OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Meaningful Volunteering and What It Means To MeThe Hawaii Access to Justice Commission and the Hawaii State Bar Association are sponsoring an Essay Contest for High School students to express their thoughts about “Meaningful Volunteering and What It Means to Me.” The Essay Contest is being held to recognize exceptional volunteerism by Hawaii students and to encourage those students to share their volunteering experiences with others.

The Essay Contest is open to public and private high school students in Grades 10 through 12. Submitted essays must be 500 words or less. One essay from each of the islands of Kauai, Maui (including Lanai and Molokai), and the Big Island and three essays from the island of Oahu will be selected. There will be a $500 award for each student selected.

The awardees will be recognized at a Pro Bono Celebration event to be held at the Hawaii Supreme Court Courtroom in Honolulu on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. A travel stipend for each of the honored students and his/her parent or guardian will be provided for students traveling from the neighbor islands. The Pro Bono Celebra-tion will also recognize outstanding volunteers selected by legal service providers in Hawaii.

The deadline for the entries is 4:00 p.m. on Tues-day, September 24, 2013. For more information and to download the essay contest materials, please visit hsba.org/essaycontest.aspx .

ESSAY CONTESTMAUI MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER is currently looking for Junior Volunteer's. A Junior Volunteer is that special teenager who directly and indirectly gives a helping hand to people in the hospital. The Junior Volunteer program at MMMC encourages 14-17 year olds to serve their community by giving aid to the hospital and its patients in the nursing and allied health departments. Applica-tions are available in B100.

UPWARD BOUND AT UHMC

Are you a freshmen with an interest in pursuing a career in the science, health, technology, engineering, or math �elds? Do you want help getting to college and earning a degree? Upward Bound may be the program for you. The Upward Bound program is looking for six Maui High fresh-men to join the other 50 Maui High students in the program. The Upward Bound program provides free academic help in the form of advising and tutoring, as well as college tours and a summer program at the college. Students must maintain a 2.5 gpa in the program. Visit your counselor, Mrs. Tokishi, in B100 for more information and Upward Bound application.

RUNNING STARTDo you want to experience college and get a head start on your college degree by earning college credit while still in high school? Maui High juniors and seniors are eligible to take college courses at Maui College. The running start program allows high school students to earn both high school and college credit in 100 level or higher courses at UH Maui College. Scholarships are available for students on free or reduced lunch. See your counselor in B100 for more information.

Students from Maui High’s Arts & Communication and Robotics programs participated in the Maui Economic Development Board’s 2013 Ke Alahele Education Fund Bene�t Dinner & Auction on August 24th. The event raised $313,254 for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) educational initiatives on Maui.

O�-season wrestling practice sessions are currently being held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 2:30pm to 5:00pm. Please see Coach Vickers in the gym during these times for more information.
