Congratulations Archbishop Nelson Perez

The 1.3 million parishioners of the Roman Catholic

Archdiocese of Philadelphia have a new spiritual leader.

Nelson Perez, 58, who spent most of his early pastoral career in the Philadelphia area, assumed the post of archbishop in a ceremony Tuesday, February 18, 2020

at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.

Perez, the former bishop of Cleveland, is the first Hispanic archbishop to lead the five-county Philadelphia archdiocese. He is the 14th Roman Catholic bishop and 10th archbishop

of Philadelphia.

He succeeds Archbishop Charles Chaput, who stepped down after turning 75 last year, the traditional retirement age

for Catholic bishops.

The Mass of Installation followed a procession of hundreds of cardinals, bishops, priests, deacons and seminarians to

the city's cathedral church.

Perez attended the diocesan seminary in Philadelphia in the 1980s and served in a number of Philadelphia parishes before being named as an auxiliary bishop in Rockville Centre, New York, and then bishop of Cleveland in 2017.

Hands Of Grace An innovative program for the deaf and hard-of-hearing There are roughly 5.4 million deaf or hard-of-hearing Catho-lics in the United States. With English as their second lan-guage, many of these Catholics are left searching for scarce resources, often not finding what they need. Hands of Grace: The Catholic Sacraments in American Sign Language is an innovative program that features video presentations by Father Séan Loomis teaching in ASL, as well as a workbook that is specifically designed with a visual emphasis to provide a better, dynamic learning experience for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Through 7-sessions, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the sacraments and the Catholic Faith as they:

Learn the story behind the sacraments.

Discover the Church’s teachings about the sacraments.

Live out the abundant grace given to us in the

sacraments.

This Program is Available to Purchase on DVD at Ascension Publishing

The First Week of Lent

It is wonderful to see the early weeks of Lent as a catechism

for those who are on a journey toward Baptism at the Easter

Vigil. Each liturgy offers a new "lesson in the faith" for these

new believers. Viewed this way, Lent can be a journey of

renewal in faith for us all. We listen, with the hearts of chil-

dren, learning old lessons, as though for the first time. And

each day, we pray these special prayers that simply help

us keep turning to God for the graces we need for the day.

Throughout the day, we find moments, perhaps "in the

background" while we are doing other things, that help us

remember what we are asking for. Our desire grows as we

make changes to our daily patterns. As we make sacrifices,

in order to experience freedom from self-directed needs, we

also experience a freedom for other-directed love and

generosity.
