Letter from the Pastor Dear Parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish, The second reading for this Sunday’s Mass is from the Letter to the Hebrews.

In the days when Christ Jesus was in the flesh, He offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of his reverence. Son though He was, He learned obedience from what He suffered; and when He was made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him. (Heb 5:1-9).

Jesus offers “prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears” in the garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper and so enters into His Passion, Death and ultimate Resurrection. There are only a few references to Jesus crying or weeping in the Gospels: He weeps at the death of Lazarus his friend, and He weeps over the city of Jerusalem for its rejection of Him as the Messiah, and He sheds tears in the garden of Gethsema-ne. The Lord’s reaction to His coming suffering and death is to offer prayers, to ask His heavenly Father for deliverance, and He does so with loud cries and the shedding of tears. Who of us cannot identify with these human emotions? Who of us have not had to face some very tragic and devastating events in our life, i.e., the unexpected death of someone close to us, a spouse, a child, a good and dear friend; the diagnosis of a terminal illness or chronic disease? Just as the Lord cried out to the Father so too we must “offer prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears” to God. Because the scripture says that “He was heard because of his reverence” and therefore we can trust our prayers and cries will also be heard. Jesus is praying because His coming Passion. He is praying that if it is possible, this suffering “chalice” might pass Him by but if not “Thy will be done.” His loud cries and tears are the result of the consequence of all the sins of each and every single person who has lived in the past, in the present and in the future. All suffering of the innocent, all the torture, all the oppression, all the hatred, everything that our fallen and sin-ful human nature have inflicted on others and ourselves, Jesus experiences in the garden of Gethsemane. The scripture says that “the One who was able to save Him from death” hears the prayers of His Son but not at this time. Nor does He save Him from His death on the Cross. The Father saves the Son by raising Him from the dead on Easter Sunday morning. The Resurrection is the ultimate answer to all our prayers and supplications, to our loud cries and tears. Let us unite our own personal sufferings with those of Jesus Christ so that we might find healing and consolation, and ultimate salvation in the glory of the Resurrection. In Christ, Fr. Velásquez

Mensaje del Párroco Queridos Feligreses de la Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón, La segunda lectura de la misa de este domingo es de la Carta a los Hebreos.

En los días en que Cristo Jesús estaba en la carne, ofreció oraciones y súplicas con gran clamor y lágrimas a Aquel que podía salvarlo de la muerte, y fue escuchado por su reverencia. Aunque era Hijo, aprendió la obediencia por lo que sufrió; y cuando fue perfeccionado, se convirtió en la fuen-te de salvación eterna para todos los que le obedecen. (Hebreos 5: 1-9).

Jesús ofrece “oraciones y súplicas con fuertes gritos y lágrimas” en el huerto de Getsemaní después de la Última Cena y así entra en Su Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección final. Hay solo unas pocas referencias a Jesús llorando o llorando en los Evangelios: llora por la muerte de Lázaro, su amigo, y llora por la ciu-dad de Jerusalén por su rechazo de Él como el Mesías, y derrama lágrimas en el jardín de Getsemaní. La reacción del Señor ante Su sufrimiento y muerte venideros es ofrecer oraciones, pedirle liberación a Su Padre celestial, y lo hace con grandes gritos y lágrimas. ¿Quién de nosotros no puede identificarse con estas emociones humanas? Quiénes de nosotros no hemos tenido que enfrentar algunos eventos muy trágicos y devastadores en nuestra vida, es decir, la muerte inesperada de alguien cercano a nosotros, un cónyuge, un hijo, un buen y querido amigo; el diag-nóstico de una enfermedad terminal o crónica? Así como el Señor clamó al Padre, también nosotros debemos "ofrecer oraciones y súplicas con gran clamor y lágrimas" a Dios. Porque la escritura dice que “fue escuchado por su reverencia” y, por lo tanto, podemos confiar en que nuestras oraciones y gritos también serán escuchados. Jesús está orando por Su Pasión venidera. Él está orando para que, si es posible, este “cáliz” sufrien-te pueda pasar por alto, pero si no, “hágase tu voluntad”. Sus fuertes llantos y lágrimas son el resultado de la consecuencia de todos los pecados de todas y cada una de las personas que han vivido en el pasa-do, en el presente y en el futuro. Todo el sufrimiento de los inocentes, toda la tortura, toda la opresión, todo el odio, todo lo que nuestra naturaleza humana caída y pecadora ha infligido a los demás y a noso-tros mismos, Jesús lo experimenta en el huerto de Getsemaní. La escritura dice que "Aquel que pudo salvarlo de la muerte" escucha las oraciones de Su Hijo, pero no en este momento. Tampoco lo salva de Su muerte en la Cruz. El Padre salva al Hijo resucitándolo de entre los muertos el domingo de Pascua por la mañana. La resurrección es la respuesta definitiva a to-das nuestras oraciones y súplicas, a nuestros fuertes llantos y lágrimas. Unamos nuestros propios sufri-mientos personales con los de Jesucristo para que podamos encontrar la curación y el consuelo, y la salvación final en la gloria de la Resurrección. En Cristo, P. Confirmation Program News The preparation classes for young adults, ages 13 through 16 began on January 10th by Zoom and on January 31st we moved to “in person” classes. Due to the new Mass schedule our class began at 10 a.m. the candidates were dismissed at 11:15 a.m. and we participated in the 11:30 a.m. Mass. The attendance for that Mass was great, people were standing against the wall and outside the Church building, it was awesome to see everyone!! Because of the number of people participating at the 11:30 a.m. Mass, and the safety of everyone we have started attending the 8 a.m. Mass followed by class. We want to thank the 10:30 mass attendees, now known as the 11:30 a.m. Mass, and thank the 8 a.m. Mass attendees for their welcome. The program follows the Nogales Public School calendar therefore whenever there is a long weekend at the public schools the candi-dates will also have the weekend off. The program will go all through the month of June, the second-year candidates will receive the sacrament on the third or fourth week of June. Again, we thank you for your welcome and ask for your prayers for the suc-cess of the program.

Las clases de preparación para adultos jóvenes, de 13 a 16 años, comenzaron el 10 de enero por Zoom y el 31 de enero pasa-mos a clases “presenciales”. Debido al nuevo horario de Misas, nuestra clase comenzaba a las 10:00 a.m., los candidatos salían a las 11:15 am y par-ticipábamos en la misa de las 11:30 am. La asistencia a esa Misa fue excelente, la gente estaba de pie contra la pared y fuera de la Iglesia. ¡¡Fue increíble verlos a todos!! Debido a la cantidad de per-sonas que participaron en la Misa de las 11:30 a.m. y la seguridad de todos, hemos comenzado a asistir a la Misa de 8:00 a.m. se-guida por la clase. Queremos agradecer a los asistentes de la Misa de las 10:30 a.m., ahora conocida como la Misa de las 11:30 a.m., y agradecer a los asistentes a la Misa de 8:00 a.m. por su bienvenida. El programa sigue el calendario de las Escuelas Públicas de Nogales, por lo tanto, siempre que haya un fin de semana largo en las es-cuelas públicas, los candidatos también tendrán el fin de semana libre. El programa se extenderá durante todo el mes de junio y los candidatos de segundo año recibirán el sacramento en la tercera o cuarta semana de junio. Easter Flowers Donation The light at the end of the tunnel allows us to see the end of Lent as we look forward to the greatest celebration of our faith, the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The Easter Flower envelope may not be placed on the pews due to the COVID19 restrictions but the second collection on March 28th will be designated for “Easter Flowers”.
