SADDLE OAK CLUB NEWSSADDLE OAK CLUB NEWSOCTOBER 2015OCTOBER 2015
OCT 06 BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING OCT 07 HOA MEETING GUEST SPEAKER REFRESHMENTS OCT 28 FMO MEETING AT OAK BEND OCT 31 HALLOWEEN GOLF CART PARADE, DANCE PARTY
Welcome Fall! It’s starting to cool a little and our winter residents are returning. We welcome both. New folks are moving in and I encourage all to sample the large variety of activities we have here at Saddle Oak Club. We have a wide range of activities that covers quiet to robust actions. Several groups enjoy eating out. We have regular pool/billiard tables upstairs and two new “bumper pool” tables in the library. You can find many kinds of card games and new players are welcome. We will be happy to teach you the games. Sewing and ceramic groups are active. There are indoor and outdoor venues. Be sure to check the activities page in our Newsletter for times and places. As we return to our fall and winter schedules, I want to remind everyone that activities take volunteers to make them a reality. You do not need to be an expert or professional to lead an activity. We need folks to spearhead an occasional Saturday morning coffee, Bingo Café, holiday dinner or Pot Luck dinner. We have guidelines that help you plan them. Volunteers are also needed for the library, Crime Watch and the Newsletter. If there is a new activity you would like to start, come to a HOA Board meeting to start the process. Please take an opportunity to volunteer. Remember, many hands make the load easier to handle.

CHRISTMAS PROJECT FOR THE VETERANS’ VILLAGE SPONSORED BY JOANN BARBER – 304-8579 and
Rosemary Carson – 304-8232
The Veterans’ Village has requested ditty bags again this year. They were loved and appreciated by last year’s efforts because every resident there received something special.
This quilt is to be raffled in November and December for donations to fund the needs of the Veterans’ Village, which is supported entirely by the community. Originally I had planned to raffle the quilt until the Director begged for the ditty bags again. We will accept donations at that time. Any cash or donations from the quilt will be put into a check by the HOA. So many, many thanks go to the SOC sewers and quilters and to all who help this community project with me.
SUGGESTIONS: Small hand games – Playing cards – DVDs – Cologne – Deodorant – After Shave – Razors – Lotion – Gum/Candy (No chocolate or anything that can melt) – Pens – Puzzles – Sodoku – Small Books – Beef Jerky – Granola Bars – Canned Chips – Peanuts – NO POPCORN
OPERATION SHOEBOX Operation Shoebox is dedicated to our overseas troops fighting terrorism. Most collected donations are shipped to war zones, with over a million care packages already delivered, and new requests for support received almost every day. Operation Shoebox is a year-round project. Please save your personal soaps and items from motels as you travel. When I get a grocery bag full, I take them to the Belleview Center for Operation Shoebox. The SOC sewing/quilting group helps to make ditty bags they need as well. These bags are filled at the Center and sent to our overseas troops. Photos of troops thanking us and holding up the full ditty bags have been received but will not show up well in our printed Newsletter. Suggested items are the same as above, but can also include cell phones, feminine hygiene products, batteries, coffee, tea mixes, writing paper and envelopes, ink cartridges and soda can tabs. Give these items to Rosemary Carson or Joann Barber. Thanks!
Recently many of us attended the Shriner Rodeo here in Ocala at the Livestock Pavilion . Here we feature SOCers Gloria Paige and Mo Osborne. I discovered that, growing up, Gloria’s father William H. Craft sponsored the Shrine Circus in Texas, as he was Potentate of the Alzafar Shrine in San Antonio. And Mo rode the circuit rodeo in New Jersey, Kissimmee, Madison Square Garden and Connecticut – among others, I am sure – from age 19 to 28!!! Who knew??? So who knows which SOCer I will feature next, and where that will take me as I explore all the Ocala area has to offer. Many of these trips are organized by SOCer Lee Justice, among others, so hop on board!

SPECIAL DAYS IN SEPTEMBER 2015
WORLD SMILE DAY is the first Friday in October, making it this year October 2. It celebrates the ever popular yellow smiley. Harvey
Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. The State Mutual Life Assurance Company hired Harvey as a free lance artist to create a smiley face for use in improving company morale. It's popularity grew slowly and then, in the
1970's, it exploded. The smiley face became so popular, that the U.S. Post Office issued a stamp with it. A proclamation of this day was made by the U.S. Congress. The first World Smiley Day celebration was in 1999. The intent of this day is to do an act of kindness, or help one person to smile. Why not do both?!
is the second Monday in October. This
year it is on the 12th. Christopher Columbus did not land on the U.S. mainland. He landed on an island in the Caribbean, but he did discover the existence of the New World for Europeans, who until then, believed the world was flat and ended somewhere in the Atlantic. The focus of this day now is more upon discovery of the "New World" and less upon Columbus. It is sometimes referred to as "Discoverer's Day".
INTERNATIONAL SKEPTICS DAY is theperfect day for a person who questions ordoubts facts and theories. Perhaps the earthisn't really round!? Maybe the sky isn't truelyblue!? A skeptic does not accept the "given."If you are inclined to doubt things that yousee or hear, then this day is for you. It seemsthat a real skeptic created this day. They did so by first creating doubt about the date on which to celebrate. Three dates given are: January 13, October 13, and the first Friday the 13th of the year. While Friday the 13th sounds intriguing, thereis doubt.......… so, go ahead - celebrate skeptics and skeptical behavior on all three dates!
BABBLING DAY is celebrated on October 21. Blatherskites, mark this day on your calendar! This isn't a day toremain silent. It's a day to celebrate those with a glib tongue. You know them when you hear them. They're talking
gibberish. They never stop talking. They babble onand on. They can turn a simple sentence into an endless dissertation. Tell everyone you know aboutthis special day. (BTW: In case you didn't know, a "Blatherskite " is a person who babbles.) There is an occasional reference to this as a "National" day. Can you imagine our illustrious political leaders debating and babbling endlessly about making this a National day!? (I can).

From Nancy and Erik Hoiass
Hello, SOC members and friends... we are so happy that many of you are willing to call us when you know someone is taken to hospital, to rehab, etc. It helps make our job a bit easier... it can keep us hopping and we need all the help we can get... Here are a few updates: 1) CARLENE ANDREAU: Hospitalized last Sunday, 9/12/15. She is in Monroe Hospital... Dx is Pneumonia. Brock is her son, very nice man who thanked us for calling. Room number is 595, bed 1. 2) DENNIS EDWARDS: In W. Marion Hosp. and has been there since 9/10/15. This is his second bout with a colon problem. Not quite ready for visitors but appreciates cards and calls. 3) FRANK ROSS: He had more heart surgery and has been able to reduce some medications. He is now at home.. time will only tell how he adjusts and if he needs more surgery. 4) DAVE YOGERST: Have been in touch with him at Hawthorne Village. He likes having his meals fixed for him but desires to be back in SOC. He misses all his friends. Looking forward to any company, calls. 5) CAROL FREEMAN: will be in hospital for an unspecified time. His wife, Mary, will be staying with Liz (believe they are from Indiana) for a period of time... up North as plans are being made for Carol to go to a rehab for a period of time. Carol is slowly getting better and I was told "he's on the road to recovery". Alzheimers is unpredictable.. Thank all of you for your kindnesses, thoughts and prayers for these precious ones. We know that all that you do for them is blessed. nancy & erik hoiaas 352-509-7034
