BANDON — The Southern Coos Health Foundation, Southern

Coos Hospital & Health Center, and the commu-nity celebrate the eighth Community Light: Dawn Churchill, owner of A Little Bite.

Nominated twice for her generosity and com-mitment to community, “Dawn has adapted her business model over and over again to adapt to the needs of the community while staying open to be sure that working profes-sionals, home-bound pa-tients and caregivers had access to affordable home cooked meals,” read the nomination.

“She has prepared and distributed home-made meals monthly for the local food bank to distribute to the members of our community who may not be able to afford

to pay for nutritious homemade meals. Since the start of the pandemic, she has promoted and cross-marketed all local businesses and restau-rants to encourage locals to stay and shop local as well as encouraged other businesses to support one another.

“Although working double to cover, having to let two employees go and operating at a loss, she continues to do what she loves and take pride in preparing amazing afford-able homemade food with quality and care.

“Dawn has also been engaged with other small businesses to provide sup-port, advice, and most im-portantly, encouragement during this challenging period. I strongly believe

that Dawn had demon-strated commitment and positive attitude towards the community which was supported by significant actions and activities.”

Another nomination read: “Since the unprec-edented ramifications of COVID-19 and the economic impact it has had on Bandon residents, Dawn has developed creative ways to humbly give back to the commu-nity. She has furnished numerous frozen meals to Coastal Harvest Food Pantry for distribution and was able to offer hot meals to anyone who feels they have a need. As Dawn said, “just let me know. No questions will be asked.’”

While Churchill may be a relatively new transplant

to the Bandon Commu-nity, having moved here only two and half years ago, she is truly dedicat-ed to the community she now calls her own.

“I think the only way we can grow as a com-munity, get through hard times, and rebuild our community is to truly support, empower, and celebrate each other’s successes,” Churchill said. “You can’t expect other people to do good things without doing them yourself.”

COVID fell during Churchill’s month of giving, and every year she goes out of her way to give back and give more.

“I really believe in em-powering and supporting other business owners,” Churchill said.

Modified Cranberry Festival being consideredAMY MOSS STRONGBandon Western World

BANDON — Resi-dents and visitors alike, weary from four months of social distancing and mask wearing to prevent the spread of COVID-19, have been waiting to hear whether the 74th annual Bandon Cranberry Festi-val will happen.

They now have their answer — sort of.

Like most other events and festivals this year, plans have been sidelined due to the pandemic. But Bandon Chamber Board president and Cranberry Festival chairman Antho-ny Zunino, along with Chamber CEO Margaret Pounder, feel that the “show must go on” in one form or another.

The festival, current-

ly set for Sept. 11-13, though that date could still change, has been themed “The Great Cransby — Return of the Roaring 20s.”

“We will have a modified version this year,” Zunino said. “We will have a Cranberry Marketplace with ven-dors but there will be no food or beverage offered. We will not have a main stage with live music, but we are trying to plan other activities that will allow for social distanc-ing.”

Zunino hopes to set up an outside dining area so festival-goers can purchase food to go from local establishments to take to that area.

Zunino said the re-quired rules and regula-tions are just too difficult

to adhere to without a significant increase in volunteers to help maintain Governor Kate Brown’s statewide man-dates regarding the virus.

There will be a Queen’s Coronation where one of this year’s Cranberry Court mem-bers will be crowned. This year’s court in-cludes Hannah Bristow, Kayla LaPlante and Elli Schulz, all seniors at Bandon High School. The princesses have been practicing their speeches and working on their platforms and talent presentations. If group gatherings are still not allowed in September, the coronation will be held in a virtual format and made public for all to enjoy.

This year’s court is

once again chaperoned by Kenzie Basey, a for-mer Cranberry Festival princess who has been chaperoning for the past few years.

“We will have a full coronation this year, but there will be no public appearances at events, since there are no events, and if we can’t have a ceremony, we will have a virtual coronation,” Zunino said. “When we started planning the cor-onation, we could have gatherings of 250 people, but now we can only have no more than 10. But we’re still planning regardless.”

The popular annu-al Cranberry Festival parade will not be held, but Zunino said he anticipates something similar to what the

Bandon VFW organized for the Fourth of July, which involved a festive impromptu car and truck parade throughout town.

The Old Town Market-place will have vendors and possibly other activities as allowed. The Cranberry Bowl football game, however, is still up in the air as OSAA is still determining how fall sports will look. At this point, football may not be held until spring.

A smaller version of a car show and other festival-related activities may still be possible, but again will depend on what is allowed by the state.

“We’re just not will-ing to just give up the heritage and tradition of Cranberry Festival,”

Zunino said. “And I want to have some sort of offering for the commu-nity.”

Zunino said it is a lot of extra work to make sure the event complies with state rules, but he’s determined to hold the festival regardless.

“It’s difficult to plan,” he said. “We will have to throw some plans togeth-er and fly by the seat of our pants. We’re just not willing to give it up.”

Ideas and suggestions are welcome — people can email them to Zunino at [email protected]. Volunteers are al-ways needed as well.
