• ALWAYS kEEP YOUR FIREARM POINTEd IN A SAFEdIRECTION. Never point a firearm at anyone or anything youdo not intend to shoot whether or not it is loaded. This is par-ticularly important when loading, unloading, or field strippingthe gun. ALwAYS control the direction of the firearm.

• ALWAYS TREAT EvERY FIREARM AS IF IT IS LOAdEdANd WILL FIRE. Do not take anyone’s word that the firearmis uncharged or unprimed – always check for yourself. Neverpass your firearm to another person until the action is openand/or on safe, and you visually check that it is unchargedand unprimed. keep your muzzleloading firearm unchargedand unprimed and safely stored when not in use.

• NEvER PLACE YOUR FINGER INSIdE THE TRIGGERGUARd OR ON THE TRIGGER UNLESS YOU INTENd TOFIRE. Ensure that other objects do not touch the trigger.

• ALWAYS BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET ANd WHAT ISBEYONd IT. Always be sure of where the bullet will strike andshoot only where there is a safe back stop free of obstruc-tions, water or other surfaces which can cause ricochets. Besure your bullet will stop behind your target. Bullets canglance off many surfaces like rocks or the surface of waterand travel in unpredictable directions with considerable veloci-ty. Do not fire randomly into the sky.

• NEvER CROSS OBSTACLES SUCH AS FENCES ORSTREAMS WITH A CHARGEd OR PRIMEd MUzzLELOAd-ING FIREARM. Always make certain your muzzleloadingfirearm is unprimed before crossing a fence, climbing a tree,jumping a ditch or negotiating other obstacles.

• SAFE FIREARM HANdLING IS YOUR PERSONAL RESPON-SIBILITY AT ALL TIMES. Firearms can be dangerous and cancause serious injury or death if they are misused or used inap-propriately. Safety must be the prime consideration of any onewho owns or handles firearms. Accidents are the result of vio-lating the rules of safe firearm handling and common sense.Firearm safety training is available. Contact your firearms deal-er, law enforcement agency, local sportsman’s club, the NRA,etc. for availability.

• YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FIREARM AT ALLTIMES. In owning a firearm, you must undertake full-timeresponsibility for your firearm’s safety and security. You mustprotect yourself and all others against injury or death frommisuse of the firearm 24 hours a day.

• FIREARM SECURITY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You mustsecure firearms safely from children and/or unauthorizedusers. Your firearm should always be kept unloaded andlocked when not in use. Never assume that the use of a lockis sufficient to safely secure your firearm. You must alwaysevaluate your personal situation and employ the security sys-tems that meet your needs and prevent children and unautho-rized users from gaining access to your firearm.

• APPROPRIATE USE FOR YOUR FIREARM MEANS USINGYOUR FIREARM FOR LEGAL PURPOSES. For example -target shooting, hunting and lawful resistance of deadly criminal force. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in compliance with all applicable laws and ordinances regarding the use of your firearm.

• NEvER RELY ON MECHANICAL FEATURES ALONE. Onlyyour safe firearm-handling habits will ensure the safe use ofyour firearm. This is your responsibility.

• ALWAYS SAFELY STORE ANd SECURE YOUR FIREARM.Safe and secure storage of your firearm is one of your mostimportant responsibilities. It is a full-time responsibility. Youmust always secure your firearm, ammunition, and loadingcomponents separately so that they are not accessible to chil-dren and/or other unauthorized persons.

• NEvER kEEP AMMUNITION ANd LOAdING COMPO-NENTS IN THE SAME LOCATION AS THE FIREARM. Store each in a separate and secure place.

• ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION THAT IS SPECIFIEdFOR USE WITH FIREARMS every time you handle yourfirearm for cleaning and maintenance.

• ALWAYS WEAR EYE ANd EAR PROTECTORS THAT ARESPECIFIEd FOR USE WITH FIREARMS every time you dis-charge your firearm. Make sure others in the vicinity of whereyou will be shooting do so as well.

• NEvER USE ALCOHOL OR dRUGS BEFORE OR WHILESHOOTING. Do not use your firearm if you are on any medica-tion which impairs, even slightly, your mental or physical ability.

• ALWAYS HAvE AdEQUATE vENTILATION. Dischargingfirearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or han-dling ammunition and loading components may result in expo-sure to lead and other substances known to cause birthdefects, reproductive harm, and other serious physical injury.Review the warnings and labels for all ammunition, loadingcomponents, and cleaning products carefully. wash handsthoroughly after exposure.

