Page 1: Safety Moment

Knives are necessary tools which have been around since man first started making tools. The following guidelines will instruct you on how to properly use and care for them.

♦ Always cut away from you when using an open blade. Example: Try kneeling in front of box, place your hand on top to hold it, then draw the knife across the box away from yourself. (remember the gloves for you holding hand.)

♦ A sharper knife is always a safer knife. A sharp blade allows you to use less force and have greater control. If you feel the force you need increasing time to change blades.

♦ Use a solid surface to cut on. Never hold it in your lap or against other parts of your body.

♦ Never hold small objects by hand while cutting.

♦ Never use a knife for anything but cutting. It is not a pry bar or a screw driver.

♦ Immediately retract the blade if designed to do so. Many cuts result from thinking the blade was retracted.

♦ Extend the blade the minimum distance needed to do the cut. Over extending the blade can cause it to break off and increase your cut risk.

♦ If you drop your knife NEVER attempt to catch it. Let it come to a complete rest before picking it up.

♦ Do not run your finger down the blade to test the sharpness. If in doubt replace the blade. Choosing safer alterative knives can reduce risk by making it easier to change blades frequently or by shielding you from the sharp edges.
