With all the hype sur-rounding golf equip-ment technology it

Whether you are in search ofgolf ’s holy grail or resignedyourself to the fact that golf isnot a game of “perfect”, I amsure that within the pages of thisedition you will come across aproduct or service that will ei-ther help your game or justmake your golfing experiencethat much more enjoyable.

Planning is Imperative for a successful event: Hosting a tournament is an absolute privilege for any golf course superintendent. It is a fantastic op-portunity to strive for perfection & produce the highest quality playing surface for some of the bestplayers in the world.

6 Months Prior to the Event: 1. Draw up your tournament schedule – this will allow you to work out the projected overtime for

the tournament week, how many meals you will require, volunteer staff & additional equipment. If you know this in advance you can budget accordingly & give people sufficient warning.

Part 1 of 3 in our new series on how the golf course superintendents get the

courses ready for tournament play. Brought to you by Sue de Zwart who was

golf course superintendent at Leopard Creek Country Club from 1997 to

2005. Sue has worked at four U.S. Masters and two U.S. Opens.

US Open preparation begins 5 years prior to the event. I was fortunate enough

to be part of the team preparing for the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach.

We redid every single bunker on the course as well as numerous other projects.

The Pebble Beach Company was a fantastic group to work for & their motto is

“Whatever it Takes” which is a fantastic grounding.

3. Bunkers – work through all your bunkers ensuring your edging is as close to the original design aspossible, sand levels are 100 – 150 mm throughout the base of the bunker. Once you have workedthrough all the bunkers you should look at the bunkers hole by hole & ensure that the colour is uni-form for TV coverage. If you need to cap the bunkers this should be done by 3 months prior to theevent.

4. Mowing patterns – these should be adjusted by 3 months prior to the event at the latest. Remembermost TV cameras will point green to tee so you need to look at each hole from green to tee when set-ting up the mowing patterns. It is good to involve your golf director to assist you with the landingareas for the pros to ensure you are narrowing the fairways in the correct areas. Email photos of anyareas of concern to the tournament director. Walkways should be mowed prior to letting the roughgrow up. The easiest way to mark these is to mow them yourself the first time.

5. Set your goals on your cutting heights: An intermediate cut is typically 25 mm high & this is oftenused to mow one line around the fairways & often around bunkers to include them in the short cut, remember to use this cut to your advantage to highlight the fairway. The rough cut could be anywherebetween 50 & 100 mm depending on your climate, grass type, irrigation & whether you are using plantgrowth regulators like Primo Maxx or not. It is good to grow the rough up slowly at least a month prior to the event to ensure good coverage. Remember this dense canopy will be exceptionally humid so watch for disease particularly in summer. This is the one time I would suggest a preventativefungicide in the rough. One can also boost the rough with biological control in the months leading up to an event.

Talk about perfection – Augusta National. It is the one golf course where

you expect so much, but it is just that much more impressive.

Augusta have tournament preparation down to a fine art.

Sport & Protectionfrom the SunIn our last edition we looked at sunscreen, here we look at protecting your

eyes from the harsh rays of the sun.

Skin cancer often occurs on the eyelid or adja-cent area of the eye. It occurs most often onthe lower eyelid, but may be found anywhere

on the eyelid margins, corners of the eye, eyebrowskin or adjacent areas of the face. Ultraviolet Raysare rays that reach the earth from the sun that aretoo high in frequency for the human eye to see. Theonly way to protect your eyes is to stay in the shadeor by using sunglasses with good quality lenses:UV400 or higher.

Technical information:

The reason Ultraviolet rays are not visible is that thehuman eye can only see between 400 Nanometersand around 800 Nanometers.

Nanometers (Nm) are the unit of measurement forlight rays. The different rays are interpreted by oureyes as different colours. Blue, for example is a highfrequency light wave (400-450Nm) and Red is avery low frequency light wave (around 750Nm).

Once again we are dealing with the different typesof UV rays:

• UVC - Between 0 - 250 Nm - these rays are veryharmful, but fortunately it is almost entirelyblocked out by the earths atmosphere.

• UVB - between 250-360 Nm - This is the one toworry about the most! They are the most harmfulrays and are responsible for most damage doneto human eyes.

These ultraviolet rays pass right through theearth's atmosphere and bore directly into thedeep internal workings of the human eye.

• UVA - between 260 - 400 Nm - less harmfulthan UVB, but also needs to be considered foreye protection. These rays can only be blockedout by lenses that block out all light to 400Nanometers (called UV 400 lenses).

Warnings

During the summer months it would not only be ad-visable to wear UV 400 sunglasses, but also to takenote of the size and shape of the lenses in your sun-glasses. The lens must not be too small as you willneed as much protection as possible, therefore, obtainsunglasses that have lenses that cover the entire eyearea and if possible sunglasses that wrap around onthe sides. These wrap-sunglasses are definitely advis-able for skiing and boating where UV reflects off thesurface of the snow and water and penetrates the eyefrom the side area. Remember, that all UV radiationthat reaches the earth's surface can reflect from glass, grass, snow, cement, water, etc. and therefore can alsocause damage to the eyes, even though you are notpositioned in direct sunlight.

Eyes and UV radiation

Just as the skin can get sunburnt by overexposureto UV radiation, so can the eye. The most delicate

areas are the cornea and the retina - the sensitiveseeing part of the eye. The symptom in this instanceis red, swollen and sore eyes. This irritation can alsocause a swelling of the conjunctiva. Sunburn of theeyes can lead to conjunctivitis or lesions of theretina, resulting sometimes in temporary or perma-nent vision deterioration. Generally sore eyes im-prove in 48 hours as the burnt surface of the eyeregenerates. Do not look directly into the sun. Thiscan result in damage to the accurately discriminat-ing part of the eye, and accurate vision can be lost.

Cataracts are attributed to overexposure to UV ra-diation. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindnessin the world. Proteins in the eye's lens unravel, tan-gle and accumulate pigments that cloud the lensand eventually lead to blindness. Even thoughcataracts appear to different degrees in most indi-viduals as they age, sun exposure, in particular ex-posure to UVB, appears to be a major risk forcataract development.

