Counselor’s Corner
Dear PCES Families,
My name is Deb Lawson and this is my tenth year as Prairie Creek’s School Counselor, and
I am excited to get started on yet another great school year! I am here to help your
child navigate through the wonderful and sometimes challenging elementary school years.
Getting a new school year off to a good start can influence children’s attitudes,
confidence, and performance both socially and academically. The transition from August
to September can be difficult for both children and parents. Even children who are eager
to return to class must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and for some,
pressures associated with school life. The degree of adjustment depends on the child, but
parents can help their children (and the rest of the family) manage the increased pace of
life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude.
My Role as Your Child’s School Counselor Is:
To be an advocate for your child and work collaboratively with parents, students,
teachers, administrators, and with our community
Educational Specialist who assists students with their academic, career development, and
personal/social areas.
All students have the opportunity to meet with me, as needed. Students are instructed
to leave me a note and I will schedule with their teacher a time hopefully to meet with
them during their non-instructional time. In addition, I also meet individually with
students whom would benefit from (weekly/ bi-weekly) counseling.
Lastly, I am available to meet with parents. I regularly attend IEP meetings and
parent-teacher conferences. As needed, I can meet with parents individually to discuss
specific concerns or to serve as a liaison for families needing community resources.
Please feel free to contact me anytime through e-mail [email protected] or phone
(913) 592-7122. If I do not answer please leave a message and I will get back to you
as soon as I can.
Sincerely,
Deb Lawson
