From the President Dear Flute Society Members, As I write this report, our 45th Birthday looms before us. It coincidentally falls on the date of our next committee meeting, so I am looking forward to sharing a memorable evening with the best possible colleagues on that auspicious date! Reflecting on our history and our philosophy of, ‘aiming to foster and encourage enjoyment of flute playing in the broadest possible sense … forging links out into the community’, I feel we are in great shape. The Flute Society of SA Inc. was formed in July 26, 1972, at the instigation of the late David Cubbin. The meeting was held at the infamous Flinders Street School of Music, with David elected President, our patron, Alison Rosser as Secretary and Judy Cooper, Treasurer. The Society became ‘official’ in 1975. Over our lifetime we have hosted many flute ‘days’, which have incorporated guest and local artists presenting master classes, recitals and the opportunity for group playing and pedagogue discussions and analysis. These festivals began in 1973 in various guises such as: Flute Fests / Flings / Madness / Leaps and Bounds (featuring Sydney flautist … Carolyn Bounds) / and Fun Days. These events are important in providing inspiration for young flute players and continue to form a centrepiece to our planning. In 1985 a scholarship for young players (15 years and under) was established. This evolved into the Carolyn White Memorial Scholarship (named after a respected past President and teacher) in 1996 and continues to this day. It was first awarded in 1989 with Geoffrey Collins as the adjudicator and Melita White the first recipient. The David Cubbin Memorial Prize – for more experienced players – was established in 1992 and was won by Monica Fynnaart. In 1976, the Flute Society hosted the Second Australian Flute Convention. In that year, Geoffrey Collins was the winner of the Solo Flute Competition and Owen Fisenden one of the Guest Artists. Geoffrey has held the position of Principal Flute of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra since 1997 and this year Owen’s son, Neil Fisenden (formerly Principal Flute of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra) is our Guest Director for the Flute Fun Day and the Adelaide Eisteddfod. Neil Fisenden and Vernon Hill were both guest contributors to our 10th Birthday Celebrations at the Goodwood Orphanage in 1982. In 1988 the Flute Society hosted the Seventh Australian Flute Convention. One of Australia’s most notable composers, Anne Boyd, was commissioned to write Bali Moods, which was dedicated to Geoffrey Collins, who premiered it at the Convention during a concert of music for the flute by Australian composers. In 1993 the Flute Society celebrated its 21st birthday with workshops and recitals held at Marryatville High School and featuring David Cubbin, Vernon Hill, Angela Retchford and Zdenek Bruderhans. As an impressionable student new in SA, I will never forget Bruderhans’ dramatic demonstration of circular breathing to Moto Perpetuo for 5+ minutes!! ‘Celebrate 30’ and ‘40’ featured former Sydney Symphony Principal Flute, Janet Webb and Jocelyn Edey-Fazzone. Our Society is one of the strongest in Australia, with many existing only via email and / or with minimal expertise and support. Several people are integral to our continuation as a Society and many were originally on early committees and continue to work as teachers, mentors and pedagogues in South Australia. Our Patron Alison Rosser is still a prominent force in providing formidable instruction and wisdom to us all. Similarly, Elizabeth Koch AM is not only one of Australia’s most important pedagogues, but someone who is central in continuing to forge links with prominent flautists both interstate and overseas. The generosity of time and dedication to the SA Flute community from these two women is stupendous and has been a very powerful and binding role model, to those of us in their wake. South Australian Flute News was first produced and distributed in 1979. Robert Brown has been the Editor since that time, and is the beating heart of our voice and has worked with devotion to this project since its inception. Finally, with the Australian Flute Festival commencing next weekend in Brisbane, I would like to wish our SA competitors the best of luck. Jordan Paterson is a finalist in the Young Artist Competition and former SA graduates from the Elder Conservatorium and pupils of Elizabeth Koch, Andrew Baird and Anna Cooper, are both Semi-Finalists in the Open Flute Competition. From the President Dear Flute Society Members,

As I write this report, our 45th Birthday looms before us.

