SDN to offer the only chicken at the 2015 fairStaff Report

SIDNEY — The Sidney Daily News will be offering the only chicken at the fair this year, con-tinuing a seven year tradition of offering a Buckeye pottery piece with a paid one-year subscrip-tion.

State officials banned chickens and other bird projects this year due to the outbreak of Avian flu among the fowl population.

The 2015 piece is a bank in the shape of a chick-en, featuring the Ohio Buckeye five-leaf cluster, which matches the previous years’ pottery pieces.

Those who purchase a new one-year subscription at $99 are eligible for the piece of pottery, valued at $30.

The special subscriptions are available only at the Sidney Daily News booth in the Merchant Building. Subscriptions must be paid for at the time of pur-chase with cash, check or credit card. One pottery piece per subscription while supplies last.

The Sidney Daily News fair booth will be manned as follows:

Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year’s pottery was designed and crafted by Liberty Pottery in Roscoe Village, Coschocton, which specializes in hand-thrown, hand-painted pot-tery, Each piece is handmade and hand-painted by on-site artists and each piece will be unique.

The 2015 Sidney Daily News county fair subscription premium will be the only chicken at the fair this year. A Ohio Buckeye chicken bank will be available while supplies last for those purchasing a one-year subscription to the newspaper. Check out the Sidney Daily News booth in the Merchant Building.

SIDNEY — Shelby County fair-goers will want to check out the Sidney Daily News booth in the Mer-chant Building this year. Not only will there be free give-aways and lots to see in the chicken-themed booth, there also will be an opportunity to spin a wheel to land on the lucky number for the day and a chance to win a $52 per year subscription — a $47 savings from the regular $99 fair rate.

The booth also will feature a chicken and egg cut-out for people to take photos and a special Sidney Daily News chicken will be walking the fairgrounds, also to take selfies — #FairChicken. Share your pho-tos on the newspaper’s Facebook for a chance to win a prize.

A big plus this year will be the change in the Sidney Daily News’ photo policy. The SDN photog-raphers will take photos of all junior fair exhibitors who are the top winners in their categories. And this year, the exhibitors may bring along their tro-phy or ribbon to be photographed with their project.

Junior Fair participants will receive photo cards from judges. The cards should be filled out and brought with the project/trophy/ribbon to the news-paper’s photo area, located in front of the dairy barn.

Photographs are taken of overall contest winners. If there is no such award, then winners of contests with 10 or more pre-fair registered entrants will be photographed. In some cases, judges will select photo card recipients.

The newspaper also will use photographs of over-all winners for Senior Fair (open class) contests with at least 10 entrants registered. There will be the overall winners for whole shows when available. A list of eligible winners will be in the secretary’s office during fair week and also with the newspaper photographer on duty.

It’s the responsibility of the eligible winner to bring is or her project to the newspaper’s photo area, If the project cannot be brought to the area, please contact the photographer to arrange a time for a photograph,

A photographer will be at the photo area Monday-Friday from noon to 1 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. On Satur-day, the photo area will be manned from 6-7 p.m.

Also, don’t forget to grab a copy of the Sidney Daily News for complete fair coverage. A special fair results section will be published inside the daily paper beginning Wednesday, July 29 through Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Results also will be posted to our website at sid-neydailynews.com and to our Facebook page

Shelby County FairSomething for everyoneBy Patricia Ann [email protected]

SIDNEY — The 2015 Shelby County Fair, which runs from July 26 through Aug. 1 at the fairgrounds, has something for everyone.

“You can always find some-thing to do, something to watch, something to eat,” said Shelby County Agricultural Society Sec-retary Jerry Schaffner.

Live animals from rabbits to llamas to bears are on view. Grange exhibits, 4-H projects, fine art and photography, and the products and services offered by area businesses entice visitors out of the sunshine and into the halls. Midway barkers encour-age children onto thrilling rides and young men to try their skills at winning giant toys for their sweethearts. Contests from horse racing to horseshoe pitch-ing to the truck and tractor pulls and performers from singers to cheerleaders keep spectators on the edge of their seats in the grandstand.

And then there’s the food: ten-derloins and cotton candy, bloo-min onions and ice cream cones, sugar waffles and french fries, funnel cakes and hot dogs. A recent Facebook survey revealed that 75 percent of local fair-goers go for the food.

Schaffner likes cherry-flavored Cosmic Ice.

“And there must be something different about eating french fries at the fair. Maybe it’s because they have vinegar there,” he said. He also looks forward to the Pork Producers’ sausage sand-wiches.