• BEFORE HANdLING ANY FIREARM, UNdERSTANd ITSOPERATION. Not all firearms are the same. Familiarize your-self with the mechanical features of any firearm you intend touse. If you feel uncertain about any operational aspects ofyour firearm, please contact Thompson/Center before pro-ceeding with its operation.

• ALWAYS USE THE CORRECT COMBINATION OF LOAdCOMPONENTS FOR YOUR PARTICULAR MUzzLELOAd-ING FIREARM as detailed in this manual.

• BE CERTAIN THE BARREL IS CLEAR OF OBSTRUCTIONSBEFORE SHOOTING. Mud, water, snow or other objects mayinadvertently lodge in the barrel bore. A small obstruction cancause a dangerous increase in pressure and may damage yourfirearm and cause injury to yourself and others.

• BE SURE ALL ACCESSORIES, SUCH AS HOLSTERS,GRIPS, SLINGS, SCOPES ANd OTHER ACCESSORIES ARECOMPATIBLE with the firearm and that the accessories donot interfere with safe operation. It is your responsibility tounderstand and follow all of the instructions in this manual, aswell as those which may be supplied with your ammunitionand loading components and any accessory.

• NEvER dISASSEMBLE YOUR FIREARM beyond the procedures outlined in this manual. Improper disassembly orre-assembly of your firearm may be dangerous and can leadto serious injury or death.

• NEvER CLIMB TO OR dESCENd FROM A TREE STANdWITH A PRIMEd MUzzLELOAdING FIREARM. NEvERRAISE OR LOWER A PRIMEd MUzzLELOAdING FIREARMTO OR FROM A TREE STANd. Failure to follow this rule maycause serious injury and/or death to the shooter or bystandersand damage to property.

• NEvER LEAN A CHARGEd ANd PRIMEd RIFLE AGAINSTA TREE, A WALL OR ANY SURFACE WHERE IT MAY FALLOvER. Once the rifle has been charged it is your responsibility toguard against situations that may result in an accidental dis-charge. Failure to follow this rule may cause serious injury and/ordeath to the shooter or bystanders and damage to property.

• USE THOMPSON/CENTER SCOPE MOUNTS ONLY.The current product catalog lists a series of scopes andmounts which are designed specifically for use with ourfirearms. These mounts make use of existing screw holes.Those who desire a scope sight should make use ofThompson/Center mounts. Do not drill additional holes in thebarrel as this could weaken the barrel structure leading to arupture. A ruptured barrel can cause serious injury and/ordeath to the shooter or bystanders and damage to property.

• NEvER MOdIFY ANY OF THE PARTS IN YOUR FIREARM.Do not add or replace any of the parts in your firearm unlessthey are genuine Thompson/Center parts and you follow theinstructions supplied by Thompson/Center. If you do other-wise, improper functioning may occur and serious injury ordeath may result. In addition to the dangers presented, theuse of non-factory parts, including but not limited to, stocksand springs, voids all warranties.

• NEvER TRANSPORT A CHARGEd OR PRIMEd MUzzLELOAd-ING FIREARM. when transporting your firearm, be sure it isuncharged, unprimed and securely locked. Safe and secure trans-portation of your firearm is your responsibility.

Many jurisdictions have laws thatmake it a crime to keep a firearm unlocked and in an area accessi-ble to children or others. keeping a firearm locked and unloadedwhen not in use is not only common sense safety practice... IT ISTHE LAw. You must be familiar with all local, state, and federallaws regarding the safe storage and transportation of your firearm.Failure to know and follow the law may result in unauthorizedaccess or use of your firearm by another. Obey all laws relating tothe storage and transportation of firearms. Your local policedepartment or gun shop can furnish you with available informationon storing and/or transporting a firearm safely and legally.

• YOUR FIREARM IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You must preventyour firearm from being stolen or from being used by untrained orunqualified individuals. keep it locked, uncharged, unprimed andsecured when not in use.

SAFETY RULES FOR THET/C® TRIUMPH®

In addition to the general Firearm Safety Responsibilities covered sofar in this manual, there are additional guidelines specific to blackpowder muzzleloading firearms that must be adhered to at all timesto ensure the safety of the shooter and others.

• NEvER USE SMOkELESS POWdER OF ANY TYPE OR IN ANYQUANTITY IN A MUzzLELOAdING FIREARM, ANd NEvER MIxPOWdERS. The use of any smokeless powder could result in adetonation or explosion which could cause injury and/or death tothe shooter or bystanders and damage to property.

