CCC 2653 (Quoting St. Ambrose) Consider your current habits for reading Scripture. Do you read the Bible on a regular basis? Is it for prayer or for study? What are some steps you can take this week to begin praying with Scripture or to increase the time you spend praying with Scripture?
