Factors conducive to overboard falls prevention and

ergonomics

Overboard falls prevention1. Remove trawl (ropes) close to fisher's feet

2. Increase gunwale height to the hauler working station

3. Increase fishermen's handhold height on the trap’s bridle while hauling

4. Fisher standing far-off vessel bulwark

Ergonomics5. Use gunwale as a support for hauling lobster trap more easier

6. Use the hauler’s hydraulic power as much as possible

• System with low hauler far-off bullwark (SLHF-OB) should be usable in the vast majority of Quebec’s lobster fishing boat since the decks are increasingly large

• SLHF-OB should be acceptable by Magdalen lobstermen since new actions to both working stations would be in continuity with their current practices

• SLHF-OB should also be acceptable to Gaspélobstermen because of the ease of loading the traps onboard safely and ergonomically.

Applicability, acceptability and

feasability of both systems

Page 20: Safety design lobster boats: · 2017. 3. 28. · ergonomics Overboard falls prevention 1. Remove trawl (ropes) close to fisher's feet 2. Increase gunwale height to the hauler working

• System with high tilted pivoting hauler (SHTPH) fitted out in stern fishing would also be applicable to a large majority since we observed it on lobster boats of all lengths

• SHTPH is already accepted by some Gaspé fisher, their number is growing.

• In the Maggies, work to raise awareness among boat owners should be carried out

Applicability, acceptability and

feasability of both systems

Page 21: Safety design lobster boats: · 2017. 3. 28. · ergonomics Overboard falls prevention 1. Remove trawl (ropes) close to fisher's feet 2. Increase gunwale height to the hauler working

• SHTPH, installed at midship, near the wheelhouse, is observed on some Gaspé lobster boats, however it remains to be confirmed that the proposed design marks would be applicable.

• In terms of feasibility, it would be possible for captains to modify their systems at reasonable costs by keeping them simple and recovering equipment and materials currently in use.

• The rope separating panel would be advantageous. However, its practicality should be well demonstrated since it is the innovative element of both systems

feasability of both systems

Falls overboard prevention (P) and

real-work fishing ergonomics (E)

Customized gunwale traps rack with rope’s chute• (P) A way to eliminate the rope on the deck during trawls catch and release

High tilted pivoting haulerAllow to raise the traps higher while freeing workspace in front of the fisher• (P) Fisher less lean over bulwark and (E) facing traps to set them easily on the gunwale

(P) Could allow the installation of a higher bulwark

• (E) Better use of hauler power effort lessening

Systems designed to improve operations at hauler and trawls rack working stations

Page 23: Safety design lobster boats: · 2017. 3. 28. · ergonomics Overboard falls prevention 1. Remove trawl (ropes) close to fisher's feet 2. Increase gunwale height to the hauler working

Low hauler far-off bulwarkUnder the action of the hauler, traps round the gunwale and they embarks on much of its length• (P) Fisherman is away from the bulwark

• (P) Allow the installation of a higher sheer strake=transition zone toward trawls rack

• (E) Efforts notably reduced; Maximum use of hauler power

Rope panel separator-InnovationA good way to eliminate rope on deck during trawls hauling and release• (P) Less risk to be entangle if a line (or a part of) drops accidentally into the seawater

• (E) Improved posture and stability Allow fishers to work with feet flat and anchored

on deck •

• (P) Lesser loss of balance; (E) Reducing musculoskeletal stresses: heavy lobster traps
