“GUARDIAN OF OUR CHILDREN”Egypt Shriners Clubs and Units Meeting Dates
Reginald James Guier
Egypt Shriners Potentate 2018
Dear Brother Nobles and Ladies,
The month of March was a very Busy month in so many ways. Egypt Shrine members continued to show
the support to the widows and family of the numerous departed Nobles during our Memorial Service.
Assistant Rabban, Dean DiLeo and his committee, Legion of Honor, Greeters and Ladies without Nobles
all assisted in making March 11th a special day. Thank you for all that attended and a special thanks to
Holyrood Lodge and Scottish Rite for their assistance in providing the facility.
Egypt Shrine Sultans continued spread our message to the community by participating in the St. Patrick’s
Day Parade. Many Nobles were invited and joined the Sultans in their 4th parade in the last two month.
Great times were had by one and all.
Your Divan traveled though out the month and attended the monthly meeting of the Highlands Shrine Club enjoying a great group
of dedicated Shriners in helping each other in the Community and our Hospital. We as the Divan continued to journey to Blue Lodge
meetings and speak to fellow brother Mason and Shriners informing them of the fun in our Fraternity and advancements in our
Philanthropy. Please remember to ask a fellow Brother in your Blue Lodge to Join the Shrine so he can enjoy all that we do.
The end of March came quick with a nice Installation of Janine Green as Queen of Elim Temple No, 76. All members of Egypt Shrine
wish you and all the Members of the Daughters of the Nile a successful year.
Don’t forget to take time and come out to join your fellow members who will be out for our 53rd Annual Egypt Shrine Circus. The circus
will be April 12 – 15, 2018 at the Entertainment Hall of the Florida State Fair Gounds. The First Lady’s project this year is replacing the
Circus Trailer. The proceeds from the 100 year Pin, Hat and Good Life Bedsheets will accomplish this venture.
Your Shrine continues to Grow and the opportunity to hear about the future for Egypt Shrine is reported during your stated meeting on
the second Wednesday of the Month at Centro Asturiano. Please
join us to learn more about your future Building and events.
My Brothers, together we can show everyone that this is indeed
the world’s greatest fraternity.
Peace be with you, my brothers (Es Selamu Aleikum).

MEMBERSHIPNobles, it has been an exciting year for us so far. Kicking off our Centennial year under Illustrious Sir Reggie Guier, Egypt has doubled down on membership! This year not only saw Egypt’s Sultans march in the Gasparilla parade of pirates (now the 3rd largest parade in America), but also an expanded online initiative. Between “beashrinernow.com” and “webfez.shrinenet.org”, your membership committee is pushing each noble to engage young men and masons and provide their information to our system. This will enable us to help you engage your prospects in fellowship, fun, and community events.
By engaging new men in person they will feel the sense of fun, excitement, and humility of our great cause and with their eventual membership, Egypt Shrine will become stronger for it. We need each of our Nobles to help us by using the tools we’re making available to you, and we urge you to check out our featured weekly podcasts on our Shrine homepage. Our 100th year is about being proactive and setting the stage for another century of fraternity, philanthropy, and support of our hospital system!
We hope you and your prospects were able to make it out for the Sant’Yago Illuminated Knight Parade and look forward to seeing you at the Rough Riders St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Bring your fellow masons and prospects along and show them some of the fun they could be enjoying as Nobles of our order!

Scottish Rite NewsBy Worshipful Casey Fletcher 32°, KCCH
A good story is instructional, thought-provoking and enjoyable.
Stories may entertain or relax us or they might challenge us.
They can be intense mysteries or imaginative fantasies.
Sometimes stories are a comedy, sometimes a tragedy,
sometimes a life lesson.
The Scottish Rite continues the story (stories) of the Symbolic
Lodge. The Eighth Degree, Intendant of the Building, recounts
the story of the selection of the successor(s) to Hiram Abiff . We
were left hanging at the end for the Master Mason degree. The
Hiramic Legend doesn’t tell us anything about the Temple’s
completion or who assumed leadership after our Grand Master
was gone; indeed, the Temple is not completed in the 3rd
degree.
The Eighth Degree continues the story and in doing so off ers
valuable learning moments. Its ideas set us to thinking about
succession planning, leadership, teaching, the importance
of exemplary conduct, cultural continuity and even some
suggestions about the proper relationship of labor and
management. The Eighth Degree is good story replete with
concepts and lessons to contemplate.
The principal characters in this degree are Solomon, who does
not look so wise, and Hiram, King of Tyre, who does.
Five craftsmen are selected to complete the building of the
Temple after the death of the Grand Master: Zelec, Satolkin,
Gared, Yehu-Aber and Adoniram. All fi ve of these Craftsmen
reappear in the Ninth and Tenth Degrees, Elu of the Nine
and Elu of the Fifteen; Satolkin and Yehu-Aber are present in
the lessons of the Eleventh and Twelfth Degrees, Elu of the
Twelve and Master Architect. They are rejoined by Adoniram
to play prominent roles in the Thirteenth Degree, Royal Arch of
Solomon.