Eyelids

Skin cancer often occurs on the eyelid or adjacentarea of the eye. It occurs most often on the lowereyelid, but may be found anywhere on the eyelidmargins, corners of the eye, eyebrow skin or adja-cent areas of the face. Usually it appears as painlesselevations or nodules. The eyelashes may be dis-torted or missing. There may be ulcerations of theinvolved area, along with bleeding, crusting, and/ordistortion of the normal skin structure. Such oc-currences need to be evaluated and may require abiopsy to confirm the diagnosis of skin cancer.

• Remember, that not all variations of growths onthe skin is skin cancer.

• But, a medical practitioner/doctor/dermatologistshould be consulted to evaluate the growth orsuspicious area.

• Early detection can save lives, therefore it is ad-visable to get professional advise in the earlystages of any change on the skin, eyes or body.

Treatment

• A biopsy of the area is essential to ascertain thecondition of the growth. Thereafter the doctorwill recommend what needs to be done and/orrefer you to the specialist in this field. A plastic-or reconstructive surgeon, who specializes in dis-eases and conditions affecting the eyelids, treatsmost eyelid-related cancers.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

W I N N I N G L E T T E RDear Ed,

It is with a slight disillusionment toward the“Beautiful Game” that I write this letter.

Since the demise of former number 1 golfer TigerWoods the game has become quite boring.

I feel that the treatment this man has received, notonly from his fans, but also from his opponentshas been pretty lame.

Pro-golfers and fans quickly forget that he singlehandily elevated the level of pro-golf from a sportof semi-fit and laid-back golfers to a sport wheremostly golfing athletes will excel, and has forced achange where if you want to win at the highest

level you have to drop your 500gr burger and optfor a good workout at the local gym.

As much as I have loved to hate this sporting icon,I have grown to love him. He has put the game ofgolf at its highest level, not forgetting that playersand tournaments are now getting huge sponsor-ship and prize money thanks to him.

I think he should now chill out go find some babesor get a girlie magazine and get back to his win-ning ways.

Thanks Tiger

Nuno

Dear Nuno

I have always known the term “the beautiful game” as a synonym for soccer. I suppose that you could callgolf the beautiful game however most people I know use terms such as frustrating and difficult. It is forthese reasons that I would rather say “the rewarding game” for when you do get it right it is hugely reward-ing.

Yes Tiger has done a lot for golf and has at times been harshly treated but to say that he single handilytransformed the game and that the game has become boring since his woes began would be untrue.

Gary Player pioneered the idea that golfers should be fit; his training regimes were and still to thisday remain legendary and young stars such as Ryo Ishikawa, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, Mat-

teo Manassero and Martin Kaymer offer flair and excitement seldom seen in any sporting code.

It will be great to see Tiger return but the game is always bigger than the individual andthat is what makes it beautiful.

Enjoy your prize and thanks for the letter.

Lee Westwood has joined an elite group of golfers by being awarded honorary life membership of

the European Tour.

Westwood and Sir

"He has shown unswerving loyalty

to the European Tour for the best

part of 20 years and is fully deserv-

"For the past 4 months Lee has sat

on top of the world in a golfing

sense, and the fact that only 12

other players have claimed the

position of number one over a

25-year period speaks volumes for

the enormity of his achievement.

"He has done this through the

quality of his golf and sheer force

of personality - and is undoubtedly

one of our greatest champions."

He is third in the circuit's all-time

career money list behind Ernie

MOSSEL BAY – HOME OF CHAMPIONS

How can it be that 2010 British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen, 2010

European Ladies Tour winner Lee-Anne Pace and winner on the Senior

European Tour Bertus Smit all call Mossel Bay Golf Club home?

Well after spending some time visiting the area and chatting to the locals it seems that the answer is simple. The area with its moderate climate (rated 2nd best in the world) and fascinating history (Bartolomeu Dias and his crew were the first Europeans to land on South

African soil and as local archaeological deposits have revealed Mossel Bay’s human history can be tracedback more than 164,000 years) is the ideal place to not only play golf but to live and enjoy life in general. This is a genuine, home grown, South African Coastal town. There is a “No Hurries, No Worries” frameof mind that is present, however the standard of the golf courses, restaurants, accommodation and servicein general is excellent.

In my opinion they have got the balance righthere and after chatting to Lee-Anne this seems tobe further reinforced as she comes across as determined and professional yet down to earth,a young lady who is just as happy fishing or learn-ing to surf as playing against the best womangolfers in the world.

Ideally situated half an hour from George andninety minutes from Knysna there is no shortageof superb golf courses in the area. It is only a mat-ter of time before more champions startemerging from Mossel Bay(see page 22).

You could be forgiven for asking what they feed‘em in Mossel Bay. Not content with giving us

2010 British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen,2010 European champion Lee-Anne Pace, and2009 Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open winnerBertus Smit, Mossel Bay Golf Club this week an-nounced the arrival of two very young champions:9-year old Martin Vorster, and 8-year old JordanDuminy. “They played the SA Kids Golf USQualifier at Bronkhorstspruit on the 22nd and23rd of January, and Martin won the 9-year old’sdivision by 11 shots, while Jordan came second inthe 8-year olds,” said Mossel Bay Golf Club CEO,Bertu Nel. Both boys will now represent SouthAfrica and the Mossel Bay Golf Club in the Euro-pean Kids Championship in Scotland in June, andin the World Champs in the USA in August. Mr.Nel said that the boys posted exceptional perform-ances. “Martin played 18 holes on the Saturdayand 18 on the Sunday, and carded 75 and 77,while Jordan, whose division only plays 9 holes, scored 38 and 40.”

