  • Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

The Blessing of Candles and the Procession

The celebrant: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. R. Amen. Introduction of the celebration: Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), forty days have passed since we celebrated the joyful feast of the Nativity of the Lord. Today is the blessed day when Jesus was presented in the Temple by Mary and Joseph. Outwardly he was fulfilling the Law, but in relation he was coming to meet his believing people. Prompted by the Holy Spirit, Simeon and Anna came to the Temple. Enlightened by the same Spirit,

they recognized the Lord and confessed him with exultation. So let us also, gathered together by the Holy Spirit, proceed to the house of God to encounter Christ. There we shall find him and recognize him in the break-ing of the bread, until he comes again, revealed in glory. After the address the Priest blesses the can-dles, saying, with hands extended: Let us pray O God, source and origin of all light, who on this day showed to the just man Simeon the Light for revelation to the Gentiles, we humbly ask that, in answer to your people's pray-ers, you may be pleased to sanc-tify with your blessing + these candles, which we are eager to carry in praise of your name, so that, treading the path of vir-

tue, we may reach that light which never fails. Through Christ our Lord . Amen.

    LITURGY CORNER

Dear brothers and sisters, we hear in the Gospel of the people who hear the teachings of Jesus with great astonish-ment. Jesus shows his terrible power and authority over the unclean spirits, surprising the people to the point that for them this is something new, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? This man has the authority to command even unclean spirits and they obey him.” Jesus teaches with authority very different from that of the Pharisees. The authority of Jesus is given by God the Father. Why are peo-ple surprised by his authority? Because Jesus, the second person of the Holy Trinity, is the Creator of heaven and earth. The Holy Trinity with his Word created all things. Jesus is the same authority, the Word of God made flesh. His very words testify to this. In other passages of the Gospels we hear how Jesus remembers what was taught

in the old law, through Moses, now Jesus says, “but now I say...” Our blessed Lord puts himself as the au-thority because he is God himself. Jesus continues to teach all of us with

his authority. He teach-es us especially through Holy Mass. The Sec-ond Vatican Council says, “When the sacred writing is read in the Church, it is Christ himself who teaches us.” (Lumen Gentium 7) He also speaks to us through the Church in the person of the Pope and the bishops; as

long as they teach the same sound doc-trine of the Catholic Church. Before Jesus’ ascension into heaven, he gave to the apostles, the first bishops, the command to teach with his same au-thority, and in his name, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and

the Holy Spir-it, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Mt 28: 18-20) Let us ask ourselves, how do we re-spond to the teaching of Jesus today? Do we receive his teaching with aston-ishment? Are we faithful in everything to Jesus? Let us not be tempted to pay more attention to those who want to speak in the Jesus’ name without au-thority. Let us be careful to hear espe-cially those politicians who, instead of being faithful to the teachings of our blessed Lord and his Church, confuse people by distorting the message of the Gospel. God forbid this. May we all in the pastorate be faithful to be our great Teacher who teaches us with authority, yesterday, today and forever.
