IMPORTANT

Connecting this digital camera system to an Olympus UIS or LB series optical microscope allows youto easily photograph and record the magnified images observed through the microscope.Optimal optical performance may not be achieved if the DP10 microscope digital camera system ismounted on a non-Olympus video microscope system.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

1. Use the provided AC adapter only.Using another AC adapter will prevent the camera system from operating at optimum levels and may cause it to malfunc-tion.

2. The cords and cables are not resistant to bending or twisting. Do not apply excessive force to them.3. To prevent toppling of the microscope, keep the total height of the microscope below 1m when attachments are mounted.

Safety and Operation Symbols

The following symbols are found on the camera and hand switch. Study the meaning of the symbols, and always use theequipment in the safest possible manner.

Symbol Explanation

Before use, carefully read the instruction manual. Improper use could result in personal injury tothe user and/or damage to the equipment.

Indicates “ I ” (ON) or “ ” (OFF) of the main switch.

Use the provided card or a commercially available 3.3 V SmartMedia.

Use the specified AC adapter (6.5 V/1.5 A DC).

1 Getting Ready

1. The camera system uses precision components. Handle it with care and avoid subjecting it to a sudden or severeimpact.

2. The image displayed on the LCD monitor may be affected when used near equipment generating strong electromag-netic waves. This is not a malfunction and will not affect the actual image being shot. To avoid interference duringoperation, keep the unit far from any source of electromagnetic waves.

3. When mounting the camera on a tripod, be sure to hold the camera box while turning the tripod clamping knob.4. Do not use the camera in areas where it may be subject to direct sunlight, high temperature and humidity, dust or

vibrations. (For operating environment conditions, see Section 6, “SPECIFICATIONS” on page 22.)

2 Maintenance and Storage

1. Clean all glass components by wiping gently with gauze. To remove fingerprints or oil smudges, wipe with gauze slightlymoistened with a mixture of ether (70%) and alcohol (30%) or EE System Cleaner (Olympus EE-6310).Since solvents such as ether, alcohol and EE-6310 are highly flammable, they must be handled carefully. Be sureto keep these chemicals away from open flames or potential sources of electrical sparks --- for example, electricalequipment that is being switched on or off. Also remember to always use these chemicals only in a well-ventilatedroom.

2. Parts other than the glass components should be cleaned by wiping with a clean cloth. Do not use organic solvent toremove major stains. Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a neutral detergent solution.

3. To avoid any degradation in performance, do not attempt to disassemble or modify any part of the system.4. When not using the camera system, keep it covered with the provided dust cover.

CAUTION The camera box incorporates a rechargeable lithium battery used for data back-up. Nevertheless, ifthe camera box is not used for about 2 days without the AC adapter connected, data (such as date/time) may be lost.Because the camera box incorporates a lithium battery, be sure to check local regulations for properdisposal procedures when disposing if it.

3 Caution

If the attachment is used in a manner not specified by this manual, the safety of the user may be imperiled. In addition, theattachment may also be damaged. Always operate the equipment as outlined in this instruction manual.

The following symbols are used to set off text in this instruction manual.: Indicates that failure to follow the instructions in the warning could result in bodily harm to theuser and/or damage to equipment (including objects in the vicinity of the equipment).

# : Indicates that failure to follow the instructions could result in damage to equipment.} : Indicates commentary (for ease of operation and maintenance).

Data Storage Caution

Recorded picture data may be lost in any of the following cases. Please note that Olympus as-sumes no liability for loss of recorded data.

· Improper handling of the SmartMedia (SSFDC). · Unauthorized servicing by the user or a third party. · The SSFDC is subjected to static or other electrical noise. · If the card cover is opened or the AC adapter is unplugged during SSFDC data recording or

erasure (including formatting). · General equipment failure.

To unplug the AC adapter

Set the main switch of the camera box to OFF, unplug the AC adapterconnector ³, then remove the AC adapter plug @ from the power outlet².

CAUTION

◆◆◆◆◆ Always use a power supply with the specified voltage.◆◆◆◆◆ Do not operate the camera system when the AC adapter plug is

not completely inserted into the power outlet.◆◆◆◆◆ Never insert or remove the AC adapter plug when your hands

are wet.◆◆◆◆◆ If the AC adapter or cord is excessively hot, or is emitting smoke

or odor, immediately stop using the camera system and removethe plug from the power outlet.

◆◆◆◆◆ Never attempt to power the camera system using an AC adapterother than the provided. Doing so could cause a failure in thecamera box or power supply or result in an unexpected acci-dent. Our warranty cannot cover problems caused by the use ofan AC adapter other than the exclusive AC adapter providedwith the system.

◆◆◆◆◆ When unplugging the AC adapter from the power outlet, do notpull it out by the cord. Always grasp the AC adapter body. Neverpull, bend or twist the AC adapter cord excessively or try to ex-tend it.

◆◆◆◆◆ If the AC adapter cord is damaged or disconnected or there is acontact failure in its plug, immediately contact your local Olympusrepresentative.

◆◆◆◆◆ Be sure to unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet when-ever the unit is not in use.

4 Inserting (Removing) the Card (Fig. 5)

#Commercially available 5 V cards cannot be used with this camerasystem. Always use a 3.3 V card. These are available directly fromOlympus or can be obtained from a dealer. Before using a commercially available 3.3 V card, be sure to formatit. (See page 14.)

· Ensure that the main switch @ is OFF (the switch is not illuminated), theninsert the card ² in the direction shown in Fig. 5. When the card is all theway in the slot, and close the card cover.

DIGITAL IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHING/RECORDING PROCEDURE

· Perform all necessary optical adjustments on the microscope.(The camera can photograph and record microscopic images under transmitted and reflected illumination as well asother observation techniques except fluorescence microscopy.)

· Using the TV adapter, perform the confocal adjustment between the microscope’s eyepiece and the LCD image. · If focusing is difficult on the LCD monitor (particularly at low magnification), mount the focusing telescope (FT) on the

eyepiece and adjust the parfocality correctly. This will allow you to focus using the eyepiece during photomicrography.

Insert a card.

Set the main switch of the camera box to ON.

Switch the light path of the microscope to the photographing (TV) light path.

Adjust the brightness of the microscope.

· Move the LBD filter into the light path. · Set the voltage to the indicator or the specified voltage.)

· If the brightness is too high, reduce it by using NDfilters or by decreasing the voltage.

· If the brightness is too low, increase it by increas-ing the voltage.

(Note) Brightness control based on voltage adjust-ment may alter the color temperature of theillumination light.

Check the focus and brightness of the specimen (referring to the LCD monitor.)

· Adjust the picture quality (resolution), SPOT, AELOCK, AE+/-, etc. as required.

· The brightness and colors of the images displayedon the LCD monitor in the REC mode may differfrom actually recorded images.

Press the EXPOSE button to photograph and record a picture.
