Superheroes to the rescue at UptownDaniel PalmerNews staff

If you happen to see Batman and Superman walking around Uptown this weekend, don’t panic – they’re not searching for an evil supervillain. They’ll be at the busy Saanich shopping centre for the fourth annual Superhero Kids Day.

The free family event is the brainchild of Superheroes of Victoria founder Mark Ashfield, who also hosts popular photo shoots for B.C. Childrens Hospital at Uptown each August.

“The whole day is to teach kids about local heroes,” says Ashfield, a former military corporal who served five years in the Canadian Forces infantry after getting his accounting degree.

He’s spent a lifetime helping others, from the first time he organized a battle-of-the-bands competition at age 16 to raise money for repairing a church roof. Then, five years

ago, a friend who knew of Ashfield’s charming geekiness approached him about the B.C. Children’s Hospital “Be A Superhero” campaign.

The program was struggling with no one to take the reins or find a physical way to breathe life into it. It was Ashfield’s bat signal.

This weekend’s event, however, is more about creating awareness of real-life superheroes right here in Saanich. Saanich Police, firefighters, paramedics and nurses will be speaking to kids about the ways they help people in the community every day.

“You can make masks and capes at the event, but throughout the day, we’ll have professionals teaching kids that what they’re doing is what kids read about in comic books. They’re the real heroes,” Ashfield says.

The event runs 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and fea-tures superhero-themed games, a magician, bouncy castle, face painting and more.

Perhaps the best part: kids can design and wear their

own costumes.Ashfield and his willing crew of superhero volunteers

also help out charities throughout the year, from the Victo-ria Film Festival to the Victoria Scotiabank MS Walk.

“We’ve helped over three dozen charity organizations and community groups at last count,” he said.

The only fundraising event for Superheroes of Victoria is by donation photo shoot in August, of which 50 per cent of profits goes to the B.C. Children’s Hospital.

In years past, Saanich Police civilian officer Kevin Nunn has talked to kids about his feat pulling a car around the University of Victoria’s Ring Road to raise money for the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock.

By the end of the day, kids are usually inspired to become real-life superheroes, Ashfield said.

“It doesn’t matter what your skills are: if you use that to help people, that’s what makes you a superhero.”

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder

Why is heart attack the number one killer in this

country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to athero-sclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiolo-gists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy colla-gen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Welling-ton University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries.

Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.

I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications.

I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens ir-refutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies.

The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.

This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors.

As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.

Olympic champ hosts Canada Day hockey Drew McLachlanNews staff

One of the biggest names in women’s hockey, four-time gold medalist Hayley Wickenheiser, is hosting a trio of charity street hockey games on Vancouver Island this Canada Day.

Hosted by Country Grocer as part of its Islanders for Islanders summer campaign, Wickenheiser is play July 1 in the rear parking lot of the Archie Browning Sport Centre in Esquimalt from 4 to 6 p.m., as well as playing in Nanaimo and Cobble Hill.

Wickenheiser will be available for photos and autographs at the event, which will feature, along with street hockey, a barbecue and music. The event is by donation, with proceeds going to Macaulay elementary.

The game marks Wickenheiser’s first visit to the Island since 2010, when she played in a lead-up game for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games against the U.S.

“I’m really excited to come out to the Island again,” Wickenheiser said. “It’s always fun to hear the stories and just see the kids. They always remind you of the fun of hockey and why we all started playing.”

Wickenheiser began her international hockey career at the age of 15, when she was added to the

national women’s team roster as a forward for the 1994 World Championship.

Since then, she’s risen to global prominence as part of Canada’s Olympic team, which she has played for since its introduction as a medal sport in 1998, when she helped Team Canada win the first silver medal. Wickenheiser was named alternate captain for the subsequent Olympic Games, and has helped lead Team Canada to the top of the podium four times, most recently in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games where she was also chosen to be the flag bearer during the opening ceremonies.

Her dedication to the national

pastime was officially recognized in 2011, when she received the Order of Canada to commemorate her role in furthering women’s hockey around the globe.

Outside of the rink, Wickenheiser has been active in community outreach, particularly with youth. In 2007, she travelled to Rwanda alongside a team of Canadian Olympians with the athletics-based humanitarian organization Right to Play. She worked with the organization again in 2011, when she visited Ghana along with her son.

She’s also worked with youth through the organizations Spread the Net, KidSport, Classroom Champions, Clean Air Champions,

and Because I am a Girl. Her most recent project is the Wickenheiser International Female Hockey Festival, which debuted in 2010 in Burnaby.

