What’s 4-H?
A national, non-profit organization for youth
6-21.
Aimed at assisting personal development,
the 4-H program teaches skills in the areas of
public speaking, leadership, community
involvement and general livestock knowledge.
As an educational program, projects are a
means to an end in youth development, as
project work helps to develop skills such as goal
setting, record keeping and project
management.
4-H helps shape member’s attitudes, abilities
and understanding, to better enable them to
work with others. It develops confidence, pride,
loyalty and independence. Each skill,
opportunity and award is a new experience that
challenges young people to do their personal
best.
The goal of the 4-H program is Youth
Development, by providing opportunity for
knowledge enhancement, leadership skills,
citizenship training and personal development.
The Saanich 4-H Lamb Club
BAA RAM EWE!
The Saanich 4-H Lamb Club is a part of the South
Malahat District. In the past few years, the club
has grown to 20 members. Our club’s favorite
event must be the PNE where our members show
very well and get to meet up with their friends
from past 4-H camps. As a club we have attended
the PNE, Coombs Fair, Cobble Hill Fair, Saanich
Fair, Cowichan Fair, and Saltspring Fair. We have
had members go to Provincial Club Week, Rural
Urban Connections, Surviving the Challenge, Jun-
ior Camp, and even trips across Canada!
If you would like to join our club or would just like
more information, contact us through the district’s
website.

On Labour Day Monday, you have the opportunity
to feed family, friends or customers with some
choice cuts of meat, while supporting one of the
largest rural youth organizations in existence: 4-
H. The South Malahat 4-H Auction includes steers,
hogs and lambs raised by the South Malahat District
4-H members. The auction will be held September
5TH
, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. in the Beef Show Ring.
The lambs, steers and hogs will be sold by the
pound live weight. (e.g.- 1100 lb steer for $2.00 per
lb= $2200 your cost). Your purchase will be
delivered for processing at our cost. The kill charge
as set by the processing plant, transportation of the
carcass to the butcher and cutting and wrapping of
the meat is payable by you, the purchaser. You
will get to select your specific cutting instructions
to the butcher. The processing plants that the
animals will be sent to are all government certified.
With your investment in 4-H you will be getting the
best of the best in meat quality and pride.

The Saanich 4-H Auction
What is that I hear you say? You’re looking for
either a new environmentally friendly lawn mower
or perhaps a BBQ dinner for you and a group of
friends or employees? Well look no further
because I have the lamb for you! Hi my name is
Amy and this is my 6th year selling in the Saanich
4-H Auction. This year I am selling my lovely
Hampshire X Suffolk market lamb named
Chesterman. He was born and raised on my family
farm and has received top quality grain, hay (and
even top quality pasture: thanks mom and dad!)
He has lovely leg muscling and an extremely wide
and long loin. I know you will not be
disappointed! I would like to thank all of my past
buyers, everyone who helps out at the fair, my
leaders, fellow members and definitely my parents
and my brother Nigel. 4-H wouldn’t be what it is
without all of the support it gets. Thanks everyone
Amy

My name is Ben. This is my third year in 4-H
raising a fed lamb. My lamb Chocolate is a
Hampshire. He has been raised on Buckerfields
sheep text and local hay. I would like to thank my
buyer from last year, Artisan Painting Plus. Part of
the money I receive in the auction will go to paying
back my parents costs in raising the lamb, and part
will be saved for my future.

I am selling my lamb Ollie, for auction this year. He
was born to the daughter of my prize winning ewe,
Misty. He is a long and meaty Hampshire who was
born in the Saanich Pennisula. He is perfect for your
freezer, and buying him will show your support for
local farmers and local food. He is fed premium
grain from Integrity Feeds and local hay. This is my
ninth year in the lamb Club and I have been working
harder than ever with my lamb, steer and the other
members. I am also a BC 4-H Ambassador, who
works hard to promote 4-H. The money that I make
will go towards raising next year’s animals and my
future education. Thank you to Unseen Acres/ Brett
Leland and Dawne Deeley for buying my fed
projects last year.

My name is Emily and I am 10 years old. This is
my second year in 4-H. This is my lamb named
Max, in honor of my buyer of last year’s lamb,
Max from Vancouver Island Fleet Repairs. My lamb
has been lovingly raised by me at my home and
has been fed high quality Top Shelf Feeds, from
the Red Barn Market. I invite to bid on my Max
and enjoy fresh local lamb.