The boys play regularly in the Mossel Bay GolfClub’s development programme, and receive train-ing from Craig Lewthwaite, who teaches at theClub’s Junior Academy. “They haven’t qualified forthe Louis Oosthuizen Junior Academy yet, but ba-sically they receive the same coaching.” Mr. Nelsaid that the club will now help the boys’ familiesraise the funds they’ll need for their trips. “I’d ap-preciate any help or sponsorship we can get,” saidMartin’s father, Waldo Vorster.

“I believe that this achievement will motivate Mar-tin to play and practice golf even more. He has anincredible love and talent for golf and I believe thatplaying in Scotland and America will give him ahuge boost.”Jordan’s father, Hilton Duminy, said,“I would like to take this opportunity to thankMossel Bay Golf Club for their leniency and kind-ness towards junior golfers and thanks for goingthe extra mile allowing them to participate in mostof the club events. “It will be highly appreciated ifMossel Bay Golf Club could assist to make thisdream for these kids to participate in these inter-national events a reality.” Mr. Nel said that theLouis Oosthuizen Junior Golfing Academy has al-ready pledged R 5,000 each towards the boy’strips.

“We’re appealing to members, and local businessesto come forward and help,” he said.

Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm said that theProud Mossel Bay campaign saluted MartinVorster and Jordan Duminy.

“Proud Mossel Bay exists to honour any local cit-izen who’s excelled in his or her chosen field - butwe never thought we’d be honouring boys of sucha young age. “Proud Mossel Bay is really proud ofMartin and Jordan.”

Stay in Mossel Bay when you play the Garden Route

There’s a very good reason why MosselBay Tourism uses the slogan ‘MosselBay. Do stuff ’ - and it’s this: the townoffers an unequalled number of thingsto do...Which might surprise first-timevisitors.

“Look beyond the holiday houses and there’s muchmore to the town than you might have thought,”said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm, who be-lieves that Mossel Bay is the ideal base from whichto explore the Garden Route and Klein Karoo.

She said that it’s possible to play at least ten superbcourses whilst staying in Mossel Bay.

“We’re half an hour from George, and 90 minutesfrom Knysna - so you can choose from our localcourses (Mossel Bay and Pinnacle Point), or Fan-court (which has 3 courses), George, Kingswood,Oubaai, Knysna, Pezula, or Simola.

“And, if you’ll excuse the pun, getting there’s abeautiful drive - no matter where you go in theGarden Route.”

Off the course, she said, Mossel Bay’s numerousattractions and activities are gathering ever moreattention. “One travel magazine recently ran acover article which called us ‘The Adventure Cap-ital of the Garden Route.’

“Adrenalin activities like shark cage diving and skydiving, mountain biking, horse riding, kayaking,4x4 routes, sand boarding, angling, sailing, andsurfing have really taken off in Mossel Bay in thelast few years, but there’s plenty to do for everyone- and this should make it even more attractive forgolfers, because it makes it a pleasure to bring non-playing members of the family on your golfingbreak-aways,” said Ms. Holm.

Mossel Bay is uniquely positioned relative to theOuteniqua Mountains and the ocean currents thatpass the southern coast of South Africa - which hasresulted in a mild, dryish climate, with more than320 days of sunshine per annum.

“Naturally, with the sea, the beaches, and themountains on our doorsteps, this means that manyof the attractions in Mossel Bay are focused on theoutdoors - but, perhaps more importantly forgolfers, it means that you can expect good playingconditions throughout the year.

“Add all of this to the fact that Mossel Bay’s theone place on the coast where there’s waterfront ac-commodation for everyone - no matter what yourbudget may be - and it becomes more and moreattractive as a golfing destination,” said Ms. Holm.

No trip to Mossel Bay would be complete without samplingsome wonderful wild oysters. After a round at Mossel BayGolf Club my advice would be to head down to the har-

bour to the Sea Gypsey restaurant where you can enjoy a plate ofoysters whilst gazing across the bay. Wild oysters are excellentsources of several minerals, including iron, zinc and selenium, which are often low in the modern diet. They are also anexcellent source of Vitamin B12. Hein Eksteen who dives for wildoysters in Mossel Bay gave us this interesting information: The wildoyster’s biological name is (striostrea margaritacea). These oystersare different in taste because they grow where nature has plantedthem.

After working with these animals for more than 20 years I knowthat it is their habitat which plays a role in triggering the taste budsof the connoisseur. The habitat starts on the shore till sea depths ofabout 20 meters. The oysters decide whether they are male or femaleand then they sporn. The microscopic spat then travels along thecoast, where not to long thereafter it finds a crevice, cave, gully, pot-hole or rock formation where it attaches itself. They grow into a sizeof about 120 grams in less than 2 years but we frequently harvestsome of them over 1kg. The biggest ever harvested was 2.318 kg,in Vlees Bay. An oyster over 1kg takes about 8 years to grow.

The oyster gets protected by nature from overharvesting by means of sandcovering the reefs where they grow layers of up to 12 meters and then theystill grow under that sand. Redbait also grows on the reefs and the oyster grows

beneath it. When the cycle is finished the redbaitdisintegrates and “wallah” there they sit againready to be picked. The habitat creates the tasteof the oyster because it feeds on microscopicplankton. This makes the oyster 100% organic.Sea temperatures (in Mossel Bay it’s about in 14degrees in winter and 22 degrees in summer) ef-fects the taste of the oyster. Rough seas is also a bigfactor, then we can’t get in to harvest. We as pick-ers are also restricted by government and can onlyenter with wet gear and boots. No hookah or com-pressed air is allowed. After the oyster has beenharvested the company keeps them in tubs withseawater that gets pumped from the ocean. Thiswater runs through the oyster until it gets ordered.

They then get packed in poly boxes with their lidsfacing upwards. They can easily live another 7 daysin the box without seawater but then they mustnot be exposed to sunlight or wind.

Mossel Bay’s wild oysters are best enjoyed with oneor two drops of Tabasco, fresh lemon, course seasalt and ground pepper. Sauvignon Blanc can alsobe served, well chilled.

“Between her and Louis Oosthuizen, we owe thema huge debt of gratitude.