• USE ONLY BLACk POWdER OR AN APPROvEd BLACk POW-dER SUBSTITUTE SUCH AS PYROdEx® TO LOAd YOURMUzzLELOAdING FIREARM. Never use even small amounts ofsmokeless powder, even if it is black in color. The use of any otherpropellant may cause injury or death to the shooter or bystandersand damage to property.

• NEvER SMOkE WHILE USING YOUR MUzzLELOAdER. Thespark from a lighted cigarette, cigar or pipe can ignite BlackPowder or a Black Powder substitute such as Pyrodex®, andPercussion Caps or Primers. Smoking around a charged and/orprimed muzzleloader, percussion caps, primers, priming powder orsupply of powder may cause premature firing of the firearm or anexplosion of the powder can, horn or flask causing serious injuryand/or death to the shooter or bystanders and damage to proper-ty.

• BEFORE LOAdING, MAkE SURE THE MUzzLELOAdINGFIREARM IS NOT ALREAdY CHARGEd. To make sure it isuncharged, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and insertthe ramrod provided with the rifle into the bore. Note the positionof the ramrod in relation to the muzzle. It will be slightly below theend of the barrel if the rifle is not loaded.

• NEvER ExCEEd THE RECOMMENdEd MAxIMUM CHARGELISTEd IN THIS BOOk. To do so could result in injury or death tothe shooter or bystanders.

• WHEN LOAdING, BE CERTAIN THAT THE PROJECTILE ISLOAdEd IN THE PROPER SEQUENCE ANd THAT IT IS SEAT-Ed FIRMLY AGAINST THE POWdER CHARGE. Serious personalinjury or death can result if the projectile is not seated properly. Toprovide a reference mark for future loadings, mark the ramrod atthe muzzle once a projectile has been loaded to the proper depth.NOTE: Be sure to recheck the ramrod mark if you change loadingcomponents or alter the ramrod.

• NEvER POUNd ON THE RAMROd. Black Powder andapproved Black Powder substitutes such as Pyrodex® arepotentially sensitive to impact and could ignite from impact.Always keep the muzzle directed away from your face or bodywhen loading.

• BLACk POWdER ANd BLACk POWdER SUBSTITUTESSUCH AS PYROdEx® LEAvE CORROSIvE RESIdUES INTHE BORE ANd ON THE FIREARM. A thorough cleaning isabsolutely necessary before storage for any amount of time tokeep the firearm functioning correctly and in safe a condition.

• UNdERSTANd THE TERMINOLOGY. “Charge” or “Charged”applies to the presence of a propellant powder charge andprojectile in the bore of the muzzleloading firearm.

• “Uncharge” or “Uncharged” refers to the opposite condition to“Charged” and indicates that the powder charge and projectilehave been either fired or removed and that the bore is com-pletely clear.

• “Prime” or “Primed” applies to the act of placing a primer, capor priming powder in or on a muzzleloader.

• “Unprime” or “Unprimed” refers to the opposite condition of“Primed” and indicates that the primer, cap or priming powderhas been removed from the firearm or is not in place.

• NEvER PRIME YOUR MUzzLELOAdING FIREARM UNTILYOU ARE REAdY TO FIRE IT. Your muzzleloader shouldremain unprimed until the instant before firing. After you primethe firearm, your full concentration should be on the target andthe act of firing.

• A SHARP OR HEAvY BLOW TO THE ExTERNAL HAMMERCAN FRACTURE PARTS ANd CAUSE A MALFUNCTIONOR dISCHARGE OF THE FIREARM. An accidental dischargemay cause serious injury and/or death to the shooter orbystanders and damage to property.

• NEvER HANd A CHARGEd MUzzLELOAdING FIREARMTO ANOTHER PERSON. Once charged, a muzzleloadingfirearm requires your complete attention. Never charge thefirearm and then hand it to another shooter. Equally, youshould never shoot a muzzleloading firearm that has beencharged by someone else. Only the person doing the loadingknows whether the firearm has been charged properly.

• dO NOT CHARGE YOUR T/C MUzzLELOAdER dIRECTLYFROM A CAN, HORN OR FLASk. A spark from a previous fir-ing may ignite the stream of powder being poured into thefirearm and cause the container to explode. The explosion of apowder can, horn or flask may cause serious injury and/ordeath to the shooter or bystanders and damage to property.Use a separate pre-calibrated measuring device containingsmall quantities of powder to charge your firearm. keep themuzzle directed away from your face and body when loading.

