Readings for the Week

Page 3: Sacred Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Fatima, Saint Rita Pastorate of … · 2020. 9. 27. · Lectio divina is a method for praying with the Scriptures. As one reads and invites the Word

Dear friends, a few days ago our Arch-bishop conveyed a virtual meeting with all the priests of the Archdiocese of Baltimore to listen to their recom-mendations, ideas to better respond to those parishioners who gradually are coming back to Holy Mass after the pandemic. Among the many ideas and recommendations, a very important one emerged, which is, a revival and reaffirmation of our awareness of what the Eucharist means in the life of each of us and our response to so great a Sacrament as followers of Christ. The time of the pandemic has been and continues to be a challenge for many, however, this time has led us to appre-ciate more in depth the sacrament of the Eucharist. We all have realized somehow how much we needed our Lord in the Eucharistic. We have wit-nessing all over the world people ask-ing to their pastors to return the cele-bration of the Mass. In countries such as Argentina, and parts of Europe peo-ple have been attending Mass from their home’s balconies and roof. Oth-

ers sent messages to their local bishops to return the celebration of the Mass soon. The experience tells us that, we do not appreciate a gift until it is missed. Our Blessed Lord says, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:5) it is true Jesus, without you we can do nothing! Archbishop Lori then agreed of the importance of Eucharistic catechesis as a mean to strengthen the faith in fami-lies in the future. May all of us see with eyes of faith all these events that we have to go through, placing our faith in God and always trusting in his wise providence, who disposes everything for his glory and our spiritual good. Last Sunday a group of children from the pastorate received their first com-munion. What a Grace! This Sunday a second group will also receive their first communion. What a grace for the whole pastorate, for their families and for the children themselves who with great joy and devotion will receive our

Blessed Lord for the first time. May we always have that hunger for the Eucharistic Lord so that, just as a deer seeks water to satisfy itself, so we too seek Jesus always to satisfy our needs. On Tuesday September 29th we cele-brate the solemnity of SS Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels, may we honor them by praying and asking them to defend, heal and bring our pe-titions to God. For those who would like to start Lec-tio divina please, check bellow an ex-planation about it. Next week will con-tinue the second part.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

LITURGY CORNER

Lectio divina is a form of meditation rooted in liturgical celebra-tion that dates back to early monastic commu-nities. It was a method practiced by monks in their dai-ly en-counter with Scripture, both as they prepared for the Eucharist and as they prayed the Liturgy of the Hours. Its use continued in the Middle Ages in religious orders, such as the Benedic-tines and Carmelites, that not only practiced lectio divina daily but passed this treasure from the past on to the next generations. The practice of lectio divina is resurfacing today as a won-derful way to meditate on God’s

Word. What Does the Latin Name Mean? The Latin phrase “lectio divina” may be translated as “divine reading.” Lectio divina is a method for praying with the Scriptures. As one reads and invites the Word to become a trans-forming lens that brings the events of daily living into focus, one can come to live more deeply and find the pres-ence of God more readily in the events of each day. The method of lectio divina follows four steps: lectio (reading), meditatio (meditation), con-templatio (contemplation), and oratio (prayer). “Lectio,” or “reading,” is the first step in the prayer process. The early monks understood that the fruitfulness of a monk’s prayer depends upon the sim-plicity, reverence, and openness to the Spirit with which the “reader” ap-proaches the Word of God. The goal of this reading is not to rush through sev-eral chapters of Scripture. The reader, rather than trying to take in large sec-tions of Scripture, adopts a reflective

stance towards a short Scripture pas-sage, pausing on a single word or phrase that resonates with the mind and

heart. (taken from the USCCB ac-cessed on September 27, 2020, https://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/how-we-teach/catechesis/catechetical-sunday/word-of-god/upload/lectio-divina.pdf ) will continue in the next week bulletin.

Doctrina Semanal