“I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many articles and broadcasts have mentioned Mossel Bayover the last year because they’ve featured Louisand Lee-Anne.”

Ms. Pace’s five tournament victories in the fivemonths from June to October 2010 set her oncourse for her title – but her entire career has beenno less remarkable.

“She began by caddying for her dad (Francois) andplaying with some of the boys at Wellington, where we used to live,” said her mother, Sandra.

“But within about three or four months one of thelocal coaches noticed her, and in another threemonths she was playing for Boland.

“That was in her matric year, and in the followingyear she gained her junior and then her Springbokcolours.”

The Pace family moved to Mossel Bay in 2001, although Lee-Anne was then working – and play-ing golf – in Durban.

“She decided on her own to apply for an athleticscholarship to the University of Murray State, inKentucky, and she started studying in 2003,” saidMs. Pace, Sr.

Proud Mossel Bay SalutesLouis Oosthuizen and Lee-Anne Pace“I don’t think many people realise how much Lee-Anne – who achieved her position after winning

the Ladies European Tour’s Henderson Money List (the old Order of Merit) in Dubai last year –

has done for Mossel Bay and the Mossel Bay Golf Club,” said the Club’s CEO, Bertu Nel.

There she won seven intercollegiate events and the University’s Player of the Year award beforetransferring to the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma,on a full athletic scholarship in 2004.

She graduated with a BA in Science (with a majorin psychology and a minor in coaching), and wonthe Western Athletic Conference’s Player of theYear award in 2005.

Lee-Anne Pace has represented South Africa at theWorld Amateur Championship in Puerto Rico, atthe Commonwealth Games in New Zealand, at the World Amateur Championship in Malaysia,at the Belgian International Championship, andat the British, Wales and Ireland Games.

She was named Player of the Year by both Com-plete Golfer and Golf Digest in 2009.

“Everyone asks where she gets her perseverancefrom,” said her mother. “I think it’s from that lastyear of her studies when she was also playing onthe Futures Tour.

“She very often had to sit with her books on theplane and work while she was travelling.”

Mr. Nel said that the Mossel Bay Golf Club hadseen a definite increase in demand in the periodsince Ms. Pace’s European Tour win.

“Our figures are up on last year, and in this economy, that says everything,” he said.

He noted that while most of the additional demand came from South Africans, the course hadhosted a significant increase in foreign players overthe last week: “And they all ask about Lee-Anneand Louis. They all want to see their photos on thewall.

“Some Swedish players were even lucky enough torecognise Louis on the first tee during a practiceround earlier this year, and to have their picturestaken with him.”

Mr. Nel said that the club would be publishingpersonalised Lee-Anne Pace and Louis Oosthuizenscore cards later this year, “And we think they’ll become real collector’s items.”

Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm congratulatedMs. Pace, and thanked her for the work she’d doneto market the town.

“We realise that she doesn’t get to spend a lot oftime here, but the fact that she comes from MosselBay, and calls it home, has done amazing thingsfor the town.

“No estimate could really do justice to the valueof the marketing she does simply by being an ambassador for Mossel Bay,” she said.

DDream comes true forYani Tseng

Royal Pines was the scene of a golfing coronation last month as Yani Tseng was crowned world

No.1 after completing her Australian clean sweep in the $500,000 Ladies Masters.

Her now superstar status

is a far cry from the

baby-faced 15 year-old

who turned up at the same course

with a backpack and braces in

2006. She was given the nickname

“Ruby” after tournament pro-

moter Bob Tuohy had been ca-

joled into giving her and Gold

Coast schoolgirl amateur Amy

Yang invites. Tseng, a little known

amateur at the time, was on one

of her regular visits to Brisbane for

coaching lessons from her mentor

Rob Gibson.

This time around she stepped

onto the first tee as tournament

favourite ahead of Karrie Webb,

who has won the Masters a record

seven times. Tseng won with

authority as well, shooting a

24-under total after rounds of

67-66-63 and 68.

“I never expected this to come

true,” said Tseng who’s dreamed of

being the world’s best player since

she was 12.

“Everything is feeling so good,

winning, being world No.1.

“I’ve wanted to have my picture of

championship drive (where all the

past Masters are on display) since

I first came here in 2005.”

The fastest player to have won

three major tournaments after

being named LPGA Rookie of the

year in 2008, Tseng will be a na-

tional hero when she returns to

her homeland of Chinese Taipei.

The tiny country has not had a

world No.1 since T.C Chen be-

came the first golfer from Taiwan

to play on the PGA Tour in 1982.

“Hopefully the first page of the

newspaper,” she said when asked

how her move to world No.1

would be received in Taiwan.

“I think it is going to be huge.”

Tseng posted on her Facebook

page before her final round she

would be wearing pink and urged

her fans to wear pink as well.

Tseng arrived Down Under earlier

this month ranked No.5 in the

world behind her fierce rival Jiyai

Shinn.

But stunning victories in the

Women’s Australian Open and the

Masters have swept her to the

summit in an amazing fortnight

on the fairways.

Eight month’s Shin’s junior, she is

the youngest No.1 since the offi-

cial world rankings were intro-

duced when Sweden’s Annika

Sorenstam ruled the golfing globe.

Since then, Japan’s Ai Miyazato,

American Cristie Kerr and Shinn

have all had brief stints at the top.

“I don’t want to beNo.1 for one week ortwo weeks, I want tostill be there at theend of the year,” said Tseng,

WWorld Rankings - deep stuff!I don’t pretend to be either fan or fundi of the Official World Golf Rankings.

Except for a brief period when it was almost cool, I hated maths at school. And the OWGR are

based on all sorts of mathematical assumptions that make my eyes glaze over almost as much as

they do at a Tiger Woods press cover-up... errr... conference.

So I have no major quibble

discussing shortcomings of

the system, and even dissing

it when it seems to do bizarre

things. Heck, I’m even prepared to

be parochial in my criticism of it

if I think one of the Sunshine Tour

players is being hard done by. But

it is what we have, and, despite the

shortcomings, by and large it pres-

ents a pretty accurate reflection of

what’s what – and who’s who – in

golf in any given week.