“I think it’s a big thing to encourage kids to dream and pursue something,” Wickenheiser said.

Saanich annual report shows green advancesDaniel PalmerNews staff

A minor increase in cycling collisions and strong strides made in carbon reduction are a few of the highlights of a 2013 annual report approved by council Monday.

The report serves as an overarching document to give council a clear sense of whether or not Saanich’s 1,500 staff are meeting

municipal targets governed by the Official Community Plan.

“This is the 10th year we’ve done this and it’s simply part of the culture of how we now operate,” said Mayor Frank Leonard.

Highlights of the report include an 18 per cent reduction in Saanich’s carbon footprint

since 2007, a gain made by introducing several electric vehicles to the municipal fleet and “right-sizing” vehicles when needed, said Coun. Nichola Wade.

“We’ve also implemented heating, lighting and cooling improvements that have gone into our municipal buildings,” she said.

Leonard said the report has only “a couple of red lights” amongst mostly accomplished targets, but the accountability to improve on infrastructure such as cycling lanes, and sidewalks, as well as housing is still key.

Some advancements have been made in housing affordability, he said.

But there are still more than 1,500 people on B.C. Housing’s

affordable housing wait list in the Capital Region.

“Housing affordability shows us we need to keep working on that front as well,” he said.

Wade said the report also highlighted 61 collisions involving cyclists in Saanich last year, which was higher than the community’s anticipated collisions of 54 or less.

But she said the numbers may also indicate a positive shift to higher ridership.

“It’s tragic, but I also think that means more people are cycling. Now we have to focus on protecting and them and getting bike lanes online,” Wade said.

View the annual report at saanich.ca under the June 23 council agenda.

For the past several years, Hartland Happening, a semi-annual open house, has offered a behind-the-scenes look at the region’s award-winning, multipurpose facility. This year’s Hartland Happening welcomed visitors from 10:30 am until 2 pm on Sunday, June 22. Activities included a free shuttle to the event from Camosun College, guided tours, interactive exhibits, a giant sandbox, face painting and a monster machine area. Mr. Tube Steak was on hand to barbecue hot dogs and veggie dogs that were free to event guests. Cash and non-perishable food items were collected for local charities. Hartland receives garbage from across the region, processing more than 450 tonnes per day. “I’ve lived twenty minutes away from the landfill most of my life and I’ve never given much thought to where it ends up. Knowing that so much effort goes in to making it a safe and sustainable site makes me proud of living in the capital region,” explains a Saanich resident. The CRD thanks its community supporters, and all the businesses and volunteers that made this year’s event a success.

It’s all about the money

Very few parents would have expected last fall that their children’s school year would be over by just the second week of June.

Yet that’s the case, as negotiations between the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association and the B.C. Teachers’ have hit a stalemate, and classes won’t return likely until fall.

The two sides remain far apart on wages, benefits and classroom issues.

BCPSEA’s latest offer includes a $1,200 signing bonus for an agreement by the end of the school year, and a series of wage increases up to May 2019 that includes “economic stability dividend” amounts depending on B.C.’s economic performance.

The BCTF wants a $5,000 signing bonus followed by increases of 3.5 per cent in the first year and 1.5 per cent in each of the next three years, for a total raise of eight per cent plus compounding, which brings it closer to 12 per cent – double what any other public service union has accepted this year.

As the BCTF and some members of the public maintain, “it’s not all about money,” and in some respects, that’s true.

The BCTF also wants reduction in class sizes and changes to composition, with more special needs support.

The harsh reality is in the costs. The BCSPEA has calculated the current

teachers’ wages and benefits demands to be worth $211 million in year five. Expanded preparation time for teachers would add another $90-million plus.

And the price tag on the union’s position on class size and composition? The BCPSEA puts that at $1.67 billion – a 30-plus per cent increase on the entire B.C. annual education budget of about $5 billion.

Ultimately, it does become all about the money.

Although I’m proudly Canadian, my early memories are mixed. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, our government unfairly deprived my family of citizenship rights and exiled us to the B.C. Interior, even though we were born and raised here. But my love of nature flourished during that time in the spectacular Slocan Valley.

As a young adult, I moved to the U.S. for educational opportunities not available in Canada. Disturbed by overt racism in the American South, I eventually returned to my increasingly tolerant homeland. I preferred Canada, which to me meant Tommy Douglas and Medicare, Quebec, the National Film Board and CBC. I’ve never regretted my choice.