Four important, practical lessons are gleaned from this degree:
• the necessity of orderly succession planning, the thoughtful
transfer of power, responsibility and authority; this is a
concept to consider when we next elect a Junior Warden,
• cultural continuity – passing down not just skills, but
traditions and mortality and ethics, perhaps one of the
principal aims of Freemasonry,
• economic order – how management and labor interact; this
degree contains many passages from the VSL and reminds
us to “pay the Craft their wages, if any be due,” and
• what we learn should not die with us; what we learn, we
should share and pass on. Hiram Abiff did not keep his
knowledge to himself – he shared – he taught.
Although the Temple was completed without him – it was
completed as a direct result of the lessons exemplifi ed in this
degree.
The 8th degree is a powerful, instructional degree and is a fi tting
sequel to the Master Mason degree.
The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 PM. At our April 9th meeting, our annual Remembrance and Renewal ceremony will commemorate our Brethren who passed during the last year. The 8th degree will be conferred on August 13th at 6:10 PM. Our next Reunion, for inducting new members, is May 5th and 6th. Petitions are at http://tampascottishrite.org/w/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/tpa-scottish-rite-petition.pdf.
Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He did not get the succession planning thing quite right the fi rst time, so he is in the East again this year.
Hospital Tour Guide NewsBy Noble Frank Harmon, Chief Tour Guide
Joseph Khoury M.D. is one of the fi nest young Doctors in the
country and we are delighted to have him on the medical staff of
Shriners Hospitals for Children Tampa.
At our hospital, he is one of the Orthopaedic Surgeons who
specialize in the “Mehta casting” procedure which was featured
in the Sands Magazine in September of 2017. “Mehta casting”
was developed by Orthopaedic Surgeon Min H. Mehta M.D.,
F.R.D.S. and is a procedure that involves applying a cast that
looks like a plaster jacket around the child’s body. The cast is
applied to the child while under anesthesia and remains in place
for two or three months depending on how well the spinal curve
improves. The procedure may not be applicable to all cases of
scoliosis but, when it is, surgery can often be delayed or not
done at all.
Dr. Khoury is a die-hard Hawkeye having been born and raised
in Iowa City, Iowa. He went to college and attended medical
school at the University of Iowa and did his Orthopedic Surgery
residency there also. His fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedics
was done at the Atlanta Scottish Rite Hospital.
Dr. Khoury’s fi rst job out of school was at SHC in Erie,
Pennsylvania in 2004 but, left in 2007 due to the hospital being
restructured as an outpatient facility. Dr. Khoury then worked at
Children’s of Alabama from 2007 to 2017. Although he enjoyed
that job, he “missed the Shriner way of doing things.” Finally, the
right opportunity and timing presented itself in 2017 to return to
the Shriner system but, this time, in the much nicer climate of
Tampa. Dr. Khoury started at SHC-Tampa in January of 2017 and
says that “it is great to be back.”
Dr. Khoury said “the best thing about being back at Shriners
is being able to focus on caring for the kids rather than
administrative hassles, billing, insurance and all the other things
that get in the way. All that matters is making sure that the
kids get what they need to succeed.” Dr. Khoury sure seems
to understand our mission statement and has a good Masonic
Sands Magazine - April 2018 • 7
working history. Hmmmm, I wonder if he would be interested in
a “square and compass”.
Dr. Khoury enjoys all aspects of Pediatric Orthopedics but
especially enjoys Mehta casting, clubfeet and other foot
problems and caring for kids with Cerebral Palsy. Dr. Khoury said
“in my free time, I like to be outdoors with my family, fi sh, tinker
on and around the house and walk around the neighborhood
with my dog.”
When you see him around the hospital be sure to say hi. You will
fi nd Dr. Khoury to be very friendly and approachable. Welcome
to our family.
Club News
Highlands Shrine ClubBy Noble Jerry Higginbotham
Greetings from the Ridge. It is with sadness that we must report
the passing of two of our members, Nobles Ken Williams and
Nevelle Reynolds. Noble Ken was a Past Master at the Sebring
Lodge and a Past President of the Shrine Club. Noble Nevelle
was from Indiana and while here helped in many of the Shrine
Club activities. Both Nobles will be missed and we send
condolences to the families.
Wow! March was a busy month for the club with our St. Patrick’s
social. We had 26 Ladies and Nobles who displayed their green
for the occasion and of course the meal was Corn beef and
Cabbage. Lady Janette had a very ,. interesting history of St.
Patrick and St. Patrick’s Day. Needless to say a good time was
had by all.
In other March activities, a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser was held
on March 21st which was successful, but details are not available
at this time. Also, planned is a bus trip to the Shrine Hospital in
Tampa for some of our friends that helped us recover after the
hurricane. Based on availability, nobles and their ladies may go
for a fee to be determined. If you and your Lady would like to go,
call Noble Howard Craddock for details and made a reservation.
Noble Howard’s telephone number is 863 453-3615.
