Prayer for Vocations

In an effort to foster a culture of vocations in our parish, we will have a time of prayer for vocations after the Masses this weekend. Members of the par-ish are always invited to remain in the church following Mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be made to use time after Mass for parishioners to

focus their prayer on vocations. Following the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for personal reflection. We ask all to observe silence while exiting church.

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, our needs are great and our people hunger to hear the Gospel proclaimed in word, deed and sacrament.

Send the power of your Holy Spirit to

encourage men and women to open their hearts to hear Your call and to joyfully serve

in the Diocese of Davenport as priests, deacons, religious and lay ministers.

May those who minister now be filled with Your Spirit of courage and love. May they persevere in their call to serve Your people.

Grant that many will be inspired by their witness and love to answer Your call.

Faithful Citizenship Campaign Catholics Care. Catholics

Vote. Form your conscience. In their statement on Forming Con-

MOMS Group to Begin September 24th

A Ministry of Mothers Shar-ing (MOMS) group will meet for 8 weeks on Mon-day evenings from 6 – 8 p.m. in McCann Center be-ginning September 24th. MOMS is for mothers of all

ages. During the sessions mothers share readings from a journal, pray together and discuss issues af-fecting their lives. It is an opportunity to develop self-esteem and enhance relationship skills in the com-pany of other mothers. Participants develop a greater awareness of their own spirituality as mothers and affirm one another in the special ministry of mother-ing. The registration fee is $20 and includes the book MOMS-A PERSONAL JOURNAL by Sister Paula Hagen. Childcare will be available at McCann Center for a minimum fee. Registration forms are available on the parish website www.shcnewton.com or in the Gathering Space and in McCann Center. For more information, call Tammy Norcross, pastoral minister, at 792-2050.

A Music Director’s Perspective To those members of Sacred Heart’s congre-gation who have participated fully and actively in the liturgies of the Catholic Church for the past 47 years, take a moment to be pleased and satisfied. Singing the liturgy is now the normative for our congregation. This is quite an accomplishment! Your “plate was full” when asked to implement music with vernacular liturgical texts. During the past year you have ex-panded your “menu for the feast.” You responded extremely well in adapting to the revised texts and musical settings. We congratulate your efforts. Now we need for you to con-sider joining the church choir. Here are the facts: Each year approximately 20 choir members have faithfully en-hanced the liturgy for the past 47 years. The median age of this group is 71. WOW! And GRACIAS! THANK YOU! We need new blood. Current mem-bers are becoming disabled due to health problems, others are leaving for the winter, and some people have relocated. In the past few months we have lost six members for these reasons, and four of them were cantors. We are asking that freshmen in high school and older consider becoming a member of liturgical choir. This demands a commitment to an hour’s practice beginning on Wednesday evening, September 5 at 7:00 p.m. And the singing at 9:00 a.m. Mass starting on Sunday, September 9, as well as Christ-mas, Easter triduum, and whatever else may find its way in to the schedule. If you feel you can be a can-tor, we would be delighted to train you. Our parish choir functions in a liturgical min-istry whose role it is to enrich and enhance the liturgy in a way that inspires and sanctifies our congregation. Anything less is a distraction. THEREFORE, if you can match pitches and have a voice that balances and blends, consider becoming a member of Sacred Heart Parish’s Adult Choir. We are as strong as our weak-est link. “YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.”

Diocesan Council of Catholic Women

DCCW dues are now due. The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women is a very important part of the diocese. The National Council of Catholic Women acts through its affiliated organizations to support, empower and educate all Catholic women in spiritual-ity, leadership and service. NCCW programs respond with Gospel values to the needs of the Church and society in the modern world. There is a pious tradi-tion in the diocese that every Catholic woman is a member of the DCCW, and is asked to pay the an-nual dues of $2.

September 2, 2012 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dt 4:1–2, 6–8 / Jas 1:17–18, 21b–22, 27 / Mk 7:1–8, 14–15, 21–23

Three-day holiday weekends fill me with joy and dread. Joy, because I get an extra day off of regular work. Dread, because I want to fill all three days with home work, and I’ll never get everything done. This is especially ironic on Labor Day weekend, when we’re encouraged to rest from our labors and recognize the great value of work. It’s interesting that this weekend’s second reading emphasizes the importance of putting our faith in action—putting it “to work,” in a sense. The first work was done by God, as the au-thor states: “Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you.” At our baptism, the seed of the Word was planted in us by the Lord and nourished by our parents and godparents. But as mature adults, the responsibility to carry that Word into action is ours. The author stresses, “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” The au-thor also describes pure religion as caring “for orphans and widows in their af-fliction,” which in our modern context means to assure that the needs of the most vulnerable are fully met. Whether it’s a long holiday weekend or a regular weekday, what work are we about? Do we put our faith into action at our workplace, in our home, in our community? Are we doers of the Word? This Labor Day might be an excellent time to reexamine our work and, if it’s not there already, move “help fulfill the needs of the most vulnerable” to the forefront.

dear Padre Can we bargain with God?

A while back I made a deal with God: If he let me stay healthy until my elderly mother died, he could do whatever he wanted with me after she was gone. She’s still healthy, but now I’m sick and can no longer care for her. I feel so be-

trayed. I need God more than ever, but I just don’t trust him anymore. Can you help me get over this?

Annette Dear Annette, I hear my own fears in your anguished words, and I understand your frustration and worry about who will care for your mother. “Be still and know that I am God!” Those words are from Psalm 46, a prayer that quotes God’s fundamen-tal promise: “I am with you.” This promise is a gift of his whole person. It requires of us—and this scares me for myself—the gift in return of life and person, body and soul.

But we would rather bargain with God: I’ll do this and never do that, and you will help me get my children through school or keep me healthy to care for my ag-ing mother. But God doesn’t bargain, and he didn’t break a promise to you. You proposed a deal, but God didn’t agree to

it. Therefore, he hasn’t betrayed your trust. God will send you a word or sign to let you know he is indeed with you. I’ll pray for you and your mother, and I ask that you do the same for me.