Canadians have strived to move beyond inequality and intolerance to create an inclusive and caring society, where education, public health, social programs and enlightened laws provide numerous opportunities. We’re not there yet, but we’ve come a long way in our relatively short history as a nation.

Surrounded by the world’s longest and most diverse coastline, our mountains, forests, prairies, rivers, lakes, valleys and skies define us and instill wonder and pride. Canada is nature. And nature is life. We know this.

Lately, the tide has been turning. Instead of protecting the increasingly precious and threatened natural systems that keep us alive and

healthy, our leaders are rushing to scar the landscape with mines, roads and pipelines to sell our resources as quickly as possible to global markets. From tar sands expansion to fracking, federal and

provincial governments are blindly proceeding with little thought about long-term consequences.

In 2007, our prime minister called climate change “perhaps the greatest threat to the future of humanity.” Now he says, “No matter what they say, no country is going to take actions that are going to deliberately destroy jobs and growth

in their country.” Yet, many actions our industries and governments are taking will hurt the ability to create jobs and keep the economy prosperous. Clean energy and educated citizens are healthier investments than an increasingly risky fossil fuel industry — and we can’t hope for abundant jobs and a thriving economy on a planet suffering the ever-worsening consequences of global warming.

Canada was once seen as a country where respect for each other and our land, air, water and biodiversity were valued. Now, some government leaders and their industry and media supporters threaten those who dare question the mad scramble for short-sighted, short-term profits at the expense of the environment, our health and the world’s climate systems, and label

us “radicals.”If it’s radical to insist on

maintaining and strengthening values that have long defined us as a nation, then we’ll wear the label proudly. We are radically Canadian! That means building on the progress we’ve made over the years to create a society based on compassion, equity and respect for the people and places we know and love.

Canada has long been known as a country that gets it right, that treats its citizens well, cares for the land that gives us so much and plays a constructive role on the world stage. But now we’re lagging in many areas, our hard-earned reputation suffering.

Enshrining the right to a healthy environment in the Constitution’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms would help get Canada back on track. More than 110 countries have constitutional environmental rights. But not Canada. It’s not just about protecting birds, bees and trees; it’s about social justice and ensuring all citizens have the right to the conditions for healthy, fruitful lives.

Do you treasure our spectacular natural landscapes, clean water and air and abundant natural resources? Do you value our commitment to fairness, enlightened social programs, education and public health? Do you believe we should do all we can to protect the things that make this country great?

Now is a good time to reflect on these questions, on where we are as a nation and where we want to be. Happy Canada Day!

Members of the Greater Victoria Police Pipe Band are in Scotland to take part in major historical events, including the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.

Police pipe for win at Scotland eventsKyle SlavinNews staff

Wearing their tartan kilts and carrying heavy cultural instru-ments, 39 members of the Greater Victoria Police Pipe Band are Scotland-bound to take part in major historical and musical events.

Colin Magee, drum sergeant for the GVPPB, says the band – made of up bagpipers and drummers who are active and retired Oak Bay, Saanich and Vic-toria police officers – is set to play at Sterling Castle tomorrow (Thursday) to mark the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Ban-nockburn.

“It was a major battle where Scottish King Robert the Bruce beat King Edward II’s army in 1314,” said Magee, who emi-grated from Glasgow to Victoria in 1966 as a teenager.

“This is a key year for Scot-land; 2014. Glasgow is hosting the Commonwealth Games this summer, in September they’re holding an indepen-dence vote, and we’re there to commemorate this original battle for independence.”

Magee, who helped establish both the City of Victoria Pipe Band and the GVPPB, says the goal of the group is “to support local polic-ing as part of the public profile, and further Scot-tish music in the com-munity.”

The band also includes civilian mem-bers, like Magee.

The group will also participate in Pipefest in Sterling, which will fea-

ture more than 1,000 musicians and Highland dancers parading through the city.

They’ll also attend the Euro-pean Pipe Band Championship at Forres, though they won’t be performing.

Saanich police spokesperson, Sgt. Steve Eassie, has been a member of the band for eight years. He said joining the GVPPB has been a great experience so far.

“My family originally came from Scotland. I saw this as an opportunity to not only follow through with my passion for music, but also sort of look into my genealogy a little bit,” said Eassie, one of the bass drum-mers in the band. Both Magee and Eassie say there’s strong connection between policing and Scottish music.

“I think a lot of it has to do with the type of music. This music tends to resonate quite well with our members, especially when we’re doing formal celebrations or other events,” Eassie said.

“The bagpipes are synony-mous with Remembrance Day, I think that’s why we gravitate towards them. ... And there’s not many people out there that I know that don’t enjoy hearing bagpipes played from time to time.”

