    A LETTER FROM FR. JOE

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In our Sunday gospel this week, Jesus asks His disciples two questions. “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” was His first question. And all of His disciples answered and all described various people’s reactions: Jeremiah, Elijah, a prophet…. They were able to answer, without actually committing themselves to anything! But Jesus then comes in for the kill with His second question: “Who do you say that I am?” And this time, only one of the disciples was able to respond. And Peter gives a stunning answer: You are “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” that is, the long-awaited Savior, the Messiah. How could Peter have understood this profound truth so early in the game? All we know is that in response to Peter’s profession, Jesus responds: “Blessed are you Simon son of Jonah, no human has revealed this to you, but My heavenly Father.” It’s the same question Jesus poses to you and to me here and now today. Who is Jesus concretely to you and to me? What is your answer? On another note, a word of thanks and congratulations to David Russo! David has graduated from College and will move permanently to Boston in the next few weeks. Over the last several years, David has been so generous in his frequent service to Saint Andrew’s as our musician at Mass (until the pandemic hit). It’s a treat that he will be playing and singing at our Masses this weekend, so please join me in thanking him for all the music! And join me in wishing David every blessing and Godspeed as he begins the next part of his journey in Boston!

    God bless you!

    Fr. Joe

  • Pope Francis’ Prayer to the Virgin Mary

    for Protection and Hope

O, Mary You always shine on our path

as a sign of salvation and of hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,

who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain,

    keeping your faith firm.

    You, Salvation of the People,

    know what we need,

and we are sure you will provide

so that, as in Cana of Galilee,

we may return to joy and to feasting

    after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love,

to conform to the will of the Father

and to do as we are told by Jesus,

who has taken upon himself our sufferings

    and carried our sorrows

to lead us, through the cross,

to the joy of the resurrection.

    Amen.

    Under your protection,

we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of who we are in trial,

but deliver us from every danger,

    O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS SUNDAY, AUGUST 30 1ST READING: Jer 20:7-9

    2ND READING: Rom 12:1-2

    GOSPEL: Mt 16:21-27

    TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN

    ORDINARY TIME

    First Reading: Isaiah 22:19-23

This passage refers to the use of authority and

indicates the Key as the symbol of authority.

The words “open” and “shut” refer to the power

that will eventually be given to Peter.

    Second Reading: Romans 11:33-36

Paul writes ecstatic and praise-filled words

about God’s plan for his people. In him, he

    writes, “all things are.”

    Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20

When Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say that

I am?” Peter exclaims, “You are the Messiah!”

Christ then declares that Peter is the “Rock” upon

which he will build his Church, promising him the

power “to bind” and “to loose.”

    Prayer for Spiritual Communion

    My Jesus, I believe

    You

    are in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love you above all things,

and I long for You in my soul.

Since I can not now receive You,

    sacramentally,

come at least spiritually in my heart.

As though You have already come.

I embrace You and unite myself entirely to

    You;

Never permit me to be separated from You.

    Readings for the Week

  • In today’s Gospel reading Jesus asked His disciples who

people thought He was. Everybody seemed to think He

was someone special, but none of them knew who He

really was. When Jesus asked the disciples themselves

who they thought He was, Simon said that He was “the

Christ, the Son of the living God!” Simon only knew this

because God had put it into his mind. When Simon said

this, Jesus said that his name would now be Peter, which

means rock, and that on this rock He would build His

Church. He made Simon Peter the first pope.

    I saw God…

During the Liturgy of the Word, the

    Gospel reading is always from…

    A) The Old Testament B) The New Testament

    Last week’s answer:

During the Liturgy of the Word, the

first reading is always from the Old

    Testament.

    Sunday’s Readings

    1st Reading: Is 22:19-23

    2nd Reading: Rom 11:33-36

    Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20

Adult Question: If Jesus turned and asked you the same question, who would you say He is? How would you describe Jesus to someone who did not know Him? Child’s Question: What are three things you know about Jesus?

We are told to look for God

    in many places- in the

    scriptures, in our daily

    prayers, in our weekly

    worship- but God is

    everywhere. His presence

    surrounds us. Take the

time this week to be more

    aware of this. Email a

    photo or a description to

    St. Andrew’s at

    [email protected]

and we will post all the

    places our parishioners see

    God.