Hello my name is Gillian. This is my 7th year in
the Saanich 4-H Lamb Club and my 5th year
selling in the 4-H Auction at the Saanich Fair. My
goal has been to produce a top quality market
lamb on my family’s sheep farm. I have fed my
lamb 16% Top Shelf Sheep Tex and home grown
hay and pasture with no pesticides, so this lamb is
sure to be top quality. You will love the flavour
and nutrition of this 4H market lamb. Thank you
for considering my lamb for your family’s table;
you won’t be disappointed. I would like to thank
my 2010 buyer, Island Tractor, for generously
supporting my project last year.

Do you want a amazing lawn mower, a perfect pet
or that great family meal, if you are into eating
locally, then he is the one for you! Hi, my name
is Hilary and this is my beautiful purebred
Hampshire fed lamb Pickles. He has been fed top
quality Buckerfield’s 15% sheep text and local
hay. He has a deep meaty twist and a super long
loin. I’d like to thank my previous buyer,
Saanichton Christmas Tree Farm. With the money
I earn from my lamb I will put it towards paying
my parents back for the feed and put the rest
towards my future.

Wow, look at that animal! Look at this strong,
muscular animal. Come on and make a bid before
all the others do. I am Holly, I’m 15 years old and
I am entering grade ten. I’m still enjoying 4-H, and
all its knowledge and fun camps that go along
with it. This is my fed lamb project, Mocha. He
was born on March 24, 2011. Mocha’s parents
were both, lean, muscular animals as well. Mocha
is fed pasture and a good hardy amount of sheep
text and hay. The money I receive will go towards
my education and be saved in the bank. Thank
you everyone for their help and support over the
year, and thank you to my previous buyer, Aristan
Painting Plus.

Hello my name is Luke and this is my second
year in 4-H and my first year in the lamb club.
My market lamb this year is a hampshire named
Oreo. He is fed on Buckerfield’s sheep grain,
grass from my lawn and local hay. He has very
good muscling with a long back and a deep
loin. One of his other relatives was the winner
for the grand champion market lamb class at
the Saanich Fair in previous years. If you buy
my lamb you can rest easy that the meat you
are eating has had a good life and has been
well cared for. I plan on using the money that I
make to put towards my lamb project next
year. Thank you for considering my lamb.

My name is Nigel and I have been in the 4-H
Program for 10 years. This year, I was selected to
be a BC 4-H Ambassador representing the
Vancouver Island Region. I have been raising
sheep for the past 9 years and this year, I am
proud to present my fed lamb "Buddy". He is a
muscular Hampshire Cross and has been raised
on the Saanich Peninsula. He has been fed top
quality grain, local hay and fresh pasture on my
family farm. Show your support of the 4-H
Program and your local farmers by coming out to
the 4-H Auction and bidding on Buddy. I would
like to thank Biologica for purchasing my last
year's lamb.

Hello my name is Sam and this is my first year in
the Saanich Lamb club. My market lamb this year
is a Hampshire ewe named Dasha. Dasha has
excellent muscling which will be perfect for your
freezer. In addition, you would be eating locally
raised meat which contributes to healthy
communities and a healthier environment. You
would also like to know she has been raised in a
humane way and not on a factory farm. Dasha is a
ewe so she could be used for breeding instead, if
you would like to increase your flock. Dasha is fed
local hay and Buckerfied’s grain. She was born on
February 21, 2011. The money I earn from the
2011 Auction will be used to buy my next year’s
lamb. I’ll see you at the Auction!

Hello, my name is Stuart and this is my 8th year
in the Saanich 4-H Lamb Club and my 5th year
selling in the 4-H auction. I have enjoyed raising
and caring for this market lamb, preparing it just
for you. My lamb has been fed 16% Sheep-Tex
from Top Shelf Feeds as well as fresh hay from
our farm that is free from pesticides. Notice that
this lamb has exceptional muscling and will yield
lean, prime, meat cuts for your family’s table.
The proceeds from the sale of my project will go
towards future 4-H projects and my education
fund. I would like to thank my 2010 buyer, The
Red Barn Market, for their very generous support,
and to all perspective 2011 buyers.
