Thank you so much for awarding a Penny Power Grant to National T.T.T. Society Illinois Chapter AE of Brown County in the amount of $300.00. By receiving the Penny Power grant now, we were able to take advantage of a wonderful summer book sale enabling us to buy 240 books to be given to needy children from birth to eighth grade at Christmas. The Penny Power Grant allowed us to buy 110, half, of the needed books.With Sincere gratitude,Lo Ann OrrNational T.T.T. Society / Brown County

Thank you for your generous grant to buy novels for my classroom. They are already ordered and ready to be read this fall. Without your support, I would not be able to have quality literature for my students.Thanks again, Katie O`Neal, St. Dominic School

Please accept our sincere appreciation to the Adams Electric Cooperative for the generous support from the Penny Power Grant for the John Wood Community College JDub Academy. As you know, JDub enriches the lives of area children through unique and enjoyable educational experiences. Your support creates learning opportunities for boys and girls who otherwise might not be able to benefit from this program.Sincerely yours,Barbara Dietrich HolthausJWCC Foundation Executive Director

The Memorial Garden (at the Veterans Home) is beautiful and changing weekly. We have established one new garden area and are now working on the Peace Garden. With the monies from the Penny Power Grant we will soon be putting mulch on a section of the Peace Garden using our new hand cart. We want to thank you for the grant money we received. Without the assistance of the Adams Electric Cooperative and your members we would not be able to complete many of our projects each year. We hope everyone there realizes how important a part you play in making the Memorial Garden a beautiful area where all visitors can come for a quiet respite. So often, while we are working at the garden, people stop by to thank us for making the garden a special place. One little girl told me it was her “secret garden”. You touch so many people with the grants that you provide to the surrounding community. With Much Appreciation,Janet Enroth and Cathy Shanks, Master Gardeners

Did you know every cooperative is required to conduct an annual meeting of

the membership? The purpose is to hold the election for the board of directors, share important financial information, and occasionally vote on other matters such as bylaw changes and new programs that directly affect our membership. And, of course, it wouldn’t be an Adams Electric Cooperative annual meeting without great door prizes, tons of vendor booths, fun activities for kids, entertainment, and a terrific meal! Adams Electric’s annual meeting is a community gathering where neighbors can meet new neighbors––or catch up with old acquaintances. As our lives get busier with the “errands of life” and more of our interactions with others are online (via social media), we must renew the value of face-to-face human connections. Very few organizations are uniquely positioned like Adams Electric Cooperative to bring together members of our local communities. Did you know that the population of Camp Point more than doubles on the first Wednesday after Labor Day each year? It’s true. The annual meeting usually draws well over 1,200 people to Bailey Park. If you’ve never attended, you’re really missing out! While rural Americans do a great job of staying connected to our neighbors (in part because we need to), it is not

something we should take for granted. The simple act of smiling, saying hello and shaking someone’s hand truly lifts both parties. To me, this is what the annual meeting is all about. The Cooperative exists to serve its member/owners and that’s why we work hard to make the annual meeting a real social event. Today, our country and our communities face many challenges. Overcoming these challenges will only happen if we come together. Knowing the challenges your electric cooperative is facing is vital to understanding how and why we operate. Attending the annual meeting is a great way to come together, meet employees and directors, and take an active role in the success of the cooperative. Adams Electric’s annual meeting is designed to take care of the important business of your co-op and the equally important business of building a real sense of community. All cooperatives serve both an economic and social purpose. While safe, reliable and affordable electric power is crucial to our mission, improving the quality of life for all members is at the core of what we do every day. (909674-001) If you have not attended the annual meeting in the past or if it has been a few years, we urge you to take the time to enjoy an evening with your co-op family. We get out of life what we put into it. Adams Electric is connected to you by more than just power lines. We are your neighbors, your friends, and your allies. We’re all in this together and we look forward to seeing you at your annual meeting. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 6at Bailey Park in Camp Point. Don’t miss it!

