From the Pastor & Liturgy
FROM THE PASTOR PENTEFEST THANKS—Pentefest was a great suc-cess last Sunday; lots of people came, including new parishioners and some people who were interested in joining our parish. Thanks to all the parishioners who shared food from their country of origin; it was great tasting food from around the world. Kids had a great time playing a variety of games, and there was a lot of fun in the Bingo tent. Thanks to everyone who helped with preparation and set up, cooking hamburgers and hot dogs, painting faces, conducting the cakewalk, clean up, and a variety of other tasks. Pentefest cele-brated our diversity and showcased the time and talent of many parishioners. I also want to thank everyone who served during our Pentecost Masses. I want to give a special shout out to the Sacred Heart Chorale and our Children’s Choir who sang and all the children who led the recessional at the 11 AM Mass . PRAYERS FOR THE NEWLY ORDAINED—Please pray for Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg who was ordained on May 31 as a bishop to serve as an auxiliary bishop in our archdiocese. Also please remember in your prayers the four priests who were ordained on June 3—Fathers Chad Green, Chris Hoiland, Jeffrey Moore, and Colin Parrish—and the parishes they will serve. Also please pray that young people in our parish will continue to discern how Jesus is inviting them to serve, perhaps even as priests, lay ecclesial ministers, or member of communities of consecrated life. Let us continue to work together to build up the King-dom of God here at Sacred Heart.
LAST SCHOOL MASS ON THURSAY The final Mass for this school year will be on Thurs-day, June 15, at 9 AM. After the Mass, the school will recognize staff who are leaving as well as the 7th Grad-ers who will become school leaders. Please come and pray with our parish school community as we give thanks for another blessed year.
FLOWER DONATIONS Flowers were donated recently in memory of Peggy Brown and Tom Miller by their families. If you would like to donate flowers, please contact the Parish Office.
ASSISTING WITH EMERGENCIES If someone is ill or needs assistance during Mass, those located near the person who is ill should assist as need-ed. Either an Usher or a Staff Person will come to assist as well. Please let the Usher or Staff Person know what has been done up to that point and assist the person as needed.
RECOGNITION AND BLESSING OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES
It is the time of year for graduations, and our parish will recognize parishioners who are graduating from High School at the 11 AM Mass on Sunday, June 11; the gradu-ates will also receive a special blessing. Please pray for these parishioners as they graduate from High School. We will also recognize Danielle Peretti who will receive the Sacred Heart School Distinguished Alumni Award. Danielle is graduating from Kennedy High School and will attend Gonzaga in the fall. She will receive a scholarship to help with her books for college.
SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST NEXT SUNDAY
The solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ “began in a quiet Belgian convent in the thirteenth century, with the vision of a holy nun, St. Juliana. In her vision, she saw the moon, full made bright. It was glorious, except that one part of its disk was in shadow. The meaning of the vision was then revealed to her: the moon represented the liturgical year, the shadow a missing feast in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. Juliana spoke to her confessor about what she had seen. Amazingly, within thirty-five years, Pope Urban IV had established the Feast of Corpus Chris-ti, the Body of Christ, in the Church’s universal calendar. Hundreds of years later, in 1849, Pope Pius IX added the Feast of the Precious Blood celebrated on July 1. Follow-ing the Second Vatican Council, the two liturgies became one solemnity in honor of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Of course, we already had a day honoring the Eucharist: the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Support on Ho-ly Thursday, which even includes a procession with the Blessed Sacrament. But the purpose and the mood of the two processions are strikingly different. On Holy Thurs-day, we walk with Jesus to the Mount of Olives, to keep watch with him on the night of his betrayal. The sacrament is carried in the ciborium, covered with the humeral veil: and Christ’s glory, too, is veiled as he undergoes his Pas-sion. On Corpus Christi, we walk in the afterglow of East-er Time, in company with the Risen Lord. This time, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a monstrance: the Lord’s glory is not hidden, but visible to all. Corpus Christi is one of the most Catholic of days, an ex-pression of our faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. And yet, this celebration is also out-ward looking, carrying the liturgy out of the church and into the streets. We come together in all our diversity, and we celebrate our unity.” (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 231) Our parish will celebrate this great solemnity with a Eu-charistic Procession around the parish grounds after the 11 AM Mass next Sunday, June 18. If you plan on attending a different Mass next weekend, come and join the Eucha-ristic Procession at noon.
