Databases

vs

Internet

Internet

Lots of general information, take some searching to find specifics.

Possibility of undocumented sources of information; who says it is true?

Possible biased information IF the website is supported by a company.

Library DatabasesA free online resource containing information articles from respected print sources and published works.

Provides citation information such as author’s name, source, publisher and date of publication.

Always a reliable, up to date research source.

Unbiased point of view, factual.

What will you find in a library database?• Articles from different kinds of encyclopedias

(science, technology, general)• News and magazine articles• Definitions• Special features such as tables, graphs, and

photographs.

North Pole and Global Warming

Begin with the basics! All databases have a search box where you start your search by typing in a search term.

*A good search term is not too broad or too narrow.

*It might take a few tries before you get the result you want, so keep trying different terms until you get the result you want.

Our search gave us a definition! Many of our databases include dictionaries. Reading the definition might give you an idea of more words to use in your search.

Our databases include photographs, diagrams, graphs and charts. What every well dressed research report needs!

Some times your research topic is so fresh a newspaper or magazine article offers more information than a book from the library.

Our databases search from a huge selection of credible magazine and news papers for up to date information.

Our databases always provide citation information such as author’s name, source, publisher and date of publication.

“Quotation marks” will make sure words are searched together as a phrase.

Search peanut butter

without quotes and

you might get

Search

“peanut butter” with quotes and your result will be

Delicious!

“peanut butter” or “jelly” will result in a document containing the word “peanut butter” the word “jelly”

or both.
