Page 3: S. Suzanne Helms MEDT 7461 Spring 2011

Which of these goals do you have for your students?

I want my students to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.

I want my students to draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.

I believe that students should share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.

I want my students to pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

ALL OF THEM OF COURSE!

AASLStandards

The Standards for the 21st Century Learner were developed by the American Association of School Librarians as a set of skills that learners in this

century will need to succeed.

Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply

knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.

Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.

Pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

These skills are presented in four main

standards:

Let’s Explore the StandardsEach standard has four strands of essential attributes students who master a standard should demonstrate.

Skills - Key abilities needed for understanding, learning, thinking and mastering subjects.

Dispositions in Action - Ongoing beliefs and attitudes that guide thinking and intellectual behavior that can be measured through actions taken.

Responsibilities - Common behaviors used by independent learners in researching, investigating, and problem solving.

Self-Assessment Strategies - Reflections on one’s own learning to determine that the skills, dispositions, and responsibilities are effective.

Strategies

Can the student recognize personal strengths and weaknesses over time and become a stronger, more independent learner?

Is the student disposed to higher-level thinking and actively engaged in critical thinking to gain and share knowledge?

Does the student have the right proficiencies to explore a topic or subject further?

Is the student aware that the foundational traits for 21st century learning require self-accountability that extends beyond skills and dispositions?

Let’s Make Some Connections

The unit we will be exploring on the next few slides is Unit 2 - Our Georgia.

This unit was created as a framework for Georgia 2nd grade teachers. In this unit the focus is on Georgia’s government, geography, and economy.

On the following slides we will work to connect the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner to the Georgia Performance Standards that are the focus of this unit.

By completing this activity you will gain an understanding of how readily the AASL standards can be infused into units already being used in your classroom.