• ALWAYS kEEP SUPPLIES OF POWdER, PRIMERS ANdCAPS WELL AWAY FROM A FIRING POSITION OR SHOOT-ING BENCH. UNDERSTANDINGBLACK POWDER

Shooting muzzleloading firearms requires the shooterto be both a reloader and a rifleman at the sametime. It requires strict adherence to the instructionsset forth in this booklet. Failure to follow theseinstructions may cause damage to the firearm andinjury and/or death to the shooter or bystanders anddamage to property.

NOTE: Black Powder is manufactured in four specific types or gran-ulations for use in firearms. Generally speaking, it is the granule sizewhich determines the appropriate use of Black Powder. The largestgranulations are naturally the slowest burning and, therefore, workbest in large caliber rifles and shotguns. Pistols or smaller caliberrifles require a finer or faster burning powder. The priming powderused in the pan of a flint lock is extremely fine and fast burning forpositive ignition of the main charge.

FG (commonly called Single “F”)The muzzleloading enthusiast finds little use for this very coarseblack powder. It’s use is restricted to the large bore (10, 8, 4 gauge)shotguns of yesteryear.

FFG (commonly called double “F”)This is a very popular powder for .45 caliber to .58 caliber rifles. It isalso used for 12, 16, and 20 gauge muzzleloading shotguns. while itis not considered a pistol powder, it is sometimes used in very largecaliber single shot pistols. It is recommended for use in most T/Cmuzzleloaders.

FFFG (commonly called Triple “F”)Due to its wide range of uses, Triple “F” is the black powder that ismost commonly found on a dealer’s shelf. It is used in all percussionrevolvers, most single shot pistols, and most of the smaller (under.45 caliber) rifles. It can also be used to prime a flint lock if no 4Fpowder is available for that purpose.

FFFFG (commonly called Four “F”)The finest of all currently available black powders, Four “F” is bestused for priming flint locks. Due to its limited use, it is sometimes difficult to obtain.

UNDERSTANDINGPYRODEX®

Pyrodex® is a propellant powder designed for use in muz-zleloading cap lock rifles, pistols and shotguns. Pyrodex®is not Black Powder. In accordance with the manufactur-er’s instructions, Pyrodex relates closely to Black Powderon a volume to volume basis (not weight of charge). Inother words, a black powder measure that is set to dis-pense 70 grains of black powder will, in fact, dispenseapproximately 52 grains of Pyrodex (by weight). Thislighter charge of Pyrodex will provide a charge which is

ballistically similar to 70 grains of Black Powder. For all practical purposes,knowing the actual weight of a charge of Pyrodex may be informative, butnot necessary. Your black powder measure will dictate the proper amountby its graduations according to volume. If you want to know the actualcomparative weight of a Pyrodex charge, contact the manufacturer,Hodgdon Powder Co. Inc., 6231 Robinson, Shawnee Mission, kS 66202-1332.

Pyrodex® does not ignite as easily as Black Powder and, consequent-ly, it is not recommended for use in flint lock firearms. Flint locksrequire strong, positive ignition and should be charged and primedwith Black Powder of the appropriate granulation only.

PYROdEx® CTG - FOR BLACk POWdER CARTRIdGES. This powder was designed to be used in breech loading cartridgefirearms (rifles, pistols & shotguns) which were intended for use withBlack Powder. It has no application in Thompson/Center muzzleloadingfirearms. It is listed here simply for identification purposes.

PYROdEx® RS (or PYROdEx SELECT “RS”) RIFLE & SHOTGUNPOWdER. Designed for use in all calibers of percussion muzzleloadingrifles and shotguns, this powder has a wide application. It may be used with all Thompson/Center muzzleloading rifles and shot-guns. Pyrodex Select (RS) may also be used in these applications.

PYROdEx® P - PISTOL POWdER. Designed for use in most percus-sion muzzleloading pistols and cap and ball revolvers, this powderhas application in the (now discontinued) Thompson/Center Patriot™Pistol.

PYROdEx® PELLETS - These pre-formed charges are designed foruse in most Thompson/Center muzzleloaders and are suitable wherepermitted by state and local laws. Use the appropriate caliber andcharge weight pellet for your muzzleloading rifle.

The reader should bear in mind that Thompson/Center does not manu-facture or sell powder of any type. If there is ever a question as to theproper application of a particular powder or the safety of a given charge,write to the manufacturer of the powder. • Inspect the bore for obstructions and oil or grease (and clean ifnecessary). This is true with the rifle as it comes from the factory,as it has been treated with anti-rust compound that needs to becleared before use.