INFORMATION FOR COMPETITORS by Robert Brown, Convenor

We are looking forward to another exciting showcase of performances. Please arrive early enough on the day

to book in and to warm up without having to rush. If you need an accompanist ask your teacher for

assistance or visit the Accompanists’ Guild of SA website at http://accompanist.org.au/register-of-

accompanists/ to access the Register of Accompanists. Book your accompanist sooner rather than later so

you have time to rehearse and to avoid the last minute rush!

There is no printed Programme Book. The combined programme for the Flute and Woodwind Divisions is

now available to download from the Flute Society of South Australia’s website (under Eisteddfod) at

Page 3: SA Flute News - flutesocietyofsa.org · SA FLUTE NEWS Page 2 ... to book in and to warm up without having to rush. ... audience will be available during the Flute and Woodwind Divisions

Page 3 SA FLUTE NEWS

http://saflutesociety.org/?page_id=36. Please also download the General Rules of the Adelaide Eisteddfod

from the Adelaide Eisteddfod website at http://sacomment.com/aes/eisteddfod/ and read them carefully. All

competitors were sent an e-mail that asked them to look for these PDF files. A printed programme for the

audience will be available during the Flute and Woodwind Divisions for $1.

Competitors are required to use the APRA/AMCOS Copyright Declaration Form (a link is included on the

Adelaide Eisteddfod website at http://www.sacomment.com/aes.htm). A separate APRA/AMCOS Copyright

Declaration Form must be presented at the time of booking in for each section that has been entered. Please

complete 1. Performer’s Declaration, 2. Making a temporary copy for an adjudicator or examiner, and 3.

Making a temporary copy for an accompanist. To speed up booking in, could each competitor please

clearly write on a sheet of paper his/her name, the names of works being performed, and their

composers, ready to hand in to the booking in person? The second page of the APRA/AMCOS form

can be used for this purpose.

Competitors are required to bring a legible piano score copy of their own choice music for the Adjudicator –

don’t forget to bring it with you! I provide piano scores for the set pieces and Flute Music by French

Composers. Please don’t bring photocopies of these publications with you (this wastes paper)!

There will be a warm up room at both venues. Please play softly in the warm up room so the sound doesn’t

go into the performance area and keep the door closed.

For most sections, competitors will be asked to sit with the audience in the performance area just before the

section starts and will come from there to perform. You should wait for the Adjudicator to ring the bell and the

Announcer to announce the works to be presented before beginning to perform. You can begin tuning while

waiting for the Adjudicator. Take your time with tuning. Look cheerful, bow after you have finished performing

and don’t forget to acknowledge your accompanist.

Think about deportment on stage and wear clothing that is smart and comfortable, but not those old jeans

and sneakers! Don’t forget to check the height and location of the music stand and ask the Announcer to

adjust it for you if you need assistance.

On Wednesday July 26 we will be celebrating the Flute Society of South Australia’s 45th anniversary. It is a non-profit organisation which aims to foster and encourage the enjoyment of flute playing at all levels.

Flute Clubs were established in the mid 1800s in London, Birmingham and other places in Britain; some of these clubs were active until the mid 1900s. The flute was a popular instrument for gentlemen in the 1800s, Prince Albert among them. Flute Clubs began to flourish after World War I. The New York Flute Club was founded by Georges Barrère in 1920 (still active) with Georges Laurent founding the Boston Flute Players Club the next year. The Sydney Flute Club was established on July 29, 1923,

modelling their constitution on that of the Los Angeles Flute Club. Celebrated flautist John Lemmoné was the President. Flute Clubs were founded in Brisbane and Melbourne soon after this. In 1925 The Flutist magazine listed 25 Flute Clubs located in various parts of the world, and assured that ‘A warm welcome awaits you in any of the above mentioned cities if you will get in touch with these officers’.

(front row, 2nd from right, John Lemmoné)

The South Australian Flute Club was founded on February 11, 1926 by B. Harold Kelsey, who had explored the activities of the Sydney Flute Club and Los Angeles Flute Club during 1925. Alfred Bohm, flute teacher at the Elder Conservatorium from 1904-18, was the Honorary Conductor. The South Australian Flute Club was active until about 1940, when everyone’s lives were interrupted by World War II. After the cessation of war in 1945, many of the Flute Clubs, including the South Australian Flute Club, were not revived.

