LEADING THE WAY IN SAFE EXCAVATION

"There are enough pipes and cables buried

under our streets to stretch to the moon

and back ten times, but we don't know where

many of them are.

Four million holes are dug each year in the

nation's roads - one every seven seconds - to

repair pipes and cables or install new ones, at

an estimated cost of £1bn per annum. With

indirect costs, such as congestion, this rises

to an estimated £5bn p.a. - over £80 for

every inhabitant of the UK"

John Mee Construction Limited

(established in 1993) are specialists in deep drainage, and having appreciated the associated problems with excavating around services, are committed to looking for a safer and more economical alternative.

Following an award for a major city centre contract in 2005, specified hand-dig only due to being heavily congested with underground services, we decided to invest in our first vacuum excavator.

This contract which was completed successfully brought an award for innovation and safety. Since then it has proved to be a 'ground-breaking' success applied to various applications and is an intrinsically safe system for uncovering and exposing the threat from buried services.

Our vacuum excavation fleet has been adapted to a necessary standard to enter and work within petrochemical sites. All operators receive specialist vacuum excavation training.

John Mee Construction have recently formed a sister company ‘Vac-ex Ltd’ (also based in Doncaster). Vac-ex are designers and manufacturers of vacuum excavators, suppliers of parts, consumables and training. For more information on this company please visit www.vac-ex.co.uk

No two jobs have the same characteristics. Call on our experience for bespoke solutions in achieving Health & Safety, programme and budget requirements.

Operated Training

All our operators undergo 120 hours training, providing our customers with a competent and safe service - Health & Safety is of paramount importance in every aspect of vacuum excavation.

As a contractor, you will frequently find underground services on sites that require hand dig to expose and identify. A nightmare situation which you

have to cope with everyday, until now.

FULLY OPERATED & NON OPERATED VACUUM EXCAVATION HIRE

YOU NOW HAVE

TWO CHOICES

VACUUM EXCAVATION

Outsource hand dig to possible unskilled workers

Success needs micro-management of hand dig

Inefficient method due to delicate nature of job

Wide trenches and large diameter trial holes

Increased risk of injury and back strain

Increased chance of service strikes

Own workforce reluctant to hand dig

Health & Safety record at risk

Low worker morale

Repetitive work

Installation & hire cost of shoring solutions

AVOID DANGER

No damage to underground services

Safer & faster than hand dig

Maintain Health & Safety record

More cost effective than hand dig

Keeps programmed works on target

Reduced legal and environmental issues

Reduces injuries and claims from operatives

Reduces repairs to respective underground networks

Reduced utility strikes

Reduced size of excavations -minimised waste cost

Compacted clays can be excavated

No spoil on site - less traffic disruption

Improved access over grabs as no side capture problems

Good excavation output

Vacuum excavation systems help create a reduced excavation size by removing soil via vacuum into a debris tank, therefore removing unsightly waste at the side of the road. The system can help reduce the amount of equipment used to undertake the activity, such as mini excavator and separate waste removal vehicle(s) (grab wagons).

The AIR-EX system is the safest way to remove material from unknown utilities, obstructions and tree roots being non aggressive and non invasive.

It is an inherently safe system for exposing buried utilities and tree roots providing a quick and clean method of material removal from these awkward and sensitive areas, by using a high velocity column of air to agitate and displace porous and semi porous ground conditions whilst leaving non porous objects unaffected.

The AIR-EX's innovative design allows for different length and style nozzles being easily interchanged dependent on ground conditions, application and excavation depth.

Vacuum excavation is the safe way to remove material from unknown obstructions or services.

As well as being non-destructive our process has a very unique property in that it can excavate very narrow and deep holes or trenches - 3 meters deep by 90mm wide is easily achievable. The soil removal process is very rapid and can save between 4-5 times the time taken over hand dig. Due to less soil being removed, less backfill being needed and smaller reinstatements required, the cost savings when compared to hand dig are very significant.

WATER METER CLEAN OUT EMPTYING OPERATION

Uses water as medium to agitate ground

Uses water pump on machine

Does not create dust cloud when digging

Spoil suitable for backfill when SMA added

(Please contact for further information)

Reduction in number of barriers used

Water acts as its own lubricant

Damage to area surrounding the excavation zone is minimised

Water works in almost all soil conditions

Water is far more productive, especially in tough soils

Handles clay with ease

Water controls static electricity

Water can be heated for frozen ground excavation

Water prevents the sandblasting effect of air

FULLY OPERATED & NON OPERATED VACUUM EXCAVATION HIRE

Vacuum excavation is the safe way to remove material from unknown obstructions or services.

As well as being non-destructive our process has a very unique property in that it can excavate very narrow and deep holes or trenches - 3 meters deep by 90mm wide is easily achievable. The soil removal process is very rapid and can save between 4-5 times the time taken over hand dig. Due to less soil being removed, less backfill being needed and smaller reinstatements required, the cost savings when compared to hand dig are very significant.

WATER METER CLEAN OUT EMPTYING OPERATION

Uses water as medium to agitate ground

Uses water pump on machine

Does not create dust cloud when digging

Spoil suitable for backfill when SMA added

(Please contact for further information)

Reduction in number of barriers used

Water acts as its own lubricant

Damage to area surrounding the excavation zone is minimised

Water works in almost all soil conditions

Water is far more productive, especially in tough soils

Handles clay with ease

Water controls static electricity

Water can be heated for frozen ground excavation

Water prevents the sandblasting effect of air

Mounted on a motorised 4-wheel drive chassis for easy manoeuvring, the AIR-VAC is powered by a standard 2-tool compressor.

The AIR-VAC not only creates a powerful vacuum to remove material but it also supplies the AIR-EX with a feed to agitate more stubborn ground (compressor not supplied).

Excavated material is drawn into the debris pod on the unit, while the air stream is cleaned and exhausted, via silencers, back into the atmosphere.

BENEFITS

The AIR-VAC sits on linear rollers that enable the unit to move from its normal operating position to a raised tipping position. This allows for the excavated material to be released into various collection facilities, such as a wheelbarrow, waste bag, skip, dumper or direct reinstatement.

By utilising the small debris pod, the operator is able to be more selective of the materials being excavated this prevents, cross contamination enabling the materials to be firstly dropped next to the excavation and then re-cycled back into the excavation.

To empty the AIR-VAC, there is a trap door in the base of the debris pod. The release handle is located on the front of the unit for easy access.

Once emptied, the unit is closed by either lowering the pod (self-close mechanism), or while raised, simply making use of the slam-bolt mechanism.

The front floating axle provides the additional support required to counteract the change in the centre of gravity while tipping.

The AIR-VAC features vacuum pumps, powered by compressed air and generates 700 m3/hr of airflow and up to 22in Hg of vacuum.

Having agitated the ground using the AIR-EX lance, the AIR-VAC system draws the excavated material via the vacuum digging pipe into a debris pod where it is separated from the air stream through a 5 stage process. Whilst the material is being collected in the debris pod, the air stream (by then carrying only minor particles) is moved through both a 5 micron filter and vacuum pumps before being exhausted via silencers back into the atmosphere.

The filtration on the AIR-VAC is designed to allow any loose material that has entered the system to fall into the debris pod automatically. This prevents any build up, ensuring the unit remains efficient, whilst also removing the need for repetitive cleaning and servicing.

Depending on the size of the host chassis, the AIR-VAC can be utilised with various sizes of debris pod, dependent on the job description and site requirements. Please contact VAC-EX Ltd for information.
