Battery connection

Motor connection

Controller connections

A proper plug, with polarity protection, must be soldered to the battery connection cables. Provide the battery with a con-nection system with polarity protection and always use proper dimension plugs. Do not solder for longer than 5 seconds and after it, be sure that the part can cool without damaging the speed controller. The battery connection cables should not have a total length over 20 cm. ATTENTION Connection to a battery with reverse polarity will destroy the speed controller!

The motor will be connected to the speed controller through three round connectors (G 3,5). The G 3,5 plugs No. 2970 have to be soldered to the motor cables. The three motor cables can alternatively be soldered directly to the speed con-trollers cables.NOTEWhen connecting a sensor motor always pay attention to the wire order. The following connection scheme is mandatory:

ATTENTIONThe connection cables must NEVER be connected in the fol-lowing order:B-A-C, it would cause the immediate destruction of the speed controller!

Setup button

In case of C-B-A configuration you have to set the “Mo-tor-Wiring” in the setting menu to C-B-A to allow the motor to run in the correct direction.

Use the included sensors cable only, pay attention to the cor-rect connection direction and plug it enough to allow a good and stable connection between it and the sensors port.

The three pole cable with JR plug has to be connected to the gas channel port in the receiver. This cable will power the receiver (5,6 V), through the so called BEC system - battery elimination circuit. By the signal cable the speed controller will receive the impulses from the receiver.

Here it is possible to connect an additional cooling fan. When the temperature of the speed controller is under 35°C the fan will be switched off.

To this port is connected the included On/Off switch. If it is not used, the speed controller will automatically switch on when the battery is connected.

Through this button it is possible to set up the settings without programming box or HoTT telemetry and it is even possible to set the gas end points.

Installation in the model and use

Install the ESC in the model so that the cooling surface re-mains free. Provide adequate cooling through generously di-mensioned air intakes.

ATTENTIONIf you do not want to use the controller’s BEC and instead use a separate battery, you must remove and isolate the red wire (+) of the BEC connector as shown in the image. This will prevent a back-flow into the controller, which would destroy it. If you want to connect to the BEC system still an additional battery, you must solder a diode (eg 91505 Schottky diode) on the red wire from the BEC plug, so that current can flow only in the direction of receiver.

CAUTIONIf you also want to connect a battery and controller’s BEC to the receiver, you must necessarily proceed as described above, otherwise the controller will overheat and may burn. Risk of fire and burns!

Throttle stick setting

Ð Switch on (“ON”) the transmitter, then put and hold the gas stick in “neutral” position. Gas and brake should be set at 100% in the transmitter settings.

Ð Connect the battery to the speed controller with the correct polarity. Switch the speed controller on. If all the connection cables are connected properly, the motor will produce a short beep, to indicate that the system has been powered on.

Ð Push the set button just for longer than 1 second. The green LED will flash. When the button is released the green LED will light on and the gas position is then saved.

Ð Then move the stick to full gas. The red LED lights on. Full gas position is then saved.

Ð Move the stick to the full brake position. Both LEDs will light on, full brake position is then saved.

Ð Bring the stick to the neutral position. The red and green LEDs will then flash to indicate that the throttle stick setting procedure has finished.

NOTEThis initial setting of the throttle lever is only necessary if you use another transmitter, or if the settings have been changed.

Programming without HoTT transmitter

1. Switch on the transmitter and move the gas stick to the neutral position.

2. Connect the battery and switch the speed controller on.3. Push and hold the set button for longer than 3 seconds.

Firstly only the green LED will flash, after 2 seconds the red one will do the same.

4. Release the button and the red LED will flash once. It means that the menu point 1 “motor type” has been se-lected (see table on the left). By pushing the gas stick to full gas position and releasing it to neutral position you will move to the next menu point (eg program point 2: battery type; the red LED will then flash twice). There are in total 20 menu points to choose, for each one of them the LED will flash indicating the respective number.

5. Hold the gas stick to the full gas position for longer than 4 seconds to open a menu point. Then both led will flash showing the actual setting. Move the gas stick to full brake and soon to full gas to increase the parameter value of 1. Repeat this operation until you reach up for the wished value.

6. To come back to the menu points, leave the gas stick in neutral position for about 4 seconds.

7. Then you can move to the next menu point (as described in point 4), or you can simply leave the program menu and come back in stand-by mode by briefly pushing the set button.

8. The speed controller is then ready for use.

The program points from 20 to 37 of the following list can be setted only by using a Graupner HoTT transmitter or the pro-gram box No. S8272.

Special featuresAdvanced TimingIf the Advanced Timing value is reduced, then also the power consumption and the temperature of the motor are reduced. The maximum speed and the acceleration decrease too, the battery life increases. If the Advanced Timing value is increased, then increases the power consumption and the temperature of the motor. Max-imum speed and acceleration increase and the battery life decreases. To increase the maximum speed we recommend the use of a different gear ratio. If the value is 0, the controller is in the 0-Boost mode and is thus correspondingly 0 Boost compliant. This is signaled by a flashing green LED in neutral position.Acceleration Influences the acceleration of the motor. A lower value means a slower motor acceleration, a higher value means more pow-er.Start Power Used as launch control, it can make start much easier to han-dle.Power CurveIt affects the proportionality in gas control. A lower value makes gas more docile and controllable, a higher value makes the gas more aggressive.Reverse functionTwoWay: Reverse with settable delay (off – 2.5 sec)TwoWay2: regardless of Reverse Delay setting, after motor stopped and 1sec, reverse function will get output. (Max. 6~7sec, direction will be reversed)TwoWay3: If Trigger of Radio is moving from forward to back-ward movement, then ESC will give the Break to motor , and Motor will be stopped. If they are in same position, Reverse function is not working. In order to use Reverse function, Trigger of Radio should move to Neutral position, and go to Backward movement, then you could use reverse function normally.Telemetry function Values as the components temperature, speed and voltage so as the error protocol can be read on the program box.Checking possible through TX, RX for Cars, such as Graupner HoTT X-8E, X-8N.