Two events in the 1960s began the revival of ‘Flute Clubs’ in Australia. In 1966, Nicola Snekker arranged the first masterclass given at the Sydney Conservatorium, presented by Jean-Pierre Rampal during his first Australian tour. All the local flautists attended this event, but only Nicola was prepared to perform before her peers. This prompted Linda Vogt (who had been Second Flute in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra) to encourage a group of professionals to meet regularly, having prepared a set piece, and to play in front of one another, with the intent of prompting constructive criticism and learning from one another. ‘If you go blindly through life

with blinkers on, you’re no richer for it’. The Flute Night, as the study group came to be called, met in members’ homes on the second Sunday of every second month; Beryl Potter was the regular pianist. Camaraderie developed from these regular gatherings, with friends and colleagues commenting about each other’s playing, a sort of friendly masterclass. Participants included Deirdre Hall, Nicola Snekker, Jack Freeland, Andrew Gardner, Mal Cunningham, Don Burrows, Greg Matheson, John Leeman, William Frater, Norma Scott, Michael Scott, Rosemary Prior and Gioconda Augimeri. Visiting artists Maxence Larrieu (France), Peter Lloyd (England) and Douglas Whittaker attended the Flute Night. Linda valued a remark made to her by Richard Chugg (Melbourne Symphony Principal Flute), ‘You can learn something from every flute player you meet, even if it’s the wrong way’.

Jean-Pierre Rampal

In 1969, two Australian flautists, Douglas Whittaker and John Wion, who were based overseas, were visiting Australia. Leslie Barklamb (a former member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and teacher at University of Melbourne Conservatorium) decided to organise a concert in Melba Hall at the University of Melbourne on July 27, and invited

them to perform, along with Arnost Bourek, David Cubbin, Linda Vogt and Vernon Hill. To gain admission, each audience member had to bring some type of flute, and the concert culminated with 296 flautists playing their flutes together. As a result, the Victorian Flute Guild was established with Leslie Barklamb as President. He is considered to be the ‘Father of the Flute in Australia’.

In 1971 Professor James Pellerite from Indiana University, USA, visited Sydney and Melbourne for concerts. This visit encouraged Linda Vogt to negotiate a three month placement for him as Artist-in-Residence at the Sydney Conservatorium in 1973 (he was the first Artist-In-Residence at an Australian Conservatorium). Professor Pellerite’s visit culminated in the First Australian Flute Seminar at Easter 1973, with Professor Pellerite as Musical Director and Linda as Executive Director: the first flute seminar or convention held anywhere in the world. At Linda’s instigation the Flute Night was rebadged as the Sydney Flute Society in 1973, becoming the Flute Society of NSW in 1985. In the Australia Day Honours on January 26, 1989, Linda Vogt was

awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for her services to music. National flute organisations began to be established, among them the National Flute Association (USA) founded by Mark Thomas in 1972 and the British Flute Society founded by Trevor Wye in 1983.

The Flute Society of South Australia was founded in 1972 at the instigation of David Cubbin. In early 1972, a steering committee consisting of David Cubbin, Stephen Carter, Alex Gemmell, Alison Rosser, Judy Cooper and Alvis Zvaigzne examined the feasibility of forming a flute society in South Australia. The inaugural meeting was held in the Recital Room, Flinders Street School of Music on July 26, at which David Cubbin proposed the formation of the Flute Society of South Australia. He was elected President, Alison Rosser was elected Secretary and Judy Cooper was elected Treasurer. This was followed by a concert that included music by Quantz, Reicha and Bozza. The Flute Society of South Australia was incorporated on October 16, 1975.

Since its foundation the Flute Society has organised and presented a wide range of events. The Flute Society’s Committee arranged for James Pellerite to visit Adelaide immediately after the First Australian Flute Seminar to give a recital and a masterclass. Flute Societies and Guilds were also established in Brisbane, Perth, Hobart and Canberra, and also in Darwin, Alice Springs, Darling Downs, Lismore, Newcastle and Coffs Harbour. Today, only the Flute Societies and Guilds in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide are active.

South Australian Flute News has been produced and distributed regularly since 1979 to provide information about coming events and informative articles. Its predecessor was a one or two page news sheet.