The GVPPB has members as young as 16, who’ve made it into the band by way of the GVPPB junior program, which practises out of Spectrum Community School.

“You’ll find pipe bands in a lot of communities – Australia, New Zealand, Africa. It’s really a global activity,” Magee said. “They’re teaching youth all over the world to continue this music. This bodes well for the future of pipe bands.”

The GVPPB will arrived in Scotland on Wednesday and will return to Canada on July 2. The trip is entirely self-funded, McGee said. For more info on the Greater Victoria Police Pipe Band, visit gvppb.com.

Volunteers from Vic-toria 1994 CWG are invited to wear the teal coloured jumper and join the anniversary party at PISE on Aug. 23. It will feature the return of mascot Klee Wyck, CWG athletes from 1994 and 2014, and demos by Rugby Canada and the Victo-ria Highlanders.

Volunteers invited to Commonwealth anniversary event

Did you know?n The official mascot of the 1994 Commonwealth Games was an Orca named Klee Wyck, meaning the laughing one, which was a nickname given to Canadian painter and sculptor Emily Carr by the Ucluelet First Nation.

n Canada finished second in the medal count with 129 – 40 gold, 42 silver and 47 bronze.

n The 1994 CWG also brought Greater Victoria the Westshore Velodrome.

Low-wage workers offered free labour dispute helpDaniel PalmerNews staff

Low-income, non-unionized workers will soon have a helping hand in labour disputes, thanks to a new partnership with United Way of Greater Victoria, Together Against Poverty Society and labour unions.

The first-of-its-kind service is being offered through TAPS after the non-profit experienced a spike in vulnerable youth and new immigrants seeking support with employment standards issues.

“We’ve been unable to keep up with the demand,” said TAPS legal advocate Stephen Portman.

The project is being funded through $30,000 from United Way of Greater Victoria for the next two years, and $20,000 from the Victoria Labour Council and other unions.

“This project will help ensure that some of the most vulnerable workers in Greater Victoria who do not have the protection provided by unions, will still benefit from our support,” said Mike Eso, president of the Victoria Labour Council in a state-ment.

A pair of 15-year-old Saan-ich rugby players are happy to be playing together, and not against each other, as they suit up for Island U16 Tsunami at the Provincial Rugby Champion-ships in Vancouver this week-end.

Maeve Maguire of Reynolds secondary will scrum down in the front row as a prop. Behind her in the scrum is openside flanker Shaye Tudor of Clare-mont secondary.

“We have 25 very strong girls going to defend their champion-ship this weekend,” said coach Ryan Hall from Port Alberni. “Maeve and Shaye are excep-tional players as forwards, espe-cially considering their limited experience with the 15s version of the sport.”

In the Lower Island, the two played the free-flowing sevens format of rugby for their respec-tive high schools (set for its Olym-pic debut in 2016) though they play the traditional 15s discipline with the Castaway Wander-ers, one of two U18 girls club teams in town with Velox’s new West Shore team being the other.

“I really like play-ing with Maeve,” Tudor says. “I line up behind her in the scrum and then play off of her, and we play really well together. I’m also used to her lifting me in the lineups (with CW).”

Tudor was a former national competitor in diving and has since become a provincial level Olympic weightlifter. She’s

grateful to play the “seek and destroy” role for the Tsu-nami.

It’s been a big jump into the sport for Tudor, as this is technically still her first season of rugby. She’s more than made herself noticeable, as she’s gained a reputa-tion as a hard hit-ter who can track down anyone, using her explosive strength as a cross-over athlete.

“Having played with and against Shaye, she’s one of the strongest play-ers I know. She’s fast, a great tackler, and she’s

just fearless,” Maguire said.

Tudor will co-captain the Tsunami, thanks to her outspo-ken and upbeat nature. And the team is deep in character said Hall, with players such as Maguire taking their roles so seriously.

“Maeve is an amazing prop, there’s limited 15s play in

(Greater) Victoria so to see a South Island player in the for-ward row of Maeve’s calibre is surprising,” Hall said.

Maguire stepped in as captain for Reynolds in a few games this year. What makes Maguire a rare find at this age level is her gritty and tenacious play,

and her passion for the posi-tion.

“I don’t know where (the tenacity) comes from really, you get on the field and the adrena-line kicks in,” Maguire said. “But I’m happy to be able to use my strengths at prop, I’ve always been one of the stronger girls.”

With CW, Maguire and Tudor played 15s in the newly formed Island U18 girls league this season against the West Shore-based Velox, Comox and Cowichan.

