Happy New Year to you all! Father Large and I are thankful for the messages and notes we have received during our quarantine. I am thankful that Father Large has tested negative and returned to celebrating Mass here at Saint Anselm. I can honestly say quarantining for two weeks is one of the most frustrating things I have dealt with as a priest and as your pastor. Being able to celebrate weekend Masses, funerals and weddings is what enlivens my ministry here at the parish. I am grateful for the many parish priests from neighboring parishes who came in to celebrate our Masses, especially my close priest friends Father Steve Paolino and Father John Weber. I am grateful for the friendship and fraternity of the priests who have sustained my almost 12 years of priesthood in Philadelphia. As I conclude my quarantine, I express gratitude that we were able, even in my separated-ness, to provide all of you the sacraments in church. Thank you for your understanding and patience. As we celebrate this weekend the Baptism of the Lord, and the official end of the season of Christmas, we reflect on how the Sacrament of Baptism has changed each of our lives. We were changed in an eternal manner when our parents or grandparents chose for us to be united to God through the pouring of the water and the ritual led by our childhood parish priest or deacon. In our Gospel this Sunday we hear how our Lord chose His cousin John to baptize Him in the waters of the Jordan River. John has repeated before this that he is unworthy to even “untie the sandals of the feet” of the Messiah. But Jesus recognizes the need to witness to John’s followers that He is the one to fulfill the prophecies of old and also bring Redemption into the brokenness of sin and suffering. And so, after baptizing Jesus, we hear the voice of the Father from heaven speak: “This is my Son, my Beloved, in whom I am well pleased.” But what does this mean for each one of us as disciples of Jesus? It means that our union with Jesus is a union with the Triune God. It means that Jesus is not just some historical figure, a man who lived 2000+ years ago. He truly is the Son of God. He has a human nature given to him through Mary, and a divine nature eternally at one with the Father and the Holy Spirit. The One who is our brother is also the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. We don’t just give him the title God. Adored by the shepherds and wise men, they recognized what we struggle to see with our spiritual “eyes”: that Jesus is God made man, dwelling among us. When we call upon Jesus to help us in our human weakness, we are praying to God. When we participate in Mass and receive the Holy Eucharist, we receive the God who also dwells within us from our baptisms. When we seek forgiveness in the confessional, we are forgiven not by the human priest but through the working of grace in the Sacrament passed down from Christ called Holy Orders. Those of you who were married in Church, Jesus united His Love to your love for one another in a sacramental covenant united by His grace. This weekend we celebrate the grace given to us in all our sacraments, and give thanks to the Lord above for all that He continues to do for each one of us as children of the Heavenly Father. Let us pray, brothers and sisters, for the grace this week to follow more closely the only Begotten Son of God, and to permit God to refashion our broken hearts and renew within us the promises made at our individual baptisms. Let us rejoice that God has saved us! + Father Rossi

Vincentian Message…
After Jesus was baptized, He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent DePaul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them reason to believe and to trust.