• Do not load the muzzleloading firearm until you have read and fullyunderstand this manual.

• Pivot the trigger guard down and forward and then tip the barrelopen (down). Look into the breech plug primer pocket and checkto make sure there is no primer in the pocket. Hold the muzzle upto the light and look through the ignition channel to ensure thatthere is no charge present.

• To make sure the Triumph® muzzleloader is uncharged (unloaded),keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and insert the ramrodprovided with the rifle into the bore. Note the position of the ram-rod in relation to the muzzle. The ramrod will disappear into thebarrel entirely (1/2˝ below the muzzle) if the rifle is not loaded.Commit this exercise to memory and practice it every time thatyou handle the Triumph®, or any other muzzleloader. Before youattempt to load it - before you store it away - before you hand it toa friend or leave it unattended, always check to ensure that thefirearm is uncharged and unprimed.

CHARGING THE T/C® TRIUMPH® CONTINUED

• wipe the bore free of all oil before loading. Be me tic u lous withyour cleaning - for the presence of any amount of oil in the barrelor cham ber can dampen the powder charge and cause the rifle tomisfire or hangfire (see section on “Cleaning”). Point the muzzle ina safe direction and snap several 209 primers in the breech plugbefore charging. This will help en sure positive ignition and clearaway any oil that may have accumulated in the ignition channel.

• Adjust the powder measure to dispense the desired charge and fillit with Black Pow der or an approved Black Powder substitute,such as Pyrodex®. To achieve accuracy, consistency in the pow -der charge is required. Fill the measure exactly the same eachtime. Set the rifle on its butt and hold the muz zle away from yourface and body as pic tured on page 22. Pour the mea sured chargedown the barrel and strike the side of the barrel sev er al sharp rapswith the heel of your hand. This will settle the pow der into thecham ber area of the bar rel. If you are using pellets - follow theinstructions provided by the pellet manufacturer. Seat the projec-tile firmly on top of the powder or pellets.

NOTE: Do not pound on the ramrod or beat the projectile withexcessive force, so as to crush the powder or pellet(s) and distortthe bullet.

Loading Conical Lead Bullets or Sabots When Using loose Black Powder or Granular Pyrodex®

• The procedures for loading sabots or conical bullets when usingloose Black Powder or loose Pyrodex® are basically the same.Care should be taken to seat the bullet or sabot firmly against thepowder charge. Do not pound on it. Again, mark your ramrod atthe muzzle, ensuring that each time you seat a bullet on the pow-der the projectile is seated to the same depth.

• If you are loading an all-lead conical bullet like T/C’s Maxi-Ball orMaxi-Hunter®, proceed as follows; do not use any kind of clothpatch with these projectiles. They should be lubricated prior toloading, and are designed to be shot as cast (not sized further).T/C Maxi-Ball and Maxi-Hunter® bullets come from the factoryprelubricated. However, if you find some unlubricated bullets, werecommend that you lubricate these bullets with an all-naturallubricant, free of petroleum, like T/C Natural Lube 1000 Plus™Bore Butter. when loading a Maxi-Ball or Maxi-Hunter™ bullet intothe muzzle, you will note how only the forward most bearing bandgrooves to the rifling when loading. The base of the bullet upsets(increases in diameter) upon firing, causing it to fill the grooves,thus stabilizing the projectile and aiding accuracy.

• when loading sabots, do not lubricate them. They are intended tobe loaded into the muzzleloader just as they come from the pack-age. In fact, for best results, it is recommended that all evidenceof oil or lubricant be removed from the bore before loading a sabot- the drier the bore the better in terms of optimal accuracy.

• Hold the rifle as pictured onpage 22 and pour your mea -sured pow der charge into thebarrel. Start the lubricated bul-let or sabot into the bore withyour fin gers. The base of theprojectile will enter the boreeas i ly with finger pres sure.Drive the projectile downabout four inch es into the bar-rel with the rod end of the bul-let starter (FIGURE 12). Usingthe ramrod, push the pro jec tilethe remainder of the way down the bar rel until it contacts thepowder charge. The sabot or conical bullet must be seated firm lyagainst the powder charge. Seat the projectile with ex act ly thesame pres sure shot after shot to aid in accuracy.

• Remove the ramrod from the bore and return it to the thimbles be -fore you prime the firearm.

Loading Conical Bullets or Sabots When Using Pyrodex® Pellets

• Start by loading the pellets into the bore,following the specific pellet manufacturer’sinstructions.