A strong performance this weekend can earn players an invite to Team B.C. tryouts for the national championships later this summer.

CW players on the Tsunami are Sofie Kennedy (Stelly’s) and Allie Bos (Glenlyon Nor-folk School), Adrienne Graham (GNS), Camille Irvine (Clare-mont) and Halayna Roberts (Oak Bay High), with Madison Paquette (Stelly’s) of Velox.

Safety Tip:As the summer BBQ season and Canada Day celebrations kick off, it’s important to remember how deadly of a combination drinking and driving can be. Arrange for

a designated driver or use other options to get home safely.

Question of the WeekBob McHugh in his review of the Lincoln MKC reveals there is a new technology called “park out assist” which gets your vehicle out of the tight parking sport that the “park assist” shoehorned you into! Is this kind of technology in danger of diminishing a driver’s control skills?

Lincoln luxury at a non-premium priceSanta Barbara, Calif. - The MKC is the first (luxury) compact utility vehicle from Lin-coln and, while related, it’s very different from the Ford Escape. Development of both vehicles started with Ford’s global “C” platform, but other than its base 2.0 litre turbo-engine, the MKC has little else in common with its Ford counterpart. All-wheel-drive is standard (in Canada) on all three editions of the MKC and a start price just under $40,000 is also inviting compared to other luxury CUVs such as the Acura RDX ($41,390) and BMW X3 ($42,800). (A top-line Ford Escape, by the way, is listed at $35,699). The MKC is the second of four all-new product launches intended to redefine Lincoln. The first being the Lincoln MKZ last year, an all-new MKX is expected next year and a, so-far unnamed, full-sized sedan will follow. The new Lincoln styling theme includes smooth clean lines a slick shape (described as “graceful ath-leticism”) and up front, there’s a contemporary take on the traditional Lincoln split-wing grille.Another eye-catching feature of the MKC is around back, a huge wraparound lift gate includes full-width LED rear lighting assemblies. This unique one-piece hydro-formed steel door opens like a clamshell and allows complete access to the cargo area. An optional hands-free feature also allows it to open with a kick-ing motion below the rear bumper. The MKC also has a roomy feel to its interior, particu-larly for front seat occupants. A dash that slants away, towards the windshield, adds to its airy ambiance. It’s also a much quieter cabin than its stable mate, with numerous built-in sound deadening features that in-clude a noise control system that eliminates unwanted sound waves and enhances others. Available inside accent trims include brushed alumi-num or open-pore Zebrano and Santos Rosewood that

can be matched with standard, made in Scotland, Bridge of Weir “Deepsoft” leather upholstery. The premium car ex-perience actually starts as you approach the MKC with an accent welcoming lighting feature that’s automatically ac-tivated (by the key fob) when an owner is within 2.4 metres (8-ft). Our 320-kilometre-plus route took us away from the coast along the scenic Jacento Reyes Byway. This lightly trav-elled twisty two-lane road gets narrow in sections. It also presented some spectacular vistas along the way and some intimidating cliff faces and rock formations.I was impressed with the MKC’s predict-able handling characteristics through the twisty sections. It was stable, very forgiving at higher speeds and generally more agile than expected for a utility

vehicle - especially after I finally figured out how to set-up the driving modes, called Lincoln Drive Control. The normal, comfort and sport settings for the sus-pension and steering are preset (via vehicle settings on the instrument panel and customizable to a limited extent) by a driver to function with “D” and “S” transmission selections. It’s a different and somewhat complex way of providing this feature. Push-button transmission selection is another feature that I wouldn’t get excited about. I get the space-sav-ing functionality and the historic connection to Lin-coln, but still prefer a shift lever. Manual operation of the transmission’s six speeds can be done via paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The shifts, however, could be crisper and the system tends to be very pro-tective of the engine (over-revving) on downshifts. Only MKC vehicles with the new 2.3-litre twin-scroll turbo engine were available to drive at this U.S. event, which would price tag them close to $50,000 in Can-ada. An impressively smooth and quiet performer (in this application) this engine can produce 285-horse-

power compared to the base 2.0-litre’s 240-horsepow-er, which is the top engine in an Escape. As you might expect, the 2.0L engine gets better fuel economy, but the difference is minimal and both can run on regular grade fuel. All the latest driver-assist technologies are avail-able with MKC including, adaptive cruise control, a collision warning system, blind-sport alert, cross-traffic alert and park assist, with a unique new wrinkle... park-out assist. This added feature can now auton-omously steer that MKC out of that tight parallel parking spot into which it put the MKC! Lincoln may be a little late in joining the booming compact luxury utility club, but the MKC is certainly an impressively well put-together new member and it’s priced to sell.