We are very appreciative of all our northern nobles and friends
who continue to support our weekly activities of Saturday
Morning $5.00 Breakfasts, fl ea markets, and shrine stores
operations, Tuesday Cards, Wednesday morning coff ees, Friday
Darts and Bunco the 4th Tuesday of the month.
Our April Social will be on Saturday, April 14th. Check the
newsletter for the theme for April. One thing for sure, it will be
a really fun night so make your reservations right away if you
have not already done so. Call the Shrine offi ce and leave your
reservation on the answering machine at 863 382-2208.
Also, Nobles and Masons don’t forget if you are traveling to or
thru Highlands County with a motor home or RV, please keep
the Shrine Club in mind for an overnight stay or longer if you
prefer. We have 4 spaces with electricity and water located
on our grounds in shaded areas. These accommodations
are reserved for Nobles and Masons only, at a very nominal
donation. So nobles and brothers, set your GPS in our direction.
We are located at 2604 State Road 17, Avon Park, and Fl. For
more information, call our club at 863 382-2208, leave your
name & telephone number and we will get back to you shortly.
In closing, we urge all of our Nobles and Ladies to plan to
support your club more in 2018 by helping with activities and
attending the socials, business meeting, special activities, etc.
These activities are planned for you but your support is needed
to have a successful year. Remember, this is your club. Isn’t it
great to be a Shriner! Until next month, God Bless.

Showmen’sShrine ClubBy Noble Chuck Mayo
Another month is gone and only 1/2 of a month to go and our
season will be over. This has been a good year. And speaking
of a good year our bumper cars are back on the road, will most
of them. One of them burnt up on Sunday so we now have 7
until we have a replacement. However, all 7 were on the road in
Plant City’s Strawberry Festival Parade banging and a bumping
into each other. We had a good turnout for the parade and we
all had a great time. By the time you read this they will have
been in a couple more parades, we will have had another work
project and a Appreciation
dinner. Our new President,
John Sutterly is conducting
a very good meeting and
we once again are ending
our meetings with a good
laugh. We look forward to a
great year starting in the fall
and would like to welcome
all Shriners to join us.
Unit News
PharaohsBy Noble Jim Rocha
President Dave Anderson reminds us that our meetings are now
on the 4th Wednesdays at 7:30 at Centro Asturiano. Director
James Lich has a plan for competition next month, but has been
hard to fi nd a place. In the words of Gary Oldman: “never give
in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great
or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of
honour and good sense.”
Lastly, Pharaohs meeting on April 25 in the 2nd fl oor library,
Centro basement beforehand. Peace be with you.
Provost GuardBy Noble Tom Edwards PP
Thanks to all the Guard members and ladies who supported the
February Fair Day at the Florida State Fair. We had a great time
escorting buses, serving hot dogs and cokes, covering rides, and
arranging for the children to enjoy the Fair. The Guard helped
make this a special day for those children and adults. That’s
what we are all about! We also want to thank all the Guardsmen
who supported the Farm Night BBQ Parking Event in February.
What a great time was had by all!
Have you ever taken the time to look at the back of a dollar bill?
It should remind us of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. The
“Great Seal” on the left and the Latin words tell us a new nation
has begun as it emerges from a revolution. Another quotation
around the top of the pyramid says “He (God) has favored our
undertaking.” The pyramid suggests something of Egypt slavery.
At the bottom is a “seeing eye” – a symbol of God’s watch over
a new land of freedom. There are thirteen blocks of the pyramid
to correspond to the thirteen original colonies.
On the right hand side is a fl oral medallion with an eagle on
top. Thirteen stars can be seen and the eagle is a replica of the
America fl ag with a vertical row of thirteen stripes emblematic of
the thirteen colonies.
The eagle once considered the symbol of America holds an
olive branch in one of its talons, the symbol of peace. The
other talon holds either arrows or sheaves of wheat, symbols of
military preparedness or growing industry. Around the head of
the eagle is written “E Pluribus Unum” meaning out of many one
nation. At the center are the words “In God We Trust” which are
words not written by chance.
If you missed the March 21st Provost Guard Covered Dish Dinner
and Meeting you missed a great night out. Green was the color
of the night. Thank you to all the Provost Ladies for their favorite
dish! And a special “Tip of the Fez” to the Chef for a great meal.
It will be a busy April with Stated Meeting, Lodge Visits, and the
2018 Shrine Circus April 12-15. Remember our commitment to
Membership and get those petitions into the offi ce for the Spring
Ceremonial. The Guard’s challenge is to get new members for
the Shrine. Let’s go Guard!
All Nobles in good standing are welcome to join with the Egypt
Shrine Provost Guard. We meet on the third Wednesday of each
month 7:30 P.M. at Centro Asturiano. Come out and join with us.

In MemoriamPassed within the Unseen Temple,
Life is a story in volumes three. The past, the present, yet to be.
The fi rst we’ve written and laid away. The second we’re reading day by day.
The third and last of the volumes three,is locked from sight.God keepeth the key.