• Next, start the projectile into the bore andthen use your ramrod to push the projectilethe remainder of the way down the bore,until it is seated firmly against the pellet(s)(FIGURE 16). Do not pound on it, as this willlikely crush the pellets and effect the reliability of ignition. It couldalso deform the bullet and will undoubtedly affect accuracy.

• with successive shots, fouling may build up enough in the bore tomake loading of subsequent shots more difficult, or even impossi-ble. The more fouling that is present, the more difficult it will be toseat your projectile to the same depth. This will cause differencesin pressure, which will in turn affect accuracy. while at the range,you should clean (swab) your bore (with a bore cleaner likeThompson/Center’s Number 13® and suitable jag/patch combina-tion) after each shot, for maximum accuracy. In the field, you canexpect to fire two to three shots before swabbing may be neces-sary. The more powder you use in each charge, the more foulingwill build up. when you experience progressively more difficultbullet seating due to buildup of fouling, you must clean the bore orsafe loading will become impossible. See the sections on"Cleaning" and on "Unloading/Uncharging".

• Once the sabot has been loaded, it is nec-essary to carefully mark your ramrod toindicate the depth of the fully seated pelletand projectile combination that you areusing (FIGURE 17).

• If you are loading sabots, make sure thatthe bore has been cleaned and that all ofthe oil or lubricant has been removed. Adry and clean bore is better - when shoot-ing sabots - as this will improve accuracy.

• Handling 209 primers can be made easier with theprimer/deprimer tool (Thompson/Center part #31007802) that isprovided with your rifle - or sold as an accessory. Slide a 209primer into the slot of the tool as shown in the diagram below. Toprime the gun, place the protruding part of the primer into the holein the breech plug. Once the primer has been inserted, pull thetool away from the gun while leaving the 209 primer in the breechplug’s primer pocket. To remove a 209 primer from the breechplug, push this forked end under the rim of the primer. As youpush the tool forward, the primer will lift out of its hole allowingyou to grasp the primer with your fingers and remove it from thebreech plug.

• Prime the Triumph® rifle the instant before firing. with the muzzlepointed in a safe direction, open the action by pivoting the triggerguard down and forward - then tipping the barrel down - press a209 primer fully into the breech plug primer pocket. Tip the barrelback up and lock it into position by “clicking” the trigger guardback up into place - at this point the rifle is ready to fire.

• If you decide not to fire; make sure the gun is always pointed in asafe direction. Open the action and remove the 209 primer fromthe breech plug.

If you decide not to fire; first, make sure the gun is always pointed ina safe direction - then you must carefully lower the hammer fromthe “Cocked” position to the “At Rest” position. UNLOAdING A CHARGE FROM THE TRIUMPH® MUzzLELOAd-ING RIFLE

• Under normal conditions the Triumph® muzzleloading rifle isunloaded simply by fir ing it into a suit able and safe backstop.There are, however, some con di tions un der which the fire arm can -not be fired and the charge must be removed manually.

SOME OF THE MOST COMMON CONDITIONS UNDER wHICH THECHARGE MUST BE REMOVED MANUALLY ARE AS FOL LOwS:

• The projectile is not seated firmly against the powder charge. Stopim me di ate ly! Do not attempt to fire the rifle. You must remove thecharge and then clean the barrel.

• The rifle is loaded in a proper manner yet fails to fire after re peat edrepriming and clearing of the ignition channel.

• You are at a location that is unsuitable for discharging the fire armbe fore transporting it.

To remove a charge from your T/C Triumph® muzzleloader it willbe necessary to take the following steps:

• Tip the barrel open and make sure that the gun is unprimed.

• Remove breech plug (See Section on Speed Breech® xT™).

• Once the breech plug has been removed, point the muzzle up.Gravity should then cause the pellets or the loose powder to dropout. The sabot or bullet can then be poked out of the bore withyour ramrod. To push the bullet fully out of the barrel, it will benecessary to add the extended super jag (which came with yourrifle) to your ramrod, or, you may use a longer “range rod” if youhave access to one.

• If your propellant charge (pellets or loose powder) won’t come outas a result of gravity, you should remove the breech plug and pushthe entire charge out from the muzzle end with your ramrod (usingthe ramrod extension that came with your rifle). If that isn’t possi-ble, you should remove the breech plug and pour water into thebreech area of the barrel to fully dissolve the pellets or powder.After the powder charge is removed, push the bullet out with yourramrod inserted from the muzzle (again, with the ramrod extensioninstalled).