Even when Tiger held on to the

top spot by the skin of his teeth

during a year of inactivity and

poor performances (on the golf

course too), it made sense to see

him rewarded for his extraordinar-

ily lengthy dominance.

And when Lee Westwood got to

number one without so much as a

handshake with a major trophy in

2010, it still made sense, especially

after I saw him playing at the Ned-

bank Golf Challenge. It was num-

ber one golf, no question. But I

get a little exercised when some-

one takes on the system in pursuit

of some agenda which seeks to

privilege one tour over another –

and you probably know exactly

what I mean. So it was with inter-

est that I read a Golf Channel ar-

ticle (read it here) on the subject.

The story quotes Aaron Ober-

holser – he was ranked as high as

25th in 2007, but was last seen at

682nd in 2009, admittedly as a re-

sult of injury – and he makes

points that are initially pretty un-

controversial. But then comes the

section that made my blood boil:

“You know how deep your own

Tour is, especially the guys who

play on both sides of the pond.

The European Tour is nowhere as

deep (as the PGA Tour). The top

15 are just as good as our top 15,

that’s proven every other year at

the Ryder Cup. But in my opin-

ion the European Tour gets

weaker substantially after that.”

It beggars belief that – even hid-

den behind “in my opinion” –

someone is so damn cocksure of

himself in that regard, with so very

little reason. I took a little look at

number 16 on each list (and ex-

cluded South Africans

and Australians who might mess

up an otherwise acceptable statis-

tical exercise) and thought that

Scotland’s Martin Laird and

American Sean O’Hair stacked up

pretty evenly.

I looked deeper too: Soren Kjeld-

sen and Brandt Snedeker are also

pretty much of a muchness at

30th spot.

And, to finally get to my point: I,

unlike Oberholser, am prepared to

concede that the match is pretty

even further down the rankings.

Perhaps more importantly, I’m

not prepared to suggest – on the

strength of lack of knowledge –

that one tour is much stronger

than the other.

But Europe is looking awfully

strong right now!

SSpitting Tiger, a hiddendragon?

For those that missedit, Tiger Woodscaused a storm byspitting on the greenafter missing a puttduring the DubaiDesert Classic. Hewas rapped on theknuckles by the Euro-pean Tour with anundisclosed fine, andhas since apologised.

The initial reaction is that he should either

have been disqualified from the tournament

or banned for a month or two for a gross

gesture that diminished Woods, and the game of golf

as a whole.

Both are extreme suggestions - but frankly no

amount of a fine would ever be a sanction for a man

who was reportedly paid £1.5 million appearance

money to show up at the event. Unless, of course, he

had been fined £1.5 million, plus his £15,000 or so

prize money.

Not that any tournament director anywhere in the

world ever would, or could, do either of those things

since they would be left wide open to being sued by

sponsors, the Tour, TV companies and, of course,

the man himself. That doesn't mean that it wouldn't

be a just punishment, though.

Yet despite Tiger's despicable behaviour, one couldn't

help but feel some sympathy observing him at the

weekend.

Watching Tiger used to elicit a combination of joy

and exhilaration: seeing any athlete at the top of their

sport in full flight is always a magnificent sight. Who

can forget Tiger destroying the field at The Masters

at Augusta in 1997? Or at the US Open at Pebble

Beach in 2000? Or at The Open at Hoylake in 2006?

Those days seem to be slipping away irretrievably,

however. To watch Tiger these days is to witness a

man so astoundingly unhappy that you could swear

he's a wage slave en route to a soul-crushing office

job, rather than a billionaire playing golf.

He made plenty of promises to change his behaviour

in that live televised apology to the world following

the revelations over his private life in late 2009.

But still he sears the air with obscenities when he hits

a bad shot, smashes his clubs into the ground, and

generally walks around like a bulldog chewing a

urine-soaked stinging nettle.

Iit looks like he needs another break from the game,

despite having barely played since crashing his car

into a tree nearly 15 months ago.

Maybe he knows it himself, and perhaps he's hoping

that someone, somewhere will one day ban him for

his tantrums and thus enforce that break. In doing

they might also give him the metaphorical kick up

the backside some believe he richly deserves.

Introduction Following the first edition of the Golf Travel In-sights report in 2008, the world has experienced amajor economic downturn, and, similarly to otherindustries, golf tourism has also been hit hard. This second edition is prepared with the aim tofind out about recent trends in golf tourism, howcustomer needs and preferences have changed andwhat is expected in the years to come.

Over 120 golf tour operators from 41 countrieshave participated in the survey. About half of theresponses were received from European golf touroperators, 18% from Asia and 22% from those lo-cated in the Americas, with the remainder beingAfrica-based or from Australia and New Zealand. For the purposes of this study a golf trip is definedas a leisure trip taken within a country or cross-border, which includes at least one overnight stayand when the traveler’s main motivation is to playgolf.

Peter Walton, chief executive of the InternationalAssociation of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO),provides an overview of the recent trends in theglobal golf tourism industry. IAGTO, the globaltrade organisation of the golf tourism industry has1450 member companies in 81 countries includ-ing 350 golf tour operators in 50 countries.

AN INSIGHT INTOGOLF TRAVEL

Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice this report is based on a globalsurvey among golf tour operators, performed during the summer of 2010.

Page 43: SAGT March Aptil 2011

www.sagolftrader.co.zaMarch/April 2011 41

S P E C I A L R E P O R T

Recent trends in golftourism Mainly due to the economic recession of the past 18months, 38% of the surveyed golf tour operatorshave experienced a fall in demand (up from 10% inthe summer of 2008). While 8% of them found de-mand to be stable, 54% still noticed an increase inthe number of golf tourists (albeit down from 73%in 2008). Although the average length of stay re-mained more or less the same, several operatorsnoted that golfers travel less frequently, i.e. thosewho used to go on 2-3 golf trips a year now only goon one. More than 40% of the survey participantsalso noted a decrease in the average expenditure dur-ing a golf holiday. While golfers have become morecost conscious, this finding can also be explained bythe discounted rates and packages available on themarket. In certain key markets, currency exchangerates have significantly influenced demand patterns. For example, the devaluation of British pound tothe euro has resulted in a drop of outbound tourismwhile local operators experienced a pickup in de-mand for domestic golf travel packages.

