Berlin OverviewBerlin is the capital and chief urban center of Germany. The 6,000,000-person metropolitan city lies at the heart of the North German Plain, on an east-west commercial and geographic axis that helped make it the capital of the kingdom of Prussia and then, from 1871, of a unified Germany. Berlin’s former glory ended in 1945, but the city survived the destruction of World War II. It was rebuilt and came to show amazing economic and cultural growth.

Germany’s division after the war put Berlin entirely within the territory of the German Democratic Republic (GDR, or East Germany). The city itself echoed the national partition—East Berlin being the capital of East Germany and West Berlin a Land (state) of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG, or West Germany). West Berlin’s isolation was later reinforced by the concrete barrier erected in 1961 and known as the Berlin Wall. Its status as an enclave made Berlin a continuous focus of confrontation between the Eastern and Western powers as well as a symbol of Western lifestyle for 45 years. The fall of the East German communist regime—and the accompanying opening of the wall—in late 1989 unexpectedly raised the prospect for Berlin’s reinstatement as the all-German capital. That status was restored in 1990 under the terms of the unification treaty, and subsequently Berlin was designated a state, one of the 16 constituting Germany. These developments heralded the city’s return to its historic position of prominence in European culture and commerce.

Until the “peaceful revolution” of 1989, the most notorious feature of the city’s topography was the Berlin Wall, erected by the East German communist government in 1961 to stop free movement between East Berlin (and indeed East Germany) and West Berlin. The boundary between East and West Berlin and the boundary between West Berlin and East Germany, for a combined length of 103 miles were closed until 1989 by a solid ring of barriers, consisting mostly of prefabricated concrete slabs. Of the several heavily guarded crossing points, Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstraße was the most famous. In some places buildings had immediately adjoined the wall, and in the early days of division some people died attempting to jump to freedom from their upper floors. Today crosses mark some of the places where these and other would-be refugees, numbering at least 110, lost their lives.

Berlin is home to over 600,000 registered foreign residents, originating from approximately 190 different countries. In this diverse and multi-national city, only 1 out of 4 people living in Berlin actually grew up there. Half of Berlin residents are single, the highest percentage in all of Germany. Only 3 percent of people in Berlin attend a church, and only half of those people state that they have a living faith. Eastern Germany has the highest percentage of atheists in the world at over 52.1%, and has been called “the most Godless place on earth.”

Berlin Mission Trip 2019Dates: September 12-19, 2019

Cost: $1,500 (includes airfare, transportation, lodging, group meals, group insurance, and ministry expenses) See Financial Policy and Procedures for more information.

Purpose: Berlin is one of the most non-Christian places in the world. It is a massive metropolitan with people from all cultures, languages, and lifestyles. Ryan McMillan and Craig Stewart, along with their wives, Brea and Jen, have been tasked by the International Mission Board to evangelize the lost in Berlin and to plan churches. We will be working in the Berlin neighborhood of Friedrichshain and Lichtenberg, which is located in what was previously East Berlin.

On this trip, we will be working alongside them in whatever ways are needed. We will potentially do prayerwalking, engaging with Berliners in spiritual conversations and in prayer, support the church-planting efforts of Ryan and Craig, helping make “missions maps” of the neighborhood, service projects and other tasks as needed.

Overview: We will meet at Cross Pointe Ocala on Thursday, September 12th to head to Orlando International Airport. We will eat dinner at the airport after checking in. Our flight will be an overnight flight, with a layover in Oslo, Norway. We will arrive at the Schoenfeld Airport on Friday, September 13 th, and we will take the train to our apartment in Lichtenberg.

During the week, we will eat breakfast together at the apartment, and Ryan and Craig will join us for training and information. We will do our missions activities following and return back to the apartment each evening to recap and debrief the day. There will be time for us to explore the city to learn about its history and culture while observing (and even engaging) Berliners.

On Thursday, September 19th, we will pack up and clean up the apartment and head back to the Schoenfeld Airport in late morning, arriving in Orlando around 9:00 p.m. that evening. We’ll go through customs, get our luggage, and head back to Ocala.

Costs that will not be part of this cost will be individual meals, drinks or snacks; souvenirs or personal items; medicine; passport expenses; and so on. The missionaries on the ground estimate the cost of the trip for individual expenses to be around $40. We will be staying in our own apartment-style place, with plenty of rooms, beds, and bathrooms. Team Covenant, Values, and Statement of FaithTeam Covenant

The Cross Pointe Ocala Missions Team believes that God is calling short-term missionary teams to bring the fruit of the gospel for the good of the world. (John 15:16) We believe that following elements are crucial to the effectiveness, quality, and safety of a short-term mission trip. As a member of a short-term mission’s team, I will agree to:

1. Remember that I am representing Jesus Christ as well as Cross Pointe Ocala. I will model Jesus in my behavior and attitude.

2. Remember that I am a guest working at the invitation of my hosts. I will respect their ministry methods realizing that ministry in other parts of the world may look different than what I am used to.

3. Commit being a group of individuals who unite as one in purpose, striving to accomplish the same goal of glorifying Christ and increasing His church. (1 Corinthians 12:1-31)

4. Develop and maintain a servant’s attitude toward all nationals and my teammates.5. Commit to resolving all inter-team conflicts according to biblical principles as laid out in

Matthew 18:15-20. In all issues of conflict, I will commit to maintain a humble spirit of confidentially, while seeking to affirm one another in love (Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 4:6).

6. Respect my team leader and his or her decisions. In situations of team concerns, the team leader will be the team guide.