If you can’t remove the breech plug to push the charge out;

• It will be necessary to submerge the breech section of the barrel ina bucket of water to dissolve the powder charge.

• Disassembly of the Triumph® will be necessary to place the barrelin a bucket of water.

• Check to make sure the gun is unprimed by tipping the barrelopen and removing any primer from the breech plug.

• Detach the barrel from the receiver assembly as detailed in theDisassembly Section of this manual.

• Once the barrel is detached - submerge the breech end of the bar-rel in a bucket of water (hot water if possible). Make certain that atleast 8" of the barrel is submerged for at least 1/2 hour.

• Once the powder in the barrel has been soaked for 1/2 hour andrendered inert, pull the projectile from the bore by using your ram-rod with extension attached and a bullet puller installed.

• If, for any reason, you are unable to remove the charge in the man-ner recommended, soak the barrel again. Squirt oil into the primerpocket of the breech plug and into the barrel’s breech area inorder to ensure that the powder charge is completely inert, (if youwere to use water only - it will just dry out over a period of time),and return the barrel to the service department at the addressshown below with a letter describing the problem.

NOTE: Residue from burned black powder and black powder substi-tutes is very corrosive. The fouling or residue left over after firingyour muzzleloading firearm can be destructive to gun parts. Leavingyour firearm unclean with this fouling present can lead to a ruinedfirearm, as parts will rust and oxidize in short order.

• Also, the build up of fouling from shot to shot will produce shot toshot increases in pressure that will greatly affect accuracy. Thelubricant used, the amount of powder in the charge, and the pro-jectile used (sabot or all-lead conical bullet) will all affect theamount of fouling you will produce with each shot. Eventually, ifnot cleaned, the muzzleloading firearm will become impossible toload properly. Driven part way down the bore and blocked by foul-ing, a projectile may “hang up” and refuse to budge further.

• The Thompson/Center Triumph® muzzleloading rifle was suppliedwith a clean ing jag which is the proper size for cleaning the rifle.Use com mer cial cleaning patches (round or square) or pieces ofdis card ed cotton cloth ing to cleanthe bore.

• Use the cleaning jag that was pro-vided with the Triumph® (FIGURE24), and a cleaning patch saturatedwith a bore cleaner likeThompson/Center’s Number 13®Bore Cleaner or T17® BoreCleaner. Run the saturated patchup and down the bore a few times- to remove the fouling.

• Number 13® Bore Cleaner isspecifically designed for cleaningBlack Powder or Pyrodex® fouling (FIGURE 25).

• After removing all the fouling, followup with a few dry patches to thor-oughly dry the bore.

• Clean the trigger guard assemblywith a soft bristle brush dampenedwith some solvent. when the trig-ger guard is dry, lightly oil it.Reassemble and check for properfunction of the hammer and triggerassembly.

• Use a pressurized moisture displac-ing oil to clean and lubricate the fir-ing pin within the frame (from boththe front and back) - as shown inFIGURES 26a & 26b).

• Remove the breech plug from the Triumph® muzzleloader. To dothis, tip the trigger guard down and forward and then tip the barrelopen to be certain that there is no primer in the primer pocket.

• The breech plug is removed from the barrel by turning it 1/4 turncounter-clockwise (as viewed from the breech end of the barrel) byhand or using the wrench that was supplied with the gun. whenthe reference marks on the barrel and breech plug are aligned, thebreech plug can be withdrawn from the barrel with just your fin-gers.

Oncethe indicator marksare aligned (FIGURE28), the breech plugcan generally beremoved with your fin-gers (FIGURE 29). Ifthe breech plug doesn’t come outreadily using your fingers, a tap fromthe ramrod inserted down the barrelfrom the muzzle should do the trick.

• Once removed, the breech plugshould be scrubbed free of foul ingand then should be lu bri cat ed withan anti-seize lu bri cant like T/C'sSuper Lube™, before rein stal la tion.The threads inside the breech end ofthe barrel must also be well cleanedwith a stiff brush and solvent andthen dried and lubricated with anti-seize lube.

• Install the breech plugwith the “UP” mark-ing on top (FIGURE 30).

• Next in the cleaningprocess; fill a panwith hot soapy water.Submerge the muzzleend of the bar rel inthe wa ter and push awet patch down thebar rel (from thebreech end) on the end ofyour ramrod that has a jagin stalled on it (a jag comeswith T/C muzzleloadersfrom the factory). Pumpthe ramrod and patch upand down in the bar rel.This will draw water intothe bar rel and flush out thefouling. when the bar rel isclean, wipe off any ex cesswater and allow it to dry.

