Twenty three girls are contesting the B Section. The A Section consists of 29 females, including top- seed WIM Anzel Laubscher, Michelle Fisher, Rabecca Selkirk, Inge Marx, Lauren and Robyn Van Niekerk, Kaylyn and Tegan Fritz, Natasha and Dantelle Joubert, Karla, Ilse and Lisa Brugman and Charne Woolf. The time control of 60 minutes per player plus 30 seconds increment per move seems to suit this kind of event with morning round starting at 10 am and afternoon round at 2 pm on Thursday and Friday. (On Saturday and Sunday the morning rounds will start at 9:30 am.) There were no upsets during Round One despite a number of games going the distance and Karla Brugman pulling off a draw against Michelle Fisher after three and a half hours of play. The Tournament Director Linsy Pistorius seems to have things well under control. Our females are motivated with many creative ideas flowing. Thank you to Coaches Ashley and Helene Visagie for bringing girls from Parkwood Primary and Perivale Primary Schools. Teacher Deidre Fortuin travelled with 7 girls all the way from Hexvallei Secondary School in De Doorns to participate in the prestigious national chess championships. Six girls from Khayelitsha are rearing to go with Coach Loyiso Mdokwe giving full support. Hearty thank you to our teachers and coaches for coming out to support our talented girls! SA Women’s Open Chess Championship 2015

The 2015 SA Women’s Open Chess Championship started with 52 females playing a Seven Round Swiss

tournament at the Lady Hamilton Hotel in Union Street, Cape Town.

Twenty – three girls are contesting the B – Section. The A – Section consists of 29 females, including top-

seed WIM Anzel Laubscher, Michelle Fisher, Rabecca Selkirk, Inge Marx, Lauren and Robyn Van

Niekerk, Kaylyn and Tegan Fritz, Natasha and Dantelle Joubert, Karla, Ilse and Lisa Brugman and Charne

Woolf.

The time – control of 60 minutes per player plus 30 seconds increment per move seems to suit this kind of

event with morning round starting at 10 am and afternoon round at 2 pm on Thursday and Friday. (On

Saturday and Sunday the morning rounds will start at 9:30 am.)

There were no upsets during Round One despite a number of games going the distance and Karla Brugman

pulling off a draw against Michelle Fisher after three and a half hours of play. The Tournament Director

Linsy Pistorius seems to have things well under control. Our females are motivated with many creative

Woman International Master Anzel Laubscher was crowned 2015 South African Women’s Open Chess

Champion at the Lady Hamilton Hotel in Cape Town today, Well done Anzel! Anzel boasts a formidable

chess career of 35 SA caps and 7 selections to the SA Olympiad Women’s Team. This is another

wonderful achievement in a long list of successes. Well done!

The runners-up were Inge Marx in second place and Michelle Fisher in third.

Sokoyi Sinoxolo, a 12 year old player from Masiphumelele Primary School in Khayelitsha has won the

Development B – Section of the SA Women’s Open Chess Championship with a score of 6/7. This girl has

phenomenal talent. She scored a perfect 7/7 at the recently held Western Cape Top Schools Championship

at the WP Sports School in Kuilsrivier. Well done Sokoyi!

In second place was the find of the 2015 SA Women’s Open, Melanie Swarts. This young woman from

Hexvallei Secondary School in De Doorns has confounded all with a sterling performance to clinch silver!

In third place was Sophangisa Vuyo on a well-deserved 5.5/7.
