Introduction about Myjava region

• Position: west part of Trenčin region

• Compositon: 15 villages, 2 towns

• Population: 27 229 inhabitans

• Area of this region: 326 km2

• Located in Myjava hills: White Carpathians and Little Carpathians

• Highest peak : Bradlo (543 meters above sea level)

• Unemployment Rate : 7,26 % (2012)

Strengths

• Good roads for all (bicycle and cars)• Sustainable use of the old buildings for traditional and non traditional farming• Integrated use of local resources (wood: fence, furniture, houses, plumb, trees, wood match to

the landscape)• They don’t produce waste. They reuse most of it• Water for the animals no pumping systems, natural way• Internal developing of information system on natural resources• Creating local knowledge• Reuse of waste. (Biogas, brickets)• Diversification- more markets, equal work for all year, gives more job places for the region• Internal comunication: Speaker on a car. For announcements• Young age and high qualification of the employees• Transmit knowledge and traditions by education • They make international and interregional network.• Innovative way of thinking• They like face to face contact• Subsidies have no influence for development(only for basic needs)• Recognised big potential for tourism development by locals • Specialization for the region in horticulture and animal production and organic farming.• Balance between plant and animal production

Strengths

• Farmers decisions based on main principle productivity• Prices are oriented to the costumers income• Farmers products have regional labels• Breeding non local species (horses Columbia, Charolais cows) chose the animals

that don’t need care or training. Efficiency higher, less need for labor. Minimize the cost.

• International cooperation for development of cultural and natural resources• Good strategy of using the Batuv canal. Also the boat was economically good

organized.(Shop on the boat, you can pay in euro)• Traditional farming in social farms ensure income for family.• Collaboration between touristic objects. • Dry apples from local species. Low cost to conserve.

• Short distances of road for bicycles• External developing of information system on natural resourses, only two

information points. Folders and website are in Slovak language.• Old machines generation cost of keep in goodcondition• They like face to face contact• Lack of hospitality (no tea, coffee) • Instructive style to give information (they want to teach us, not a good way to

give information)• Local promotion is focus on the region, lack of EU point of view • Lack of money to support local schools.• Local economy depends on local costumers.• It is not a habit to supply regional poducts for the guests, daily regional product

supply is not available for all the time• No optimized use of touristic places (shop for souvenirs at castle was not open)• Lack of entrepreneurship of people who are implementing non profit orientated

projects. Souvenir shop, lights in museum off during visits, not enough info about region and local products.

• Try to gain new international knowledge and good practices and apply it. • Region try to create possibilities and jobs to attract people. (for example personal

contact with young people and face to face marketing) • Tendency to try to attract children. They want to create a familiar atmosphere • Increasing focus on children• Growing competence to get a financial support encourage to innovate and

cooperate • Growing potential for tourism exists • Improvement of certification system for regional products. • They try to connect sports with history , cultural (skiing and observatorium place

near the monument, networking with Nitra observatorium) • The tendency is an increasing number of tourists. (2 ,5% of GDP coming for the

tourism. The income from tourists is very low. Not accurate statistics). • Development of culinary heritage can attract visitors. (Label, plumb, …)• The region start to become more attractive so the prices of the cottages start to

increase • Involve local inhabitants to guide visitors and to prepare souvenirs

• Diversification: the risk of make everything and make anything• Close the schools. (Not good for the children and no family will come here)• Closing a school making barriers to come to live young family in future• Local projects are based on European funds (exceptions: investment funds is

for development of innovation)• Financial support influence the strategy of the farms (they do environmental

things because they get subsidies for it) • National government gives little support to farmers (because the lac of public
