Letter from the PresidentIt is with great pride that I write to introduce you not only to the Foundation, our Board of Trustees, and our goals - but most importantly to our Mission. The Susquehanna Foundation for the Blind was born from a vision I had, shared by a dedicated Board, to continue to enhance the lives of Americans who are blind. For more than 80 years, Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired (SABVI) has provided services to residents who are blind living in Lancaster, Lebanon and Somerset Counties, and Northeast Philadelphia. Giving SABVI clients the training, confidence and determination needed to live fulfilling lives is one of the greatest achievements I’ve had the pleasure of accomplishing. From preschool graduations to hearing of high school accomplishments, to watching our clients give back to the community through the donation of items made in various social groups organized by SABVI, the gratitude seen on clients’ faces has been the most rewarding. With this in mind, the Foundation was developed to give our great community, and those beyond, the opportunities they may not have been privy to in the past by awarding scholarships and grants to Americans who are blind, thus creating breakthrough opportunities in employment and education. Perhaps the best example of this continued cycle of service was when the Foundation awarded Ms. Rosa Mercado a partial scholarship towards her studies at Millersville University. Several years after I began working for SABVI, little Rosa was a preschool graduate from SABVI’s Abe’s Club House. To see a small child begin her learning at SABVI, and to be able to continue to serve her through her college years, is an honor that I hope you will consider sharing with me by choosing to support the Foundation and it’s Mission.

Susquehanna Post-Graduate ScholarshipThe intent of the Susquehanna Post-Graduate Scholarship is to facilitate the education of a student who is blind and who has financial need and an interest in pursuing a career in rehabilitation services for people who are blind.

The Red Rose ScholarshipThe Red Rose Scholarship is a two-year scholarship awarded to a qualified high-school student (or high-school graduate) who is legally blind and who wishes to attend a two- or four-year college. The scholarship can be renewed after two years for those who are pursuing a four-year degree.

The Gift of PhilanthropyGifts to the Susquehanna Foundation for the BlindThe Susquehanna Foundation for the Blind accepts cash gifts, pledges, and deferred gifts that fit just about any financial or estate planning strategy. We will work with donors, attorneys and financial planners to be sure that gifts accomplish exactly what the donor wishes.

Charitable gift annuities can help the Foundation advance its charitable mission while providing lifetime income for the donor.

Bequests are the most generous of all gifts and the Foundation is honored to receive them.

Donor Directed Funds are retained within the endowment as a separate and distinct fund. They allow the donor to direct the income from their gift to any mission-related use. Examples may include a scholarship to a specific institution, support of studies in a specific discipline, or even the setting of restrictions based on the residence of the awardee. These funds can be established for any gift of $25,000 or more, and can be named. Donors will receive regular reports on the performance of their fund and on the application of its earnings.

Named gifts can be established with a gift of $10,000. Similar to Donor Directed Funds, these may be directed to a specific purpose but will not be established as a separate fund within the endowment. Named gifts can be raised to the donor directed level when total giving exceeds $25,000, making these excellent tools for generating additional giving from friends and families.

Cash gifts are always welcome and they are fully tax deductible.

Planned GivingPauline W. Able SocietyThe Pauline W. Abel Society is named after one of our most honored vol-unteers, Polly Abel. Polly is a Director Emeritus of the Susquehanna As-sociation for the Blind and Vision Impaired (SABVI). Supported by her late husband Jed and their three sons, she has given her time and talents to the Mission of the agency every day of her life for more than 35 years. This remarkable commitment has been driven by her deep belief in the core values of independence and full integration of people who are blind.

We invite you to join our most honored donors by becoming a member of the Foundation’s Pauline W. Abel Society. Membership is extended to all those who notify us of having remembered the Foundation in their estate plan or who pledge a planned gift to the Foundation.
