Rights and Responsibilities
Rights guide us through what we are allowed to do as humans.
A free educationAccess to good quality healthcareA fair standard of living
The real world...• Every person in the UK has a right to an
education.
• As an individual, it is our responsibility to do our best, be a positive citizen and work hard to reach our full potential.
...but we do all have the same responsibilities.
Depending on the country you live in, you may not have the same rights as everyone in the world...
Do we have rights and responsibilities in the online world?
Have you ever? Has anyone in this room ever
changed someone else’s Facebook status without asking them first?
Have you ever? The law in the UK prohibits people from
changing somebody else's "computer records," even if given permission to access them.
Don’t let your common sense log off when you log in there could be serious consequences
Have you ever?Streamed or downloaded
songs from services that don't have an agreement with the copyright owner
Have you ever?In the UK, some rights owners have
been aggressive about music and films being downloaded illegally. In some cases they have successfully
prosecuted individual downloaders. Don’t risk violating copyright law as you might be used as an example
Have you ever?Used an excerpt from another blog
post and included the link to the author's blog, without asking for
permission
Have you ever?As with reproducing photos, copyright
law applies to any written content, in print or online
Make sure you get an author’s permission before you post.
Have you ever?Used offensive language against
someone?Spread a rumour about someone
online?Sent unwanted messages to someone?
Have you ever? All of these could be seen as
cyberbullying. You may not realise that your actions
online could be hurtful. Be responsible of your behaviour
online.
LawsThere are laws to protect you online
and there are laws that prevent you from doing certain things.
You do still have rights but you need to be responsible.
Get the balance right
Using this poster as a guideline write your own statement on your class charter about the ‘Rights and Responsibilities’ you believe you should have online.