* After clean ing your Triumph® muzzleloading ri fle, it is rec om mend -ed that you light ly lubricate the metal surfaces of the ri fle. Do notuse heavy grease or oil, as during cold weather, excessive lubemay con geal and slow the hammer fall (or keep it from strik ing thefiring pin al to geth er) when the trig ger is pulled.

• with the barrel completely dry, lightly lubricate the bore with aqual i ty gun lubricant.T/C's Natural Lube 1000 Plus™ Bore Butteralso works well in this application. Re-install the breech plug, mak-ing sure that you have lubricated all of the threads with an anti-seize lu bri cant like T/C's Super Lube™. The breech plug must belocked into place by turning it clockwise 90 degrees by hand - orwith the breech plug wrench provided. Also, lubricate the threadsinside the breech area of the barrel with anti-seize lubricant.

• Remove any fouling on the receiver and exterior parts with an oilycotton cloth.

• After your Triumph® muzzleloader breech plug has been rein-stalled, check for proper functioning of the barrel and the ham-mer/trigger mechanism prior to loading and firing.

BREECH PLUG• The Speed Breech® xT™ breech plug that is used in the T/C

Triumph® muzzleloader has a replaceable heat-resistant O-Ring(FIGURE 35) that helps seal the breech area from fouling residue.This O-Ring can be easily replaced if it should become damaged.Use Thompson/Center #7531 replacement O-Rings - availablefrom your dealer - or by con-tacting the factory.

SPEED BREECH® XT™ BREECH PLUG CONTINUED

• Tighten the breech pluginto place by turning itclockwise (as viewedfrom the rear) just 1/4turn (FIGURE 37) - atwhich point the “flat” inthe bottom of thereceiver (FIGURE 38) isaligned with the “flat”on the breech plugitself (FIGURE 39) -allowing the barrel tobe locked into positionby “clicking” the trigger guardup and back into position.

NOTE: If the breech plug is notinstalled correctly, the “flat” onthe breech plug will not alignwith the “flat” in the frame andthe barrel will not close.

IMPORTANT: when re-installingthe breech plug after cleaningyour muzzleloader, you shouldlubricate the entire surface areaof the threads on the breech plugwith a good anti-seize lubricant(like T/C’s Super Lube™ - FIG-URE 41) as well as the threadsinside the breech area of the bar-rel itself. Failure to lubricate thethreads in both places may leadto difficulty in removing thebreech plug after firing thegun.

NOTE: Install the breechplug with the “UP” mark-ing on top (FIGURE 42).

• Different scopes have varying lengths of recommended eye relief.You need to choose a combination that allows for adequate clear-ance between the scope and your eye brow. Follow the instruc-tions supplied with the scope and rings for proper installation (FIG-URE 43).

SIGHT ADJUSTMENT• Move the elevation slide up or down its ramp to change the verti-

cal point of bullet impact (move it up to raise the shot’s point ofimpact). To do this, turn the El e va tion Adjustment Lock Screw(FIGURE 44) counter-clockwise (as viewed from the receiver end)to loosen it - then move the slide up or down the ramp (using thegraduation lines as a guide). Re-tighten the Lock Screw after mak-ing adjustments.

• To ad just the wind age it is nec es sary to slide the rear sight bladeassembly left or right after loosening the windage AdjustmentLock Screw. Move therear sight blade in thedi rec tion you want yourshots to hit-- (Example;moving the sight bladeto the right moves yourshots to the right andto the left move theshots to the left).Retighten Lock Screwafter adjusting.

• T/C Sabots come in several variations for .50 caliber muzzleload-ers; some sabots accept .44 caliber (.429˝ - .430˝ diameter) bulletsand others accept .45 caliber (.451˝ - .452˝ diameter) bullets. Ineither case, insert the correct diameter projectile into the sabotand press them together firmly, making sure the bullet is fullyseated to the base of the sabot.

HAMMER EXTENSION(on those models so-equipped)

• As shipped from the factory, the hammer extension is placed forright hand shooters (FIGURE 46). If you wish to reverse it for easyleft thumb operation, remove the Allen screw on the back of thehammer using the wrench provided with the rifle from the facto-ry. Gently tap the hammer extension out of the hammer from theleft side (as viewed from the rear) and insert it from the left side ofthe hammer. Re-tighten the Allen screw on the back of the ham-mer to hold the extension in place.