The Australian Flute Convention Advisory and Co-ordinating Committee (AFCACC) was established in 1975 to oversee the organisation of Australian Flute Conventions. At Easter 1976, the Flute Society of South Australia hosted the Second Australian Flute Convention, held at Pulteney Grammar School and directed by David Cubbin. This featured prominent Australian flautists Vernon Hill, James Carson, Linda Vogt, Leslie Barklamb, Victor McMahon, David Cubbin, Margaret Crawford, Zdenek Bruderhans and Owen Fisenden. Geoffrey Collins was the winner of the First Australian Flute Competition. In September 1981 the Australian Flute Association replaced AFCACC.

In March 1974 the Flute Society’s Flute Choir was formed, and performed at a concert on May 8 at Pilgrim Church as part of the first Come Out Festival. The conductor was Joannes Roose. In July 1978 a concert was held at St Augustine’s Church, Unley, in conjunction with the organist, Len Porter, for the Centenary of the organ. Elizabeth Koch was the guest soloist, and a Flute Choir of over 80 flutes played under the direction of Alex Gemmell. The Flute Choir continued to be active until the early 1990s. The Flute Choir rehearsed periodically for performances at venues including St Augustine’s Church, Black Forest Uniting Church and Unley Uniting Church, and also played at Carols by Candlelight and the Royal Adelaide Show. Alex Gemmell did much of the conducting and Brenda McMurtrie arranged music for the Flute Choir.

In July 1982, the Flute Society celebrated its 10th anniversary with a seminar at Goodwood Orphanage, directed by David Cubbin, with guest artists Vernon Hill and Neil Fisenden. A special concert was given in Elder Hall. The Flute Choir, conducted by David Cubbin, performed Synthesis, a

Over the years, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has toured a number of flautists who performed with their symphony orchestras in each state and sometimes gave recitals as well. Douglas Whittaker toured in 1969 on short notice to replace Italian flautist Severino Gazzelloni who had to cancel his visit to Australia. Sir James Galway made his first Australian tour in 1977, and wowed the audiences with his Irish charm, musicianship and virtuosity. He made return visits for the ABC in 1980 (Adelaide Festival), 1983 and 1986. In 1990 he toured Australia with The Chieftains and gave a recital at the Festival Theatre in December 2010. John Wion toured for the ABC in 1977 and 1980, David Cubbin toured in 1979 and Jean-Pierre Rampal made his second tour in 1987. The Flute Society made block bookings on behalf of members for several of these concerts.

In April 1988, the Seventh Australian Flute Convention was held in Adelaide with Alison Rosser as director. It was the largest event organised by the Flute Society of South Australia. This was Australia’s Bicentennial year, and the Convention’s theme was ‘Join in

and Enjoy’. It was envisaged that all flautists would have plenty of opportunities to play their flutes during the Convention. Visiting artists and lecturers from overseas included Bonita Boyd and Felix Skowronek from the USA and Andreas Eichhorn from Germany. Australian professional flautists were invited to perform and give masterclasses and lectures. As part of the Australian theme, Anne Boyd’s Bali Moods 1 and 2 was commissioned for the event and premiered by Geoffrey Collins. The Fifth Australian National Flute Competition and Third Australian National Orchestral Auditions Competition were held during the Convention. Both competitions were won by Michael Waye, Principal Piccolo in the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

The Flute Society’s 21st birthday was celebrated in July 1993 with a Flute Fest at Marryatville High School, comprising a weekend of masterclasses and fun flute activities, with guest artists David Cubbin, Vernon Hill and Virginia Taylor. There was also a concert in Elder Hall. ‘Celebrate 30!!’ was the theme when the Flute Society turned 30 in 2002. Celebrations in September 2002 marked the occasion with a recital by guest flautist Janet Webb in Elder Hall, followed by a day of masterclasses, ensemble playing and a birthday cake. ‘Celebrating 40!’ was held at Seymour College Performing Arts Centre in September 2012, with guest artists Janet Webb and Jocelyn Fazzone from Sydney. Janet and Jocelyn gave a recital at Pilgrim Church. And there was another birthday cake!

