SUNDAY REFLECTION

DISCIPLINE It is no accident that the words “disciple” and

“discipline” are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as “disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet.

FAREWELL AND WELCOME

Our parish has been quite busy this summer, with many people coming and going. This weekend we say goodbye to Sr. Leticia Li. Sr. Leticia has been with us for almost two months, joining Sr. Dilecta to help out and teach Chinese in our Summer Camp. We thank Sr. Leticia for her generous assistance and hope to see her again soon.

Next weekend we will welcome back Seminarian Hung Cao. The bishop must have been so pleased with our hospitality that he is sending Hung back to be with us for another year. Hung will join our parish staff in learning how to “run” a parish. Please support him with your prayer and cooperation.

ST. AGATHA SCHOOL REGISTRATION St. Agatha School is accepting registration for the

2016-2017 school year. It is important that you bring the following items when you register your child: Birth Certificate, Baptismal Certificate, Immunization record, report card for grades 1-8. FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM

REGISTRATIONS Registration for the Catechetical year 2016-2017 has

begun! Registration for Sunday catechism is every Monday during the month of August from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the rectory. First time students MUST bring baptismal certificate and if applicable, First Holy Communion certificate; fee is $75.00 per student. Money order or check only at time of registration. Continuing students MUST re-register for the new catechetical year. After Monday, August 29 there will be a late registration fee of $25.00 per child. The process of joining the Roman Catholic Church is known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Each year, adults seeking to join the Roman Catholic Church or complete their sacraments receive weekly support, encouragement and assistance from the RCIA program. REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL

DISCIPLINA No es accidente que las palabras “discípulo” y “disciplina” sean casi idénticas. Su relación en la fe y la vida cristianas, sin embargo, ha caído en desuso en la generación pasada debido a que ciertas reglas y regulaciones prescritas en la fe cristiana se han reducido o relajado. Estas reglas con frecuencia eran llamadas “disciplinas”. Nos equivocamos, sin embargo, si pensamos que ya no se necesita disciplina para seguir a Cristo. La Carta a los Hebreos nos lo asegura hoy. Nuestra disciplina es como la de un atleta que persigue una victoria o quiere ser el mejor, o como la de un músico que lucha por hacer carrera como concertista o por perfección en la ejecución de una nueva obra musical. Esta disciplina se basa en el deseo, no en las reglas. Fue el deseo de hacer la voluntad de Dios lo que motivó a Jesús en el camino hacia el calvario. Es ese mismo deseo el que él inspira en nosotros hoy: luchar por entrar por la puerta angosta, para encontrarnos en el Reino con muchas personas que están allí no solamente por observar las reglas, sino por un sincero deseo de reclinarse a la mesa del celestial banquete. DESPEDIDA Y BIENVENIDA Nuestra parroquia ha estado muy ocupado este verano, con mucha gente yendo y viniendo. Este fin de semana nos despedimos de Sor Leticia Li. Sor Leticia ha estado con nosotros durante casi dos meses, uniéndose a Sor Dilecta para ayudar y enseñar chino en nuestro campamento de verano. Agradecemos a Sor Leticia por su ayuda generosa y esperamos volver a verla pronto. La próxima semana vamos darle la bienvenida de nuevo al Seminarista Hung Cao. El obispo debe haber estado tan satisfecho con nuestra hospitalidad que está enviando Hung de regreso con nosotros por un año más. 诫命

“门徒”和“诫命”这两个词几乎是不可区分

的，而这并不是一种巧合；可是这两个词与基督

徒的信仰和生活的关系，却在上一代因着教会一

些诫命和规矩的降低和松懈而失落了。这些规矩

通常称为“诫命”。我们现在错误的认为，跟随基

督不再需要遵守诫命了。今天写给希伯来人的书

信中向我们宣告，诫命为我们就像一位在赛场上

为了胜利而奋斗的运动员，或者一位在音乐或创

作事业上努力的音乐家。诫命是从渴望来的，而不

是从规章制度。诫命是我们渴望顺从天主的旨意，

这渴望使耶稣走上了十字架的路，今天他也同样

鼓励我们有这份渴望：努力从窄门进入，然后我

们会在天主的国里，看到令人惊讶的形形色色的

人，他们不是因着单单遵守了诫命，而是因着真实

再见与欢迎

这个夏天我们堂区因着一些人的来往而有些

忙碌，我们在这个周末向李修女说再见。李修女大

约两个月的时间，来帮忙我们学校的夏令营活动

并教授中文课。我们感谢她的大方帮忙并期待下

次再见。

下个周末我们会再次见到高春生修士，因为

主教看到我们对高修士的热情招待，所以现在派

他回来，在我们堂区服务一年。高修士将学习如何

让一个堂区运行，让我们用祈祷与合作来支持他。

中文儿童主日学

九月份开始，杨修女计划在星期六上午十点

钟到十一点半开办四岁到六岁的儿童要理班，星

期天一点钟则是七岁到十四岁的主日学，为领受

圣事做准备。请在弥撒结束后到教堂门口向江秀

燕登记。为了安排课程，报名截止日期为八月底，

炼狱:净化我灵