NOTEIf during use there should be a problem caused by sensor, the speed controller will switch automatically from sensor to sensorless!

Max-imum speed and acceleration increase and the battery life decreases. To increase the maximum speed we recommend the use of a different gear ratio. If the value is 0, the controller is in the 0-Boost mode and is thus correspondingly 0 Boost compliant. This is signaled by a flashing green LED in neutral position.

Acceleration (acceleration and soft gas)Here you can set the acceleration value. 0 ~ 10Through this function you can set how fast the motor response will be to the throttle. It affects the motor speed. EA lower value means a slower motor acceleration, a higher value means more power.

Start power (start power)Here you can set the start power.

Lowest / Low / Normal / High / Highest.Though this function you can set the minimal start power, when the motor turns. It can be associated to a minimal gas quantity.

St.curr. Limit (start current limit)Here you can set the start current limit. Off / 10% ~ 100%Used as a launch control, It can simplify starts. With optimal setting this function can eliminate the wheel slipping during start. The value depends on many model specifications. “OFF” allows the maximum power. The start current limit is activated by holding the gas stick in neutral or brake position for longer then 10 seconds. It is deactivated when the motor turns and the gas stick comes back to neutral position.

curr. Limit (current limit)Here you can set the current limit. Off / 10% ~ 100%By using this function you can reduce the torque of your mo-tor and make your model easier to control.

reverse func (reverse function)Reverse gear on/off.One Way: Functions: forward/brakeTwo Way 1: Functions: forward/brake/reverse. The reverse gear will be automatically activated after the reverse delay. During this delay the brake is active. Two Way 2: Functions: forward/brake/reverse. If the stick on the transmitter is moved and the motor rotates, then the brake is activated. If the motor does not rotate and the stick is moved to the brake direction, then the reverse function is activated. At the latest after 6 seconds of braking the reverse function is activated in any case, even if the motor is still rotating.TwoWay3: Functions: forward/brake/reverse.The reverse is possible only when the throttle stick is moved from forward to brake position and then set back to neutral. Pushing the throttle to brake position activates then the re-verse.

Rev.Delay (reverse gear delay)Here you can set the delay before reverse gear, Off / 0.2s / 0.5s / 0.8s / 1.3s / 1.8s / 2.5s. The reverse gear delay is the time lapse after which the reverse is activated. After that the reverse is active.

Max-reverse (maximum reverse speed)Here you can set the maximum reverse speed, 20% ~ 100%.The maximum reverse speed determines the maximum pow-er that is available when driving in reverse and permits reduc-

Firmware Update

The user can use the update facility to maintain the speed controller of the GM GENIUS ULTRA +T 180A always at the latest state of development and ensure that additional functions can be added in the future.General PreparationTo update, you need a Windows PC and the grStudio firm-ware upgrade software. This can be downloaded from our website. Open the item page for your controller and click on the Downloads tab.Under the item PC Update software, you will now find the re-quired file. After it has been downloaded, it must be extracted.1. USB driver installed? (The driver is located in the “HoTT_PC_Software” software package) 2. Select the COM port 3. Start the “Speed controller” program In the “Device” program group, start the “Speed controller” program. (Alternatively, se-lect the appropriate entry under “Menu”.)

4. Disconnect the speed controllerDisconnect the controller from the receiver, the power supply and a motor.5. Connect the speed controller to the PCRequired accessories:• USB interface for Graupner/GM-GENIUS 7168.6• USB interface adapter cable for HoTT Sensors/Manager

7168.S• Operating battery

Connect the interface adapter (No.7168.6) to the USB cable and then connect the USB cable to the computer. An LED on the interface adapter should glow red, otherwise, check Step (1.). (Depending on the operating system, the LED goes out after a certain period of time).Disconnect the 3-wire connection cable of the speed con-troller from the receiver. Connect the 2 wire end of the adapt-er cable (No. 7168.S) to the telemetry jack (see p. 7) on the speed controller.

Now connect an operating battery (do not exceed the max. permissible operating voltage!) to the appropriate connections on the controller. However, do not yet switch on the controller by means of the ON/OFF switch on the controller. You now have two ways of loading the firmware file:“Load automatically” or “Open file”.

If you wish to transfer the current firmware to the controller automatically, use the “Load automatically” option. The ap-plication will then attempt to download the current firmware over the Internet. The bar begins to fill in green immediately after you click the on-screen button.Switch on the controller at the switch before the bar fills. An additional dialogue field opens in which you can click on the desired firmware and then on the “Open file” on-screen but-ton. The application then downloads the file and transfers it to the controller. If you wish to transfer special firmware that you have in the form of a file to the controller, use the “Open file” option. In the dialogue that then opens, select the previously downloaded file; the bar then begins to fill in green. Switch on the controller at the switch before the bar fills; the application will then transfer the firmware.Detailed update instructions for HoTT components can be found on our home page in the download section for the par-ticular item.