Since 1981, the Flute Society has collaborated with the Adelaide Eisteddfod Society to present the Adelaide Eisteddfod Flute Division. This began with 8 sections, and for 2017, 26 sections have been offered. The David Cubbin Flute Award is given to the most promising flautist in the Open Flute section. The Ray Rosser Memorial Award is presented to the most promising flautist from the 10 Years and Under and 12 Years and Under Sections. Venues have included Malvern Uniting Church Hall, Maylands Uniting Church Hall, St Chad’s Anglican Church (Fullarton), Beaumont Uniting Church Hall, Trinity Baptist Centre (Colonel Light Gardens), Rosefield Uniting Church (Highgate), Unley Uniting Church and Norwood Salvation Army Citadel. The adjudication alternates yearly between local adjudicators and an interstate adjudicator. Interstate adjudicators have included David Cubbin, Peter Bartels, Carolyn Bounds, Margaret Crawford, Karen Lonsdale and Teresa Rabe: Neil Fisenden is adjudicating in 2017.

and Flutes with Leaps and Bounds. In more recent years the Flute Fun Days for young flautists have been a popular annual event. They have been directed a number of times by the interstate Eisteddfod adjudicators including Peter Bartels, Carolyn Bounds, Margaret Crawford, Karen Lonsdale and Teresa Rabe, with Neil Fisenden directing in 2017 (the costs of airfares and accommodation have been shared between the Flute Society and Adelaide Eisteddfod Society).

The Flute Society’s Committee decided to establish a Scholarship Fund in 1985 for the eventual holding of an annual scholarship for young flautists aged 15 years and under, with Ryszard Duluk, Helen Greacen and Robert Brown as the initial subcommittee members. After four years of fundraising the first scholarship was held in 1989 with Geoffrey Collins as adjudicator. The First prize was awarded to Melita White. The scholarship is held annually. In late 1995 the scholarship was renamed the Carolyn White Memorial Scholarship after a much respected past President of the Flute Society. Venues have included Flinders Street School of Music, Beaumont Uniting Church, Colonel Light Gardens Uniting Church and

Unley Uniting Church. In 1992 the David Cubbin Memorial Prize was established and named after the Flute Society’s Founder. The inaugural David Cubbin Memorial Prize was awarded to Monica Fynnaart. Initially it was held every year until 1998, and after a six year break, it has been held every two years since 2004. Venues have included the Flinders Street School of Music, Mead Hall (Flinders Street Baptist Church), Hartley Concert Room and Unley Uniting Church. Flute Teachers Evenings have been organised periodically by Elizabeth Koch AM. The Flute Society maintains a Flute Teachers List, which is published twice each year, and is also placed on the website. The website was established around 2005 and more recently a FaceBook page has been set up. Over the years the Flute Society has presented (sometimes collaborating with other organisations and promoters) recitals, masterclasses and workshops (jazz workshops, make your own bamboo flute, etc.) given by local, interstate and overseas professionals. Guest artists have included Don Burrows AO MBE, Vernon Hill, Russell King, Stephen Carter, Margaret Crawford, Elizabeth Koch AM, Alison Rosser, Rae Stratfold, Greg Dikmans, John Wion, Linda Vogt AM, Neil Fisenden, Virginia Taylor, Danielle Eden, Elena Durán, Alan Hardy, Angela Retchford, Carolyn Bounds, Paul Edmund-Davies, Peter Bartels, Anne Norman, Janet Webb, Trevor Wye, Katherine Kemler, Leone Buyse, Michael Cox, Mike Mower, Uwe Grodd (Flute Festival 2006) and Wissam Boustany.

Members Concerts were held periodically in the 1970s and early 1980s, but with a lack of interest these waned. At Linda Pirie’s instigation they were revived in 2011 under the title Tutti Flutti Flute Performance Afternoon, and because of the strong support from members and performers they are held twice each year at Unley Uniting Church. In 1980 Marie Blackman established the Adult Beginners Evening. This became the South Australian Flute Ensemble, which met fortnightly on Tuesday nights under the direction of Caroline Weatherstone. Eventually, because of dwindling numbers, the South Australian Flute Ensemble was discontinued. The Adult Amateurs Flute Afternoon was established in 2010, under the direction of Kerryn Schofield, followed by directors Alison Rosser and Melanie Walters. Amy Johansen is the co-ordinator.