According to IAGTO, a significant proportion ofregular golfers, usually somewhere between 25-30%,frequently take vacations where they play golf. Thisis fairly constant from one country to another andhas changed little over the past decade or so.

Therefore the strength of an outbound market at any given moment is heavily dependent on the par-ticipation levels, the country’s economy and currency exchange rates. The major European markets ofthe UK, Sweden and Germany remain very strong, but the fastest growing markets include Switzerland,Austria, Denmark and the Czech Republic, where golf populations are relatively small, but growth ratesare high. Maximising market mix is an essential task for all destinations and resorts in order to providebuffers against variations in the performances of individual markets. Approximately 70% of golfers liketo find new places to play golf on vacation. This is great news for emerging destinations but a challengefor those more established. New courses in established destinations solve this problem as golfers can re-turn to their favourite locations but also enjoy new golf experiences. After a very wet, cold and prolongedwinter, golfers are going to be looking for guaranteed sunshine in 2010/11. Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt,Kenya, South Africa, Dubai, Abu Dhabi together with localised regions like Murcia and the Canary Is-lands will all be competing strongly with the established short haul destinations of Andalucía, the Algarveand Belek. Ireland, Scotland and France should all perform much better in 2011 whilst Italy, the CzechRepublic, Bulgaria and even Sweden will be vying to attract golfers away from the more traditional sum-mer golf destinations.

Page 44: SAGT March Aptil 2011

S P E C I A L R E P O R T

Today’s typical golf touristBased on our survey findings, the average golf tourist typically spends 3-4 days or a week on a short-haul, and 7, 10 or 14 days on along haul golf holiday. In regard toplaying activities, a golf touristgenerally plays 4-6 rounds of golfon 3-5 different courses on a one-week golf holiday. While the priceof a 7-day golf package (includingflights, accommodation and golf )can be as low as EUR 400-500,luxury trips can cost as much asEUR 5,000. According to our sur-vey participants, the greater pro-portion of golf tourists chose golfpackages in the range of EUR1,000-1,500. Regarding addi-tional expenditures, a typical golftourist spends EUR 150-200 a dayon average. Tour operators wererequested to weigh on a 5-pointscale the importance of variousfactors for a golf tourist whenchoosing a golf destination. While golf tourists care most about the quality of the golf courses at a des-tination, they are becoming more price-sensitive. Accessibility remains a key factor, and particularly theavailability of direct flights to a golf destination plays an important role.

Page 45: SAGT March Aptil 2011

S P E C I A L R E P O R T

Expected future trends forgolf travel While 80% of all surveyed tour operators expect aclear upswing following the economic crisis, one-fifth of them foresee stagnation or a gradual decrease(depending on the region in which they operate).Spain and Portugal are still expected to dominate thegolf travel market, whereas traditional golf destina-tions in the UK & Ireland and in the US are alsoforeseen to be among the hot spots in the upcomingyears. According to many, Turkey is one of the fastestemerging destinations offering great value formoney. Numerous survey participants expect im-pressive growth for golf tourism in Southeast Asia(i.e. Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia).

ConclusionWhether as a primary motivation fora holiday or simply as a secondary ac-tivity, golf attracts millions of holiday-makers worldwide. Golf tourism is animportant revenue generator not onlyfor golf facilities, but for all the asso-ciated service providers in a destina-tion. Golf tourists are generally bigspenders and are looking for qualityservices, while expecting great valuefor money. In today’s competitive en-vironment, it is crucial to understandthe needs and behaviors of golf touriststo develop a successful golf destina-tion. Our survey shows that an idealdestination would offer a minimum of4-5 quality, easily accessed golf coursesclustered at a location, at reasonableprices, and providing high quality ac-commodation facilities. While Spainand Portugal remain the most populardestinations, followed by traditionalgolf markets of the UK, Ireland and

the US, emerging destinations in the South-east Mediterranean and Southeast Asia can become a successstory if they follow a conscious and well planned development strategy.

NNew Tour opens forplayers in Middle East,

North AfricaGolfers from the Middle East and North Africa will have more opportunities to

develop with the creation of a new tour, vice chairman and CEO of Golf in

Dubai Mohamed Juma Buamaim said last month.

The new MENA (Mid-

dle East North Africa)

Tour would create

"windows of playing

opportunities" for professionals

and amateurs in the region and

would commence with four

tournaments from 2012.

"There is no shortage of talent in

the Middle East and North Africa

region and even the facilities are

second to none, but the players

lack regular exposure to high-class

competitions, so hopefully this

new tour will create the right

environment and develop their

skills.

"The prizes will be funded at first

by the Shiekh Maktoum Golf

Foundation, but we hope that we

will be able to find sponsors as we

go along.

"Also one day we are hoping that

the MENA Tour can slot two

events into the European Tour's

secondary Challenge Tour," added

Buamaim.

European Tour CEO George

O'Grady welcomed the an-

nouncement and called it a "won-

derful initiative."

"The hope is that the MENA Tour

will become one of our third-tier

tours which has a way into the

Challenge Tour but you will have

to play for a year or two first," he

added. Each event will comprise a

field of 109 players made up of 60

professionals and the rest amateurs

and carry a minimum prize fund

of $75,000. No dates or venues

have been setbut MENA Tour of-

ficials met with representatives of

a number of Middle East and

North African golf associations to

work on a schedule.

The tournament will receive

recognition from the R&A and

carry World Amateur ranking

points.

Buamaim said the three top play-

ers on the MENA Tour money list

would compete in the Dubai

Desert Classic and was hopeful

places could be made available in

the European Tour's other 'Mid-

dle East Swing' events – the Abu

Dhabi Championship, Volvo

Champions and Qatar Masters.

