SCA Afternoon Social @ Tequila Museo Mayahuel Draws a CrowdFolks turned out in strong numbers for the SCA Afternoon Social gathering Friday, May 29, 2015. The artsy ambiance at Tequila Museo Mayahuel in downtown Sacramento set a warm tone enjoyed by all. Members and guests were treated to a quality Tequila Tasting Bar, some very tasty apps, and a very welcoming and friendly vibe. Thanks to Tequila sponsors: Artland Construction; Emergency Restoration & Cleaning; Hal-deman Construction; Lawton Construction; Regas Group Environmental Consultants; and PW Stephens Environmental.

2015 SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASpBarrish Pelham & Associates, Inc.

Please join me and imagine if you will.. it’s an almost sticky hot after-noon at about 3:00pm and in a dress shirt, jeans, and loafers, I enter a low lit, upscale Tequila Museo Mayahuel Mexican restaurant in downtown Sacramento where roughly fifty people, most of whom I recognize, are talking, laughing, and listening to each other. As I walk through the blissfully air conditioned room saying hel-los, passing by the packed tequila tasting table and waitresses serving hors d’oeuvres, I sidle up to the bar and per Tami Umland’s recom-mendation order the bartender’s specialty drink. I receive a com-pletely refreshing and delicious watermelon margarita that is the perfect start to a great afternoon of socializing and relationship building. Now, fast forward one week...it’s another almost sticky hot afternoon but for the golf cart produced breeze cooling me off. As Cata Doughri and I round the corner towards the 18th tee box at Lincoln Hills Golf Course, where JM Environmental, this year’s Eagle Sponsor, has their booth set up, we are thrilled to see Elvis Presley, Madonna, and MC Hammer doing their thing to “U Can’t Touch This!”

Message from 2015 SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASpSummertime In The SCA

After wiping away tears from laughing so hard, we are treated to authentic carnitas tacos and home-made salsa with an ice cold bever-age. Moving on to the tee box, we got to watch Zebra Restoration, this year’s winning foursome, hammer their drives on way to yet another birdie. To top it all off, we attended the dinner and raffle and were capti-vated by the public speaking skills of celebrity MC Bob Battezzato and the young man Xander from the Muscular Dystrophy Associa-tion (MDA). As part of its annual charities work, the SCA made a donation of $2500 to the MDA to help send Xander and other youths to a Summer Camp. Not to make you jealous, but this is how I spent my last two Friday afternoons! The Sacramento Claims Associa-tion just finished two very success-ful Social events that were well attended! “ Job well done!” to the SCA Social and Golf committees. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the SCA member companies who supported the events with sponsorships, donations, and time contributions! The events would not have been successful without your support and we truly appreci-ate your membership!

Now it’s back to providing edu-cation for our membership! The rest of 2015’s calendar is filled with monthly luncheons, educa-tion seminars, and CCNC. Please join us on Thursday, July 9 for our next Business Luncheon at Lions Gate Hotel where the Department of Insurance will be presenting a 1-hour discussion on “Insurance Fraud”. More detailed information will follow in flier blasts and SCA website posts. It is my hope that at the last two Social events, you were able to meet and/or talk with an attending Board member and get to know the SCA a little better. We need your constructive feedback on any SCA event, negative and/or posi-tive, in order to make them worth the money and time invested by our members. Thank you for your time and attention and I hope to see you soon.

Seven charged with more than 100 counts of auto insurance fraudMARTINEZ, Calif. - Detectives from the California Department of Insurance, assisted by Sno-homish County Marshall’s Of-fice and federal officers, arrested seven people in California and Washington June 23, 2015 for allegedly conspiring to defraud eight insurance companies by submitting fraudulent auto insur-ance claims totaling more than $175,000.Ismael Chavez, 32, of Vallejo; Juan Carlos Chavez, 36, of Hay-ward; Jose Luis Ramos-Mercado, 37, of Martinez; Maria Ortiz, 29, of Oakland; Jose Guadalupe Ramos, 50, of Pittsburg, CA and two co-conspirators from

Washington, Joel Palestino, 27, and Carmen Vazquez, 39, both of Everett, WA are all facing more than 100 criminal counts of felony insurance fraud.According to detectives, the suspects were involved in an organized auto insurance fraud ring, submitting more than 70 fraudulent claims to multiple insurance companies for damage to vehicles that occurred prior to the vehicle being insured. The suspects allegedly used multiple aliases on the insurance claims to avoid detection by insurers. The investigation also revealed Mirage AutoCraft, owned by Jose Guadalupe Ramos, inspected the

vehicles and was also involved in the conspiracy.Contra Costa District Attorney Inspectors, Immigration and Cus-toms Enforcement agents and the National Insurance Crime Bureau assisted with the investigation. If convicted on all counts, the suspects face from 5 to 35 years in state prison. Suspects arrested in Washington are being extradited to California for prosecution. The Contra Costa District Attorney’s office is prosecuting this case. Suspects Joel Palestino (bail set at $770,000) and Carmen Vazquez (bail set at $330,000) were booked into the Snohomish

County Jail in Washington. Suspects Ismael Chavez (bail set $590,000), Jose Luis Ramos-Mercado (bail set at $270,000), Maria Ortiz ($250,000), and Jose Guadalupe Ramos (bail set at $40,000) were all booked into the Martinez Detention Facility in Martinez, CA; and Juan Carlos Chavez (bail set at $20,000) was booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Pleasanton, CA.Victim insurers included Farmers, Progressive, State Farm, Loya, Sentry, National General and IDS Property and Casualty.Indictments came after a week-long Grand Jury.

Co-conspirators allegedly submitted more than 70 false claims

Following a long fun day in the sun Friday, June 5th at Lincoln Hills Golf Course, SCA Golf Tournament participants moved the party indoors for the awards dinner banquet. There, they were treated to a brief presentation by a dynamic young man, Zander Var-gas, age 9, who is the acting California State Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The local chapter of the MDA was the recipient of a check from SCA in the amount of $2,500 as a chosen charitable beneficiary.

Still Time to Join or Renew Your SCA Membership for 2015!The 2015 Sacramento Claims Association Membership Drive is now in full swing! Annual membership do provide a significant financial support to the organization. And, a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our mem-bers,” stated SCA President Steve Moore.Overall membership and meeting attendance has been consistent and substantial. Still, the sense that there aren’t many adjusters at any given function remains pervasive. “We continue to encourage the car-rier claims people and independent adjusters participate, and to attend and become more involved,” Moore added.

“The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.” The organization has been actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, as well,

contributing to local charitable causes at every turn. There seems to be a bit of a revival of carriers supporting their claims people joining and supporting their local associa-tions, though survival does not depend on that alone. The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters. Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership.

Zander was a huge hit with the crowd. SCA President Steve Moore introduced MDA Fund-raising Coordinator, Liz Griffin, who thanked the organization, and graciously accepted the generous contribution before in-troducing Zander, who proceeded to steel the show. He spoke about how much the contribution meant to him, and explained that the money will help him and others go to Summer Camp.SCA past President Bob Bat-tezzato, played the role of MC through the remainder of the pro-ceedings, installing both a sense of pride in the organization and a light-hearted jovial spirit in the early evening festivities.