But ask what he likes the best about the Shelby County Fair and he can answer in one word: “Everything,” he said. He’s been the fair secretary, which makes him the event’s chief overseer, for more than 27 years. His annual attendance dates back much far-ther than that.

“My mom and dad were big in the Compromise Grange,” he said. So he attended his first fair as a babe-in-arms with them and he’s not missed one in the 70 years since. He now visits 20 fairs a year in other counties and it’s very clear to him what makes ours special.

“For our size county, we have really a lot of young people involved in our fair,” he said. “Through FFA, Girl Scouts and 4-H, we have over 1,000 kids who exhibit at the fair.”

If there’s a perfect county fair in heaven, Schaffner said it will have everything “we have here.”

Fair admission this year is $9 per person for people who are

36 inches tall or taller. A weekly pass costs $25. The prices include all rides. And there are several opportunities for savings.

Discount admission and ride bands good on Sunday and Wednesday are available at 1st National Bank of New Bremen, AAA, Amos Memorial Library, Farmers Elevator in Houston, Ron & Nita’s, Pioneer Electric Co-op, Clancy’s, Sidney Tire, Best One Tire, First Call Auto Parts NAPA and all branches of US Bank.

Also on Sunday, athletes regis-tered with Special Olympics and their caregivers get in free.

People who arrive at the fair-grounds on Monday before 3 p.m. can get in for $5. Veterans and their spouses are admitted free all day Monday. A special program for veterans will be fol-lowed by a performance by the Swing Era Band at 7 p.m. Mon-day. Also on Monday, fair-goers can use coupons for discounts on food. The coupons are at www.shelbycountyfair.com. While on most days of the fair, rides will open at 1 p.m., on Monday, they won’t open until 4 p.m.

Senior citizens get free admis-sion on Tuesday and a free lunch

at noon while supplies last. Younger folks can pile into cars for arrival after 4 p.m., when admission is $30 per car, no mat-ter how many people are in it.

On Thursday, blood donors can take advantage of a $2 dis-count on admission if they wear the T-shirts they got when they donated blood.

Best One Tire, 120 S. Stolle Ave., and Sidney Tire, 1231 Wapakoneta Ave., have Friday admission and ride bands for $7 each.

Children 16 and under get free admission Saturday and can purchase ride bands on the fair-grounds for $7 each.

According to Schaffner, the demolition derby, which will begin at 5 p.m., Sunday, and the pig and calf scramble, sched-uled for Friday at 8 p.m., are the events that bring the most spectators to the fair. Added draws this year will be the Bear Mountain show and a comedic hypnotist.

Schaffner expects overall atten-dance this week to be between 20,000 and 30,000 people.

SIDNEY — From bears to a puppet and country and gospel sing-ers, there’s an act sure to please each fairgoer during the 2015 Shelby County Fair. Various entertainment groups have been signed and are ready to perform at this year’s fair, set for July 26 to Aug. 1.

Bear Mountain Wildlife Encounter

The bears are coming to Shelby County.

No, not the Chicago Bears, but rather the Bear Mountain Wildlife Encounter Show, which will be performing during the Shelby County Fair.

Bear Mountain’s fam-ily of bears is made up of Syrian brown bears. Giza, Nanook, Tutter, Nemo and ZuZu will share their abilities, talents and intel-ligence during their per-formances at the fair.

Bear Mountain has dedicated more than 30 years to the care and well being of the bears.

The show will be next to the gazebo and perfor-mances are planned for 4, 6 and 8 p.m. each day of the fair.

Mike Bishop Comedy Hypnosis Show

Are you willing to be hypnotized? If so, you need to attend the Mike Bishop Comedy Hypnosis Show. He will be performing Sunday, July 26, and Satur-day, Aug. 1, at 3, 5, 7 and 9 p.m. at the stage next to the milkhouse. Performances for Monday, July 27, though Friday, July 31, will be held at 5, 7 and 9 p.m.

Bishop has been per-forming comedy shows for more than 30 years. His presentation is inspi-rational, surprising and funny. His professional training includes lessons in acting, comedy theory, writing, magic, mime and improvisational comedy workshops.

Swing Era BandSwing Era Band, which

is made up of local per-formers, will be perform-ing Monday, July 27, as

part of the Veterans Day activities. The veterans program begins at 7 p.m. in the free entertainment tent. The Swing Era Band is expected to per-form around 7:30 p.m.