Europe tweaks qualifying format for Ryder Cup

The change announced last month means the top five

players to make the 2012 team will come from the

European Points list, which is money earned in the 12

months before the matches. The next five players would

come from the World Points list, which is world ranking

points accumulated during the same time.

Previously, the top four came from world ranking and

the next five from European Tour money. Had this

change been in place last year, Padraig Harrington and

Justin Rose would have earned spots on the team, while

Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez would not have

qualified.

Europe is changing its Ryder Cup qualifying process to strengthen its team through the

world ranking and reducing the captain's picks to two players.

In sulke

AMATEUR GOLF

Ano frills, no entourage guy, Harvey believed that good old fashioned hardwork and an unflappable self beliefwould finally take him to the winner’scircle.

So it came as no surprise to the 22-year-old whenhe messed up a chance to win the South AfricanAmateur Stroke Play outright and had to grind itout in overtime against Scotland’s David Law toroll in the winning putt and lift the trophy lastmonth.

“My card looked like a colouring book,” jokedHarvey. “Six birdies, five bogeys, definitely not

pretty golf. But at the end it things finally went myway, so I guess there is something to say for hardwork.”

Harvey’s workmanlike route around the No 1course was indeed littered with birdies and bogeysfrom start to finish.

One behind at the start of the round, Harveycaught up to Law at the fourth but two poor pitchshots led to back-to-back bogeys at the fifth andsixth. To shots back, Law bogeyed the seventh andHarvey holed a bunker shot to close the gap to one.

“I finally got my nose in front when I birdied the14th and he dropped at the 15th,” said Harvey, who made a solid par at the 16th to stay ahead butnearly lost the advantage again at 17.

“I drove the greenside bunker and Dave pulled offan incredible shot from the fairway bunker,” hesaid. “He had eight feet for birdie, so I knew I hadto up and down. I had to keep the lead going down18, because that hole has been my Achilles Heel allweek.”

Job done, Harvey held a one-shot lead at 15 underpar, but he wasted the chance to win it outrightwhen his nerves got in the way. After a reasonabledrive up the right, his approach finished just shortof the green and he skimmed his approach puttstraight through the green, 30ft past the pin. A two-putt bogey left the door wide open for Law,forced the play-off with a tidy par for a round of72.

“No doubt about it, the pressure got to me,” Harvey admitted, smiling. “Not once this weekhad I played the 18th well. I think it was in theback of my mind and I was telling myself I can’tplay the hole.

Local boy Harvey grinds hisway to SA Stroke Play win

Almost from the time he first hit shots as a three-year-old with father George

on the fairways at Mount Edgecombe, Jared Harvey has been a grinder.

AMATEUR GOLF

“In the play-off, I suddenly just relaxed about the whole thing. I was going to go with driver, becausethe wind was so fierce, but when Dave hit it into the trees on the left, I realised he was in a tough spotand I just needed to par.”

Harvey got to the green in two while Law, under pressure to go for the green, put his approach into thewater guarding the front of the green. His fourth shot flew the green, his putt ran through the greenand when his ball finally dropped, he had seven shots on his card.

“I felt sorry for him because he has been a solid competitor all week and to go out that way, must havebeen hard to imagine,” said Harvey, who rolled his first putt to within an inch of the cup and tidied upfor par, and the title, under thunderous applause from the large home crowd.

And there was an ironic footnote to his victory.

“I guess the term “like father, like son” is really appropriate now,” said the 22-year-old.

George Harvey won the same title twice. He beat Andries Oosthuizen in a play-off in 1973 and followedthe same route against Peter Todt, to clinch the title in 1976.

“This is an unbelievably special moment for me, to follow in my father’s footsteps like this,” he said.“I'm proud of the way I hung in there, especially with the wind up. I was pretty anxious and nervousand I had a lot of emotions going. To finally get the job done is a great feeling.

“I'm kind of lost for words. It's still pretty unbelievable.”

Ryan Dreyer carded a final round 71 to finish two shots behind the duelling leaders, while France’sClement Sordet snuck into fourth on 11-under-par 277 with his final round 71.

Sustainable golf

Sustainability is arguably one of the most important factors for developers to consider when creatinggolf developments and communities of the future. As Jonathan Smith of the Golf EnvironmentOrganization says “in its simplest form, sustainable golf development is golf development thatcan endure. It is determined by golf ’s own ability to continually multiply net gains to shareholders,

stakeholders and the environment, and is directly influenced by wider social, economic and environmentalprocesses.” But what do golf developments need to do to maximize ecosystem value, minimize waste andoptimize benefits to people and business? Some experts share their opinions:

Annika Sorenstam:"I am very passionate about course design and look forwardto growing that area of our business. Already, I have been fortunate to work along-side a highly experienced team. As we approach a new design or redesign we lookto capture the natural character of the site and landscape. It's very important topreserve the environment, spirit, and traditions of the game. “A major focus forus is water, which is such a valuable resource. We want our golf courses to helpclean the water and minimize its consumption by recycling and reusing the wateras much as possible. “I believe that golf courses are great natural environments forpeople and wildlife.

Lodewijk Klootwijk - Director,European Golf Course OwnersAssociation: "The sustainabledevelopment and managementof golf courses is essential forboth the image of golf and prac-tically the role of golf in society. For the growth, and therefore thefuture of golf, this is one of golf ’smost important initiatives.

Jeremy Slessor - Euro-pean Golf Design: Golfthat is well sited, wellplanned, well constructedand well managed can beenormously beneficial insocio, economic and envi-ronmental terms.

Often a slightly errant drive can endup nestled in thick rough. This

sometimes makes it impossible toreach the green in regulation.

A common mistake that mostamateurs make is that they tryto lift the ball out of the nestled

lie with too long a golf club.

out of thedeep rough!

