Formula SAE®
- Auto Club Speedway of California- Michigan International Raceway
Formula SAE (FSAE) challenges students to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with small formula-style racing cars. Teams spend 8-12 months designing, building and preparing their vehicles for a competition. These cars are judged in a series of static and dynamic events, including technical inspection, cost, presentation, engineering design, solo performance trials, and high performance endurance. Restrictions on the car frame and engine are limited to inspire creativity and imagination, to test knowledge, and to improve learning.

SAE Aero DesignSM
- Fort Worth, Texas- Marietta, Georgia
SAE Aero Design includes two regional competitions that challenge participating teams to conceive, design, fabricate, and test a radio controlled aircraft that can take off, land, and optimally meet the mission requirements. This exercise allows students to apply knowledge gained in the classroom in a real work environment. To help develop the students’ written and oral communication skills, a sizable percentage of each team’s score is devoted to the design report and oral presentation required in the competition. Teams may participate in one or more classes of competition: Regular, Open and Micro - each presenting unique challenges.
Baja SAE®
3 Regional Competitions
Baja SAE challenges engineering students to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain and in some competitions, water. As in real work situations, these future engineers work together as a team to discover and resolve technical challenges in design, test, and manufacturing, as well as business issues. The most rugged of all the competitions, Baja SAE also gives students the first-hand challenge of pursuing their passion while managing real-life demands and priorities. Each team’s goal is to design and build a prototype of an all-weather, rugged, single-seat, off-road recreational vehicle intended for sale to the nonprofessional weekend off-road enthusiast. The vehicle must be safe, easily transportable and maintainable with standard tools – and of course, fun to drive!
Reach nearly 3,000 highly motivated students during the two competitions!
See over 3,300 students race during the
3 exciting regional competitions each year!
This event inspires over 900 enterprising students to soar each year!
SAE Supermileage®
Marshall, Michigan
During this competition, students are challenged to develop and construct a single-person, fuel efficient vehicle. Vehicles are powered by a small four-cycle engine and run a specified course with the vehicle obtaining the highest combined kilometers per liter (miles per gallon) rating plus design segment points to win the event. Students have the opportunity to set a world fuel economy record and increase public awareness of the importance of vehicle fuel economy.
Clean Snowmobile ChallengeTM
Houghton, Michigan
This design competition challenges students to cost-effectively reengineer an existing snowmobile to reduce emissions and noise while maintaining or improving the performance characteristics of the original snowmobile. Teams may compete in the following classes: internal combustion or zero-emissions electric sleds. Modified snowmobiles compete in a variety of events including emissions, noise, fuel economy/endurance, acceleration, handling, static display, cold start and design.
Formula Hybrid Loudon, New Hampshire
In this challenge, students must design, build, and race an open-wheel, single-seat fuel-electric hybrid car, following specifications that emphasize drivetrain innovation and fuel efficiency in a high performance application. This competition builds on the Formula SAE program and takes it to the next level by adding a new layer of complexity and technical challenges.
