Hutt Central School Newsletter No 7 Term 2, 12 June - 16 June 2017 Talofa Lava Everyone, Kia ora to Neavin Broughton, our Kaumatua, who helped us to bless and open our Sandpit on Monday. The students brought their warmth to the new sandpit through their singing and support of our student council and adults who took part in the ceremony. Thank you to Sadie Fleming for cutting the ribbon and Mako Leslie for digging the first official hole. With the sandpit now open, our students have enjoyed exploring the new play and learning area. I have been most impressed with the co-operative games and sharing of space with the range of students. SchoolDocs Our Board of Trustees has reviewed our policy framework in connection with SchoolDocs who are working with us to manage our policies and procedures online. We will send home an information sheet including login and password instructions on Monday 19 June to give you more information and enable you to login to our site and access our policies. Donations Thank you to the families who have paid the school donation. School donations are an essential source of funding for us to provide the level of quality education that you expect your children to receive at school. The harsh reality for us is that Government funding for schools is distributed on the basis of a decile rating. Hutt Central School is a Decile 8 School, meaning that we receive funding according to this decile. The logic behind the system (rightly or wrongly) is an assumption that the communities of higher decile schools will make up the shortfall in Government allocations. The shortfall is made up by school fundraising events and by the recommended parent donation. We greatly appreciate your support! Good students I had some great writing work shared with me from Ryu Mudaliar, Ali Munshi, Khushi Raturi, Asheev Singh, Anant Negi and Fritz Pagtakhan this week. I was most impressed with the details they included and their accurate punctuation. George Dawson and Baylee Packer from Room 6 shared their excellent writing with me as well. George had great letter sounds and Baylee carried out his writing independently. New students Welcome to Toby Rogers-Munro and Rory Henderson who have started school at Hutt Central this week. It is great to have you here! Desks We have a set of school desks that we no longer need and we would like to offer them to families for a donation. As per the photo, there are approximately 25 desks available, please come to the office or contact the office if you would like one (or more). We also have a larger adult desk that is available.

The Senior team were very lucky to host an award winning game designer to kick off the Games Inquiry Unit. Morgan Dave, one of the creators of “The Game Of Awesome” visited us on Friday. He shared with us what he did as a game designer and how “The Game of Awesome” was developed. He set us up to hack a traditional game and make it even better- our first attempt at game designing.

Winter Ills It is that time of the year again when we ask families to be vigilant about reminding children to wash their hands regularly and carefully and not to share drink bottles with others. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home to minimise the risk of spreading bugs. Please leave a message on the school answer service ( 5660059) or email [email protected] stating your child’s name, class number and the reason for their absence.