In the picture above you can seethat I have driven the ball intothe rough with still some dis-tance to the green, 195 metres tobe exact. This would normallybe a 5 iron distance for me fromthe fairway, but this longer clubwould create too shallow anentry into the ball. In thickerrough this will cause you tomake contact with too muchgrass before striking the ball.

Page 79: SAGT March Aptil 2011

TUITION & INSTRUCTION

www.sagolftrader.co.zaMarch/April 2011 77

Good luck with this tip, and if you feel you need more help is mastering this area of thegame, please consult with your local PGA Professional.

Firstly pick a club with more loft and a sharper leading edge such as a 7iron. A good strike will lead to more distance as the grass between the balland club will reduce spin and make the ball travel farther thus ending upthe same distance as a five iron.

Next step in ensuring you get a steeper entry into theball is to grip the club shorter. Seen in this pictureabove I have gripped the club about 1 – 2 inchesshorter than normal. This will force you to make asteeper descending blow.

Now when taking the clubback you want to create assteep of an arc as you canand to do this you hingeyour wrists as early as youcan on your backswing. This will again allow you tocreate a steeper anglethrough the impact zone.

And the final step in your escape from the rough is probably the most im-portant. You must get onto your left side after impact and by that I meana total transfer of weight through the golf ball. Many amateurs do the op-posite and keep their weight on the right side and try lift the ball up withthere hands. This will lead to poor strike and may still leave you imprisonedin the rough.

The ball should come out lower than normal due to the steepness of entry, so play for that anddon t be too greedy. Follow these steps to ensure that you get back in play and by doing so avoidingthe big numbers that destroy scorecards. But the best solution would always be to avoid this partof the course to begin with!

In the pictures left you can see a normal stance anda stance where I have moved the ball position wayback in line with my right foot (right handedgolfers). Having the ball position way back in thestance will also aide the steeper angle of attack. This will help in contacting the ball first.

Meeste mense wat betrokke is by gholf is heel ernstig. Hoekom moet ek vra?

Nee – Nee! beginjulle self weer geniet as julle iets fantasties doen, wees bly, wys dit.

Tuks Golf Academy

March/April 2011

This is the second in a series of six tips brought to you by Tuks Golf

Academy. In the previous edition we dealt with the grip, here we focus

on alignment. Future editions will focus on stance, ball position,

posture and in-swing basics. In this month’s tip we will be covering

another very important fundamental...BODY ALIGNMENT!

Body alignment is so important because if you are not aligned to your

target, it will be nearly impossible to hit the ball to your target!

BODYALIGNMENT!

Page 85: SAGT March Aptil 2011

KIDS STUFF

www.sagolftrader.co.za 83March/April 2011

Good luck working on your Body Alignment this month! We’ll be back with another tip in the next issue!

The way to fix this is by gettingyour upper body- arms andshoulders, as well as your lowerbody- feet and knees and alignedparallel to your Ball-Target Line. You Ball-Target Line is the imag-inary line created between yourgolf ball and your target.

As you can see, when you alignyour body parallel to your Ball-Target Line you create imagi-nary lines that look like aRailway Track!

The most common fault withbody alignment is that theupper body- your arms andshoulders, and your lower body-your feet and knees do not alignin the same direction but criss-cross. More often than not, thisoccurs when the feet and kneesalign to the right of the targetand the arms and shouldersalign left of the target.

Could have been worse

Hey, George, did you hear the

awful news about John?" The two

golfers were talking over a drink in

the club bar.

"No what happened to him.'"

"Well he had a great round on

Wednesday - under seventy I heard

- anyway he finished early and

drove home, and found his wife in

bed with another man! No ques-

tions asked... he just shot 'em both!

Isn't it terrible?"

"Could have been worse," George

commented.

"How?"

"If he'd finished early on Tuesday, he

would have shot me!"

He's a liar !Sid and Barney head out for a quick round of golf. Since theyare short on time, they decide to play only 9 holes. Sid says toBarney, "Let's say we make the time worth the while, at least forone of us, and spot $5 on the lowest score for the day." Barneyagrees and they enjoy a great game. After the 8th hole, Barneyis ahead by 1 stroke, but cuts his ball into the rough on the 9th."Help me find my ball; you look over there," he says to Sid.After 5 minutes, neither has had any luck, and since a lost ballcarries a four-point penalty, Barney pulls a ball from his pocketand tosses it to the ground. "I've found my ball!" he announcestriumphantly.

Sid looks at him forlornly, "After all the years we've been friends, you'd cheat me on golf for a measly five bucks?""What do you mean cheat? I found my ball sitting right here!""And a liar, too!" Sid says with amazement. "I'llhave you know I've beenstanding on your ball forthe last five minutes!"

Aren't you giving up

Can you see your way to letting me

have a golf ball, Ben?" Ian asked

his old friend.

"But Ian, you said you were going

to stop playing golf," said Ben re-

luctantly handing over an old

spare.

"By degrees, Ben. By degrees,"

replied Ian pocketing the ball. "I've

stopped buying balls as a first

step."

Late tee off"Your late teeing off, Fred" "Yup, well being Sunday I had to toss acoin to see if I should go to church orto play golf"

"But why are you so late ?" "I had to toss for it fifteen times!"

How many strokes ?

How many strokes d'ye have, laddie?" the Scot asked his

guest after the first hole.

"Seven."

"I took six. Ma hole"

They played the second hole and once again he asked: "How

many strokes?"

"Oh no sir!" said the guest. "It's my turn to ask."

Hole in one....A group of golfers were putting on the green when, all suddenlya ball dropped in their midst. One of the party winked at theothers and shoved the ball into the hole with his foot. Secondslater a very fat player puffed on to the green quite out of breathand red of face. He looked round distractedly and then asked:"Seen my ball?"

"Yeah, it went in the hole," the joker answered with straight-faced alacrity. The fat one looked at him unbelievingly. Then hewalked to the hole, looked in, reached down and picked up hisball. His astonishment was plain to see. Then he turned, randown the fairway and as he neared his partner the group on thegreen heard him shout: "Hey, Sam, I got an eleven."