Despite the relatively early call time, a group of almost 100 Mazda Mia-ta/MX-5 drivers/passengers gathers for the morning’s meeting. The weather is looking favourable even though the a.m. envelops the crowd with its chilliness. It’s not raining though. That’s a good sign.Tour organizer and former Trillium Miata Club president, Gary Svobo-da, talks about the day’s journey, addresses some basic housekeeping rules, makes some jokes and engag-es in witty banter with a group of excited Miata enthusiasts.Everyone is ready to hit the roads of Vermont in their tiny, drop top, two-doors. Everything from first generations Miatas, to the latest and greatest rear-wheel drive road-sters line the gravel parking lot of our home base, also known as the Stowehof Inn.Stowe, VT’s claim to fame is as a ski destination. Currently, its claim to fame is the 46 Mazdas that drove in from Ontario and are congregating for their annual tour. Each May long weekend, a group of club members look forward to the event. It’s been going for over 20 years and hasn’t disappointed. The crowd gets rowdier by the minute so go-time is just around the corner. The meeting wraps up; we branch into our respective groups and fire up the engines. As honorary members for the event, my co-pilot – aka my mother

Zsuzsanna Straub – and I get behind the wheel of our MX-5. Within moments, we’re topless. The car. Not us!Seven vehicles comprise a group, including a leader and a sweeper. We’re comfortably nestled in the bosom of the pack. Our job is to enjoy ourselves, as well as give the MX-5 a little bit of room to romp free. It’s hard not to smile on the undu-lating roads of Vermont, which are lined with trees, houses, fields and topped off with a bovine scent! Then there is what is called “The Notch.” A mountain road where emaciated limbs of indigenous trees

look like they’re reaching out and trying to touch the cars. Boulders are scattered and the path is paved around it. The intermittent obstacles would likely be the outcome of two Greek gods having a rock fight. You would have to have superhuman strength to move them. The sinuous and slender road is a hoot to drive through especially with no one in front of you. The occasional crackling on the CB radios frequently is overpowered by instructions from the leader. Like a mother duck summoning her young, we followed in order. We stuck together and took in some breathtaking scenery of New

England. Scenery aside, what was the most interesting to breathe in was the enthusiasm and energy of the Miata owners.Liz Burns has “Miatatude” stick-ered across her windshield. Miata earrings dangle from her ears as she professes her love of her emerald beauty.Another owner decided to turn his conventional doors into ones that open up not out.At breakfast, lunch and dinner, they regale each other with sto-ries of other events they’ve been on. Outbursts of laughter perk up the ears of bystanders; making them wish they were at that table reliving the memories. The cama-raderie of those young and young at heart is undisputable.Regardless of background,

profession, or preference in exterior colour, few vehicles in the world bring people together as strongly as Mazda’s MX-5.Liz was one of the first members of the Trillium Miata Club. She expect-ed to join a group of Miata owners and drive with them on weekends. Liz says she “didn’t expect to make friends for 25 years” but she did.And as the Miata/MX-5 turns 25 this year, here’s to another quarter century of promote the best that life has to offer: the bond of man-kind and machine, 167 horsepower at a time.

You need not be a Formula 1 fan to enjoy this computer-generated film about the Red Bull Ring, the location for this coming weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.It features the man from today’s Driveway cover story – four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel and Infiniti-Red Bull Racing’s young gun Daniel Ricciardo racing around the track. Driving RB10s, Daniel and Sebastian explain the track’s unique characteristics as they dual around the 4.3

km circuit. As the Red Bull racers contend with changing weather conditions, they explain the circuit’s elevation changes, the four best overtaking opportunities, the track’s nine corners and the four high-speed stretches. In certain sections of the circuit, Sebastian’s RB10 becomes transparent, showing the intricate inner details of his 2014 racecar.