7. Refrain from a complaining or criticizing attitude towards nationals, team leaders, and my teammates. I recognize that travel can present numerous unexpected and undesired circumstances, but the rewards of conquering such circumstances are innumerable. I will strive to be creative, accommodating and supportive in all situations in order to promote a positive team environment without judgement.

8. Respond without defensiveness when corrected, believing the other team members have my best interests and the interests of the team in mind. (Proverbs 27:5-6)

9. Refrain from gossip. (Ephesians 4:29)10. I will strive (with God’s help) to be an imitator of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1), not causing a

brother to stumble (1 Corinthians 8:9-13), and acting in a manner appropriate to the host culture, doing all for the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

11. Refrain from illegal drugs and the use of tobacco while on the trip.12. Refrain from the use of inappropriate or obscene language. (Ephesians 5:4, Colossians 3:8, 4:6)13. Attend all team meetings before, during and after the trip. Team meetings are crucial for

accomplishing the objectives of the trip and creating unity among the team.14. Commit myself to personal quiet times by being faithful in my daily time with God. Growing

individually is essential to growing as a team.15. Commit myself to daily prayer, every day up to and including our time in the field, for the

individuals on our team, the church planters we will serve with, and Cross Pointe

Cross Pointe’s Missional Convictions

1. We believe that God is calling His people to join Him in a passion for seeing His Name proclaimed amongst every tribe, tongue, and nation of the earth.

Page 14: s3.amazonaws.com · Web viewBerlin is the capital and chief urban center of Germany. The 6,000,000-person metropolitan city lies at the heart of the North German Plain, on an east-west

2. We believe that the gospel is our main motivator to go and share Christ not only in Ocala, but throughout the world.

3. We believe that God calls us to welcome and embrace people from every ethnicity and culture, striving to show no partiality, by the grace of God.

4. We believe that God is calling us to partner humbly with missionaries and church planters, to encourage them, to serve them, and to help them in whatever way is needed.

5. We believe that God cares about all needs, including physical, social, and relational, and that by meeting those needs, God will open the door for people to hear and receive the Gospel.

6. We believe that everyone who is a follower of Jesus is included in the Great Commission to share the gospel in word and deed.

7. We believe that it is only through God’s strength that His Kingdom can be impacted and expanded and not our own strength.

8. We believe that those who have been changed by Jesus have been called to step out of their comfort zones and trust God to do more than we can ask or think.

9. We believe that missions is ultimately about making disciples and glorifying God.

The Mission of Cross Pointe Ocala

“Cross Pointe exists to connect people to God, to each other, and to the world.”

Cross Pointe’s Statement of Faith

1. The Trinity - There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4)

2. God the Father - The first person of the Godhead orders and directs all things according to His own purpose and pleasure. He authored, created, and sustains all things in the universe without any means other than His own pure power. By His grace, He involves himself in the affairs of men, hears and answers prayer, and saves from sin and death all that come to Him through Christ. (Matthew 6:9, Ephesians 1:3, John 5:19)

3. Jesus the Son - He eternally existed as the second person of the Godhead. By His virgin birth, He came to earth as fully God and fully man, living a sinless life. His death on the cross made atonement for man’s sin, evidenced by his bodily resurrection from the dead. He physically ascended to the right hand of God the Father, and He will return in power and glory. (John 1:14, Colossians 2:9, Acts 2:32)

4. The Holy Spirit - The third part of the Godhead convicts people of sin, regenerates, indwells, instructs, and sets apart believers into a holy life. We encourage all believers to seek a life of obedience to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. We believe this step is essential for empowering believers for victorious living and ministry through the gifts given by the Holy Spirit. (Titus 3:5, Acts 1:8, I Corinthians 3:16)

5. The Bible- The Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the complete, divinely inspired, infallible Word of God. The Bible is the supreme authority and guide for our Christian faith and living. (II Peter 1:20, Hebrews 4:12)

Page 15: s3.amazonaws.com · Web viewBerlin is the capital and chief urban center of Germany. The 6,000,000-person metropolitan city lies at the heart of the North German Plain, on an east-west

6. The Nature of Humanity - Humanity was directly created in God’s image, voluntarily fell into sin by personal disobedience to the will of God; consequently, all people are spiritually dead apart from Jesus Christ. The fall of humanity was a once-for-all historical fact. Its effect spread to everyone, each of whom is born with a sinful nature and is in need of salvation. (Ephesians 2:1, Romans 3:10, Romans 3:23-24)

7. The Necessity of Salvation - Salvation is by grace, a gift of God apart from works. Salvation requires repentance, a turning from one’s own way to God’s way. All who receive Jesus Christ are born again, regenerated by the Holy Spirit, and become the children of God. Our relationship with Christ is secure not by our own actions, but by the sustaining power and love of God. We will manifest true salvation by a changed life. (Titus 2:11, I John 1:9, I Peter 2:2)

8. The Church - The church is the body of all believers consisting of all born-again persons without respect to race, culture, or background. Directed by Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, the Church is taking the good news of salvation to the whole world. Our church is inclusive rather than exclusive and stresses love for God and one another, the unity of all believers, and obedience to the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-21, Ephesians 3:10)

9. Eternity - People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence. (John 3:16, John 14:17, Romans 6:23, Romans 8:17-18, Revelation 20:15, I Corinthians 2:7-9)

I, ________________________________________, agree to abide by the Team Covenant and am in agreement with Cross Pointe’s Missional Convictions, the Mission of Cross Pointe, and Cross Pointe’s Statement of Faith.