TUTTI FLUTTI – FLUTE

PERFORMANCE AFTERNOON Held: Sunday, May 21, Unley Uniting Church, 187 Unley Road, Unley Director: Linda Pirie

by Sophie Barritt Bravery and courage were displayed in abundance in this year’s first Tutti Flutti Performance Afternoon. Participants from all levels of flute playing should be commended for sharing their musical gifts with the appreciative audience. Each player contributed to a beautiful afternoon concert with an emphasis on a relaxed performance atmosphere for all levels of flute playing. Performances by younger flautists and also adult amateurs in particular shone through. Both performers and audience members benefited from the afternoon of music. ‘I like Tutti Flutti because I can perform in front of an audience without being that nervous if I make a mistake.’ Georgina Dexter’s feedback

RECENT EVENTS about Tutti Flutti demonstrates that a positive atmosphere is being fostered in these performance afternoons so that all flute players can feel comfortable getting up on stage and having a go. Jaclyn Wilmot commented that she especially ‘enjoyed listening to other flute players at all different levels’. As well as an excellent performance opportunity for all ages and stages, the chance to hear other flute players perform is a valuable experience for everyone involved. Scarlett Bauer commented that one of the pieces performed sounded ‘like it’s from Alice in Wonderland’. This really highlights the quality music has in taking the listener to another place and time, regardless of the level of experience in the performer. We look forward our next Tutti Flutti performance afternoon in September that will welcome both first time and repeat performers, family and friends. ♫

RECENT EVENTS ADULT AMATEURS FLUTE ENSEMBLE AFTERNOON

Held: Sunday, June 25, Unley Uniting Church, 187 Unley Road, Unley Director: Melanie Walters

by Robert Brown Melanie Walters was the Director of proceedings and launched everyone involved into ‘Long Tones and Chords’ in C Major and F Major. Dynamics were encouraged (who has heard them mentioned before?). Having persuaded embouchures and fingers to warm up Melanie invited everyone to play Chorales and Rounds, with composers such as Thomas Tallis and Isaac Watts featured. A chance to play alto or bass flute was offered and those players who took the plunge appreciated the opportunity provided. Karen North’s trio arrangement of the British Grenadiers was next. As contemporary techniques were the advertised offering Melanie led the

participants in an exploration of this subject. Have You Ever Seen a Lassie introduced multiphonics, Laughing asked for pitch bends, Telephone was about flutter tonguing, Yo Yo Tricks required headjoint glissandos and Chopsticks needed key clicks The titles refer to compositions by Phyllis Aviden Louke that include these techniques. Everyone enjoyed the challenge of trying to perform these compositions. An arrangement of Basse Dance from Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite was the next item to be offered, followed by more rounds. The afternoon culminated with afternoon tea and a chance to talk with fellow flautists. Tim’s brownies were the featured offering (yum)! Everyone left on a happy note. Do come along to the 2018 Adult Amateurs Flute Ensemble Afternoon. Thank you Melanie for co-ordinating such a fun afternoon. ♫

LETTERS TO GIZMO Young flautists - why not write a letter to Gizmo? He would also love to hear from you if you have a comment, a question, a hint, a puzzle, a joke, a report on a recent flute event (photos are welcome too) or something to share with other young flautists. E-mail Gizmo at [email protected]. Gizmo will be thrilled to receive some e-mails!

Take care to practise the quick passages a little slower, with all the correct fingerings and keeping the fingers near the keys. Never slap the keys with the fingers.

You can be just as busy in a slow section. Don’t zone out! Focus on colour changes, inflections, dynamics, legato. Match body-language to mood. Knock out the habits – the patterns. Be aware; otherwise you are hostage to the patterns, as in real life. When we practice loud we get better at being loud. When we practice being bored we get better are being bored. Body language needs to confirm the result of the breath, not the need for it! Give yourself time to breathe. A rushed breath causes tightness. Create time in which to breathe and make sure you recover.

Many teachers say, ‘Master the instrument so that you can express what you want’. No! Turn this upside down! Know first what you want and then find the means. Also create opportunities – dynamics and colours, everything changing all the time.