French Open winner, Maria Sharapova, was driven to the glamorous Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Pre-Wimbledon Party in the Porsche 918 Spyder – the Stuttgart marque’s fastest, most powerful production car to date, and one of the lowest-emitters of CO2 of any class of car.Fresh from his drive in the Le Mans 24 Hours race, Sharapova’s chauffeur for the night was Porsche factory ‘works’ driver, Mark Webber, complete in smart chauffeur attire. The 918 Spyder has a mid-mounted 4.6-li-tre V8 race engine coupled to two electric motors with lithium-ion batteries. It is a remarkable plug-in hybrid super sports car

that can reach a top speed of 344 km/h, sprint from zero to 100km/h in 2.5 seconds, and yet at 72 g/km (70 g/km with the lightweight Weissach Package) produces so little CO2 that it is exempt from the London Congestion Charge. It has a total power output of 887 hp and holds the current lap record for a produc-tion car at the famous Nürburgring race circuit of just 6 minutes 57 seconds. Despite all that performance, its plug-in hybrid technology means a low fuel consumption of 3.0 L/100kms is possible.View a gallery of photos and full story at drivewaycanada.ca

What does Canada Day mean to you, Saanich?

Michele Janisse

“I’m proud to live in a free country with a history of good gov-ernments, medicare, and ever expanding freedoms.”

Erica Mills

“I’m glad I was born in Canada. We have a lot of freedoms that other coun-try’s don’t have. Plus we have great weather with real seasons, you get snow in the winter and heat in the summer.”

Chelsea Purych

“It’s a really nice country to be in, and there are lots of nice people here.”

Gary Linford

“I think Canada provides a system where everybody has a fair and equal chance to live a good life; where freedom is respected.”

Gerald Cunnington

“I love my country because I can mountain bike, kayak, and do it all day long everyday, all year.”

Jim Griffith

“Canada seems to be such a diverse nation ... free of all of the threats and oppression that exists in most parts of the world. I think we’re small enough to be unique and dif-ferent from the United States, even though we receive a lot of benefits from that country. and we’re well respected throughout the rest of the world, and I think that’s something to be proud of.”

The Hartland Landfill Facility will be closed on Canada Day, Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Hartland will reopen on Wednesday, July 2 from 9 am to 5 pm.

Gorge on Art returns with Gorge Canada Day Picnic

Black Press file photo

Travis PatersonNews staff

For the second straight year, Gorge on Art will run in conjunction with the 16th annual Gorge Canada Day Picnic on Tuesday, July 1.

Last year’s Gorge picnic drew an estimated 10,000 visitors to the Gorge Water-way. Construction of the Craigflower Bridge in July 2013 forced Gorge on Art to move away from its usual mid-July date. They chose to saddle up with the Gorge Picnic, and it was a success said coordinator Brenda Weatherston, Saanich’s community arts specialist at Cedar Hill Rec.

“We decided it was a nice fit last year and wanted to do it again this year. We usu-ally get about 2,000 people so it gives our artists a lot more exposure in terms of numbers.

“Bringing in the arts side of things really enriched the

cultural side of the Gorge Picnic.”

Gorge on Art has featured between 30 to 50 artists in the past, and chose about 25 artists this year.

“We’ll have sculptors and artists doing ceramics, oil painting, and more, as well as an artisan’s market with locally made foods, wood-working, children’s items, and all kinds of good stuff,” Weatherston said.

Artists draw from across Greater Victoria and as far as Cowichan Valley and the Gulf Islands.

Gorge on Art’s involve-ment also adds a third music stage, with the annual favourite Cynthia Davis Trio, who’ve been part of Gorge on Art for years.

“We have jazz and folk, it makes for a nice combina-tion,” Weatherston said.

Music this year includes Jennifer Louise Taylor with Ken Hall, the Joy of Life Choir, the Viva Mexico Folk-

lore Dancers, the B.C. Fid-dle Orchestra led by Daniel Lapp, The O’Brien Family and Lapp, Dolen, Dobres, Dave Harris, and Mike Alvi-ano.

Victoria Highlanders FC have announced a second major exhibition match.

The Highlanders will play against the North American Soccer League’s FC Edmonton on July 2 at 6 p.m.

Both matches are taking place at the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium to accommodate an increased attendance.

Tickets for the match are available online atselectyourtickets.ca or can be made over the phone by calling 250-220-7777.

Tickets for the FC Edmonton match are general admission and will be priced at $20 for adults and $10 for youth 12 and under. Group rates will be available through the Highlanders head office at 250-590-8432.

Baseball club averaging 1,457 fans per game

Greater Victoria fans love their HarbourCats and baseball.

Going into last Monday’s home game against the Bend Elks, the Victoria HarbourCats led the West Coast League in average attendance with 1,457 per game (six home games).

All WCL regular season home games so far have been weeknight games, as the team’s schedule is heavy on weekend games, and five afternoon games to come, when the schedule moves to July and August.

“We think that number can grow with the way our schedule is shaped in the last half of the sea-

son,” said general manager Jim Swanson. “We believe that with this market, with the sup-

port of the City of Victoria and the facility we play in, and with hard work and creativity in our mar-keting efforts, it’s possible for our support to reach 2,000 or more per game on average.”

