Section 3: Chapter Activities

The purpose of this section is to provide an opportunity to describe chapter activities. Media such as photos, flyers and graphics may be included in a separate appendix, please see section 7 for more information.

Instructions: Please limit each response to 500 words (maximum). Please copy/paste responses to this document, make sure that each response is under the

correct question. Please make sure to allow enough time to review, edit and submit your Annual Report.

3A. List and describe chapter goals for 2012 - 2013 school year. For each goal:

Briefly describe the goal and whether it was achieved. How did the chapter measure if the goal was achieved? If the goal was dropped, explain why and if this goal will be achieved next year. What will you

do differently?

--------------------------- {Please copy/paste your response for question 3A} ---------------------------

Achieved Goals Create networking between students from different majors in our campus: Science is composed

of a multidisciplinary community and as a chapter we want to reflect that. This year we had students majoring in: biology, chemistry, microbiology, engineering and other science fields. All sharing their knowledge, helping each other and presenting their research. This was thanks to the strong advertisement we made in the UNIV courses, which are imparted to freshmen students in our campus. Also by mass emails, chapter facebook page, and adds in the different departments bulletin boards.

Support Scientific organizations at our campus: In our effort to promote opportunities to our members we helped other science and engineering organizations in activities to promote science. For example: with the American Chemical Society (ACS) we participated with them in this year’s relay for life. Also with the IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers) we made our first symposium of science and technology in which many students of our chapter and campus had the opportunity to present their research and compete for prices (first, second and third places).

Gave necessary tools to our member to become leaders, change agents and professional in their fields. As part of our objectives we made several activities to help our members get involved in science. For example we made a summer internship workshop to create in our members the interest in these types of activities that are of much help in our academic and professional life.

Page 12: SACNAS Chapter Annual Report - CoHemiscohemis.uprm.edu/sacnas/documentos/annualreport201…  · Web viewPlease make sure to allow enough time to review, edit and submit your Annual

Current Goals: Improve our fundraising activities to invite speakers from other colleges and provide to our

members more incentives and benefits. As a nonprofit organization we depend on the fundraising activities that we make, that is why next year we have in agenda more activities to increase our chapter’s budget. For example we want to sale cupcakes, make fundraising activities at Fuddruckers and Baskin Robbins.

Increase the number of members: After last year’s graduation our chapter is in a transition process. That is why we are committed in increasing the number of members, making different activities in which we can talk about what is SACNAS. We also promote our chapter by different kinds of advertisement campaigns. For example: We have sent emails through the university email to all campus students, facebook adds, and bulletin boards adds.

Provided support and mentorship to high school students and freshman: as our commitment to advance Latinos in science we want to make workshop activities at different schools that surround our campus to promote in the high school students and future freshman the interest in studying a profession related to STEM.

3B. Describe recruitment and membership outreach activities the chapter accomplished. Describe how you measured the success of the activities and include data collected with regards to measuring success. Also describe how these activities have impacted Native American students and/or community. If your conclusion is that they have not impacted the Native American community, consider including this in future goals (Section 3G).

--------------------------- {Please copy/paste your response for question 3B} ---------------------------

To recruit new members we took on the task of creating a brochure with relevant information of SACNAS UPRM, for example: requirements for membership, history, awards, national conference, and other. Also we participated in the freshman student week, where we had the opportunity to spread the brochures and introduce students to a video of what is SACNAS chapter and relevant photos of previous semester activities. There we spoke to all of the interested students and took their contact information to communicate them the meeting dates, and other important information. We also had the opportunity this semester to talk about SACNAS UPRM in the UNIV courses, which is a course that is a requirement to all freshman students. We also promoted our chapter with a very intense campaign sending advertisement through the university email, facebook page and also information of our chapters meeting in different science department bulletin boards. We measured activities success via contact information sheets and also by attendance sheets in our first chapter meeting. It was important that our secretary kept in contact with each one of the students who demonstrated interest in our chapter via email and facebook. All the activities were of great impact to promote SACNAS UPRM to the latino community that is present in our campus.

3C. Describe personal or professional development activities the chapter provided to members that link to chapter goals (Question 3A) or the SACNAS Chapter Policy, Section I Chapter Purpose. In your summary:

Describe each activity, the outcome, and how many attended. For each activity, how did you measure success? Will you do this activity again? If so, how will you change or improve the activity.

3I. Chapter Succession Planning: Describe the leadership training for new officers or potential new officers. How do you identify new leadership within the chapter? How many new/incoming officers underwent succession planning training? How is the advisor, staff or faculty involved? Leadership training can be defined as professional development other than officer orientation that involves topics such as communication, team-building, conflict resolution, time-management, goal-setting, inspiring and motivating others.

--------------------------- {Please copy/paste your response for question 3I} ---------------------------

Finding new students to be part of SACNAS UPRM board officers is an arduous task that begins when any board member makes the statement that the person will give up the position or cannot be an officer because he or she is graduating. The vacancy occurs, the position is announced to the chapter members, is asked to the candidate to make a proposal about their possible contributions to the chapter, their interests, ideas and work plan. Potential candidates present their proposals and the members of the chapter through a voting procedure, elect the best candidate. After the election is made, whoever is elected will take advice and direction of the previous candidate, also he/she will take the advice from the chapter advisors and mentors. The current board officers and the chapter advisor encourage and help new members to participate and become part of the new officers for next year by leadership training.