Local students gathered in Bailey Park on Wednesday, June 14, to learn about electrical safety and energy efficiency. This year’s school consisted of an Electricity School sailboat/wind challenge, a Safe City demonstra-tion, and five workshops. Beginners learned the basics of electricity and were able to make an extension cord to take home. Sec-ond year students used a soda can to make their own lamp. Third year students, in the circuits and switch-es class, were taught the basics of house wiring. Fourth year students toured the Brown County Wind Turbine. The final class allowed students to see how the Cooperative uses its mapping system to locate members, maintain equipment and restore power during outages. Instructors were: Laura Berg-man, Pat Boylen, Tim Brecht, Judie Flesner, Duane Jones, Brad Koenig, Mike Ohnemus, Bill Stalder, and Kraig Street of Adams Electric Cooperative; Shelby Crow, Richlyn Hoener, Sheri Merry, and Jeremy Reynolds of University of Illinois Extension; Chris Brassfield, Sherri Fuller, and Carl Fisher of Ameren CIPS; and Haley Dotson, former participant. Electricity School is sponsored annually by Adams Electric Coop-erative, Ameren CIPS, and Univer-sity of Illinois Extension.

This event, sponsored by the electric and tele-phone cooperatives of Illinois since the late 1950s, is an introduction to our democratic form of government and cooperatives for rural youth. The students met with Con-gressmen and were among 64 rural Illinois youth leaders selected for the trip. The Illinois students joined 1,802 young leaders from across the country. In addition to the Capitol, they also visited Arlington National Cemetery, the Washington National Cathedral, several Smithsonian Museums, the U.S. Holocaust Me-morial Museum, the World War II

Memorial, memorials to Presidents Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington and Roosevelt, the National Archives, the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, the Newseum and a number of other historical sites. Sophomores and juniors in high schools that are within the service area of Adams Electric Cooperative and Adams Telephone Co-Operative are eligible to participate in the an-nual program. Many businesses use the word “members” to describe their custom-ers. Places like Sam’s Club, Costco and American Express like to refer to their customers as members. With a Cooperative, our customers are our members but they are also member-OWNERS. There’s a difference. Cooperatives are unique busi-nesses because they are owned by you, the member. There are several benefits to being a member-owner of Adams Electric Cooperative. You have a voice in the way we run the co-op. Members elect the co-op’s board of directors and have the ability to run for a seat on the board if they wish. Your vote and participa-tion help shape the direction of the cooperative. You have the right to know how we operate and how decisions are made that directly impact you. Electric co-ops were established to provide at-cost electric service.

Providing safe, reliable and afford-able power has remained our mission since day one. We are not-for-profit. Unlike investor-owned utilities, where the profits go to stackholders, electric co-ops do not earn profits. Instead, any margins or revenue remaining (after all expenses have been paid) are returned to members in the form of capital credits. Capital credit returns are based on each member’s percentage of services used. We are local, community-fo-cused businesses. Because we are owned by the members we serve, electric cooperatives have a strong commitment to our local com-munities. In addition to providing safe, reliable and affordable power, electric co-ops are involved in local community development programs and projects, such as Penny Power, economic development programs, EnergyWyse loans, Youth Tour,

Electricity School, First Responder Training, etc. We are committed to innovation. Electric cooperatives are nimble and able to respond quickly to changing member needs. We are committed to experimenting and innovating in ways that benefit the local communi-ties and members we serve. We are guided by a set of prin-ciples. All co-ops operate according to the same set of Seven Coopera-tive Principles: voluntary and open membership; democratic member control; members’ economic partici-pation; autonomy and independence; education, training and information;

cooperation among cooperatives; and concern for community. These principles guide every decision made by the co-op. It is up to the employees, the board of directors and the members like you to ensure that the principles and values do not fade over time. We invite you to learn more about Adams Electric Coopera-tive. Read your Adams Outlet each month. We do our best to keep you informed in this newsletter. Visit our website at adamselectric.coop. We provide a wide variety of informa-tion on our website to make learning about your cooperative easy. If you

have questions about the Coopera-tive, you’re likely to find the answers on our website. If not, give us a call. We’re always happy to provide more information. And, last but not least, we hope you’ll join us at YOUR Co-operative’s Annual Meeting on the evening of Wednesday, September 6 at Bailey Park in Camp Point. Next month, we’ll mail the Annual Report which provides all the details for the Annual Meeting. See you there!