The HarbourCats have 18 home games remain-ing, and the season-high crowd to date was a Tues-day, the 3,038 on opening night.

The second highest attendance in the league belongs to the Oregon-based Medford Rogues at 1,426 per game. The Kitsap BlueJackets in Washin-ton State hold the worst attendance at 426 fans per game. The H-Cats currently sit fourth in the West Division standings.

Time was, a Realtor’s job was to identify potential homes for clients then guide them through the myriad legal details surrounding the buying and selling of property.

Those roles are still there, but technology and clients’ expectations have brought changes that have re-shaped the Realtor’s career.

“The role of the Realtor has changed, especially in the last 10 or 15 years,” says Tim Ayres, president of the Victoria Real Estate Board.

He notes that while much of the Realtor’s job had been information gathering for home shoppers, the Internet now allows people to do much of that legwork themselves.

Today, a Realtor’s value is not only in how well-versed they are on the legal ins and outs of home buying and selling, but also in their mar-keting skills and ability to stay well-informed about the community in which they’re selling. Examples are trends in the marketplace, demo-graphics, schools, transportation issues, and development plans.

Fortunately, Greater Victoria is small enough that Realtors can familiarize themselves quite easily with neighbourhoods from Sooke to Sidney. But Ayres suggests Realtors often find success in focusing on a particular part of the region.

This diverse knowledge base is all the more important when working with clients from outside the region, such as those relocating with the military or RCMP, or retirees seeking the promise of mild winters.

While the Internet has changed

the Realtor’s role, it’s also dramati-cally changed the way they do busi-ness. Realtors selling a property should be savvy to today’s technol-ogy, using video, photography and floor plans to provide prospective buyers with a full picture of a prop-erty, for example.

“An online presence is key,” Ayres says. “Make sure what you’re doing (to market a property) is what peo-ple want to see.”

Homes can be viewed via iPad,

prices negotiated by text and con-tracts reviewed via smart phone.

At the same time, there’s a lot to be said for a Realtor’s ability to con-nect with clients on a personal level.

Patrick Skillings has been a Real-tor for 30 years, and believes in the time-honoured approach of one-on-one contact with clients, and of being genuinely interested in those he meets – as people, not only the means to a potential sale, he says.

While it takes work, maintaining

contact with clients in the years fol-lowing a home sale or purchase also helps keep connections active and promote word-of-mouth advertising. Skillings points out, for example, that he recently worked with a client he’d helped to buy a home almost three decades earlier.

“Clients like the fact that we com-municate on a variety of different levels, not just about a particular piece of property,” he says.

Q: HOW DO YOU BECOME A LICENSED REAL ESTATE AGENT?

HomeFinderFind a place to call home

SELLER’S TIP | Talk to your agent about how they plan to market your home

Real estate agents’ skill set ever expandingThe Real Estate Council

is B.C.’s licensing and regu-latory agency for real estate professionals.

Applicants must suc-cessfully complete the council’s education require-ments specific to careers in real estate sales, rental property management ser-vices or strata management services, offered through the University of British Columbia Real Estate Divi-sion.

As a blended learning course, students can reg-ister at any time, but the course must be completed within one year.

Those with prior real estate education or expe-rience may receive an exemption from course work.

Applicants must be at least 19 years old, although the course and examination may be completed earlier; individuals have up to one year from passing the exam to apply for licensing.

Real estate-related post-secondary programs are also available at the Uni-versity of British Columbia and the B.C. Institute of Technology.

Festival celebrates Indian art and culture

Victoria’s Hindu Temple throws open its doors this week-end for the fifth Culture and Arts Festival of India and everyone is invited.

Cultural co-ordinator and tem-ple secretary Sri Ganti says they hope to welcome hundreds of people from across Greater Vic-toria to share in Indian music, movies, dance, history, food and much more.

“It’s very festive,” Ganti says. “Many people have been to India and they find it wonderful to come here and be a part of the celebration.”

Dancers will perform clas-sic, folk and Bollywood style on stage. Outside the temple, there will be tents featuring cooking demonstrations, Henna tattoo-ing, clothing and more. There is a lunch menu as well.

Ganti said the temple is home to 150 families throughout Greater Victoria and they are passionate about their heritage.

“It’s a small community, but it’s growing.”

The Culture and Arts Festival of India is June 28 and 29, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Victoria Hindu Temple on Cultra Avenue in Cen-tral Saanich.
