    Basic Safety Checks

Background The GPT-9000 is a high voltage device and assuch, daily safety checks should be made toensure safe operation.

    1. Ensure all test leads are not broken and are freefrom defects such as cracks or splitting.

    2. Ensure the safety tester is always connected to

    an earth ground.

    3. Test the safety tester operation with a lowvoltage/current output:

Ensure the safety tester generates a FAILjudgment when the HIGH VOLTAGE andRETURN terminals are shorted (using thelowest voltage/current as the testingparameters).

WARNINGDo not use high voltages/currents when the HIGHVOLTAGE and RETURN terminals are shorted. Itmay result in damage to the instrument.

    Setting the Test Time (Timer)

Background The TIMER setting is used to set the test timefor the current test. The test time determineshow long the test voltage or current is appliedto the DUT. This test time does not includeRamp , initial start time or discharge time(note: GB does not have Ramp or dischargetimes). The test time can be set from 0.5 secondsto 999.9 seconds for ACW, DCW and GB and

1.0 second to 999.9 seconds for IR, with aresolution of 0.1 seconds for all modes. Thetimer can be turned off when in the specialMANU test mode when using the ACW orDCW test functions.

    Setting the Grounding Mode

Background When GROUND MODE is set to ON, the GPT-9000 grounds the return terminal to the ground. This mode is best for DUTs that are groundedto an earth ground by their chassis, fixtures oroperation environment. This mode measuresthe potential of the HIGH VOLTAGE terminalwith respect to earth ground. This means thatany stray capacitance/resistance that leaks to

earth ground will also be measured. This is thesafest testing mode, though potentially not asaccurate.

When GROUND MODE is set to OFF, thereturn terminal is floating with respect to theearth ground. This mode is for DUTs that arefloating and not directly connected to an earthground. This is more accurate than when

GROUND MODE is set to ON as any straycapacitance/resistance that leaks to the earthground from the DUT side of the testing circuitwill not be measured. For this reason, thistesting mode is able to measure to a higheraccuracy and resolution.

The GROUND MODE is always set to OFF for

    IR and GB tests.
