Social Effects• By the early 1970s the area was largely derelict and the residential population of the area had fallen from 50,000 to
just 4000 schools and shops closed. • But many of the new office buildings were large and faceless
with shops and facilities inside and ‘dead’ street frontages outside.
• They drew up alternative plans for a mixed development including housing, a park managed workshops and leisure
activities. • Since then CSCB (coin street community builders) has overseen demolition of old buildings completion of the south
bank riverside walkway creation of Bernie Spain Gardens and Gabriel’s Wharf market, for mixed uses including shops,
restaurants, retail design, studios and flats.
