To build connections and integrate the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner and the Georgia Performance standards.

To learn how the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner can increase student achievement.

The Standards for the 21st Century Learner were developed by the American Association of School Librarians as a set of skills that learners in this

century will need to succeed.

Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply

knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.

Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.

Pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

These skills are presented in four main

standards:

Let’s Explore the StandardsEach standard has four strands of essential attributes students who master a standard should demonstrate.

Skills - Key abilities needed for understanding, learning, thinking and mastering subjects.

Dispositions in Action - Ongoing beliefs and attitudes that guide thinking and intellectual behavior that can be measured through actions taken.

Responsibilities - Common behaviors used by independent learners in researching, investigating, and problem solving.

Self-Assessment Strategies - Reflections on one’s own learning to determine that the skills, dispositions, and responsibilities are effective.

Let’s Make Some Connections

The unit we will be exploring on the next few slides is Unit 2 - Our Georgia.

This unit was created as a framework for Georgia 2nd grade teachers. In this unit the focus is on Georgia’s government, geography, and economy.

On the following slides we will work to connect the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner to the Georgia Performance Standards that are the focus of this unit.

By completing this activity you will gain an understanding of how readily the AASL standards can be infused into units already being used in your classroom.

SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history.

SS2CG1 The student will define the concept of government and the need for rules and laws.

SS2CG2 The student will identify the roles of the following officials: a. President, b. Governor, c. Mayor.

SS2G1 The student will locate major topographical features of Georgia and will describe how these features define Georgia’s surface.

o1.2.1 Display initiative and engagement by posing questions and investigating the answers beyond the collection of superficial facts.

o4.1.4 Seek information for personal learning in a variety of formats and genres.

o3.3.6 Use information and knowledge in the service of democratic values.

o2.1.1 Continue and inquiry based research process by applying critical thinking skills to information and knowledge in order to construct new understandings, draw conclusions, and create new knowledge.