The Swing Era Big Band has been entertain-ing swing music fans and dancers throughout western and central Ohio for most of the past four decades. Started in 1975 by Andrew “Bud” Led-with of Sidney, Swing Era has specialized in keeping the sounds of the golden age of swing music alive. This 16-piece band includes some of the finest musicians in Western Ohio. It per-forms a variety of big band and jazz arrange-ments of noted musical composers including Artie Shaw, Woody Her-man, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, as well as big band arrangements of popular songs from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Lost Mountain JamboreeThe 22nd annual Lost

Mountain Jamboree will be held Tuesday, July 28, at 8 p.m. in the free entertainment tent. Timmy G. & the Buckeye Band-its plus Spring & Fall will be taking the stage. Timmy G. Jr. will be a guest performer on the drums. Lori Holt is also a special guest.

The Buckeye Band-its have been performing for 18 years at fairs, festivals, parties and nite clubs. They have also shared the stage with many country music perform-ers, including the late Conway Twitty.

Members of the band are Timmy G, Dale Muss-er, Steve Holt and Ben Musser.

The Shotgun Red ShowSteve Hall, Shotgun

Red and the Shotgun Red Show have been booked for the fair. The show isn’t a puppet show, it’s a show with a puppet.

Shotgun Red was found in a Minnesota hobby shop by Steve Hall. Red became the emcee for Hall’s band. After win-ning a “Battle of the Bands” contest, the band traveled to Nashville for the final competition. While there, Hall and Red “crashed” country broadcast legend Ralph Emery’s morning show. Emery liked the duo and

invited them to be guests on “Nashville Now!”

The show features impersonators Roger Francis and Jennifer Bruce. They perform impressions of more than 30 country artists.

Shotgun Red has appeared for 15 years on the General Jackson Showboat in Nashville Tennessee, 10 years on “Nashville Now” 8 years on “Hee Haw” and is a 10-time nominated Music City News County Com-edy Act of the Year.

The group will be per-forming Wednesday, July 29, at the fair at 8 p.m. in the free entertainment tent. Reserve seats will be available.

Clark MansonHot off his perfor-

mance at Country Concert 2015, Clark Manson will be bringing his talents to the Shelby County Fair on Thursday, July 30, at 8 p.m. in the free entertainment tent.

Manson grew up in Covington and he wanted nothing more than to become a country singer and songwriter. In the summer of 2014, he released “I’m On It” and”Running With the Night” album. His album climbed the iTunes charts, peaking at No. 30 on the day of its release. He has gained more than 60,000 Twitter follow-ers and fans around the world.

He is scheduled to appear with some of Nashville’s biggest names this summer as well as headlining festivals and fairs.

Manson recently signed with WME book-

ing agency as well as a publishing deal with Pop Up Music in Nashville.

Reserve seats are avail-able for the show.

Mr. SpeedIn a repeat perfor-

mance, Mr. Speed, the Worlds No. 1 Kiss Trib-ute Band, will be return-ing to the Shelby County Fair on Friday, July 31, at 8 p.m. The group will be performing in the free entertainment tent.

With 20 years of experi-ence, Mr. Speed continues to write their own chapter in KISShistory. The group bridges the gap between the KISS fans of the 1970s and the new fans in the KISS army.

Reserve seats are avail-able for the show.

Michael English, The NelonsTwo gospel performers,

Michael English and The Nelons, will be perform-ing Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. in the free enter-tainment tent. The per-formance is part of their Greatest Hits Tour.

English is the former lead singer of the Gaither Vocal Band. He joined the band in 1984 and, after the encouragement of Bill Gaither, he embarked on his solo career in 1991. He continues to perform with the Gaither Vocal Band.

Veterans to be honored at fairStaff report

SIDNEY — Military veterans will be hon-ored at the Shelby County Fair when the annu-al Veteran’s Day is held Monday, July 27.

Veterans and their spouses will be admitted to the fair free all day on July 27. The day is sponsored by Area Energy & Electric.

A service officer from the Shelby County Veteran Services Commission will be located next to the Free Entertainment Tent to answer questions and provide information about vet-eran and dependent benefits. Also, ID cards will be made for eligible veterans.

This year’s program will start at 7 p.m. in the Free Entertainment Tent. The guest speak-er will be Cmdr. James W. Grever, retired from the U.S. Navy. He served from 1962 to 1989. Dorothy Love Apartments may be the right answer.

Our residents enjoy spacious living, restaurant-style dining (including two meals per day), housekeeping services, transportation for a night out on the town or a trip to the grocery store and a wonderful social calendar.
