Parish News:

St. Mary’s Prayer Shawl Ministry: We will meet on Wednesday, February 22, at 1 pm in the Community Room at Silverpointe Apartments. We welcome new members. Knit/crochet/goodies. If you have any questions contact Lana at 353-7714.

Knights of Columbus and the KC Auxiliary Meeting: On Thursday, February 23, we will begin with Mass at 6:30 pm. Our meeting will follow at 7 pm. The District Deputy will be attending our meeting this month.

Ash Wednesday, Wednesday, March 1: Mass times for Ash Wednesday are 8:15 am and 5 pm. Also, on Ash Wednesday we are honored to have Nic Davidson join us at St. Mary’s to share his faith on the “Call to Discipleship.” He will begin his talk after our 5 pm Mass. We would like to invite everyone to join in the wonderful opportunity.

Lenten Soup Suppers: Love to cook? We are in need of volunteers to prepare meatless soups for our Lenten soup suppers that are held before Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent. If you are interested in preparing a soup or providing bread, please sign up on the sheet in the back of church or contact Cindy in the Parish Office. The soup suppers not only warm you up inside before Stations, they are also a part of our Rice Bowl program. The soup supper is free but we accept donations for the Rice Bowl program.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): If you know someone who has expressed a desire to join the Catholic Church, either as a non-baptized person (catechumen) or an already baptized person (candidate), please encourage them to contact Cindy in the Parish Office at 218-226-3100.

Snow Angels: Thank you so much to all who have volunteered to help with weekend snow removal! It is the great teamwork that makes it possible to keep our sidewalks safe. We need more volunteers to sign-up to adopt a weekend of snow removal. Please sign up in the back of the church.

Spaghetti Dinner: A BIG THANK YOU to EVERYONE who helped make our Spaghetti Dinner a HUGE success! We couldn’t have done it without everyone's help, whether you purchased tickets or offered your time baking, serving or cleaning up after the meal. It was awesome to see the kids and adults having fun, working together to get everything done. God certainly blessed our efforts to give to the poor.

Little Rock Bible Study:

Our next study “The Passion & Resurrection Narratives of Jesus” will begin on Sunday, March 5. This 7 week study compares the particular insights found in the passion and resurrection accounts of the four gospels. The core of our faith incorporates both the pain of the cross and the hope of the resurrection into daily living. This study is designed for both newcomers and experienced Bible students; we would love for new members to join us! Cost will be $25 for supplies, but couples may share supplies if they’d like. We meet Sunday evenings, 6:30-8 pm in the Parish Hall. If you have any questions, contact Cindy in the Parish Office or Gerry Bahar at 353-6008, he will lead our study.

Based on member recommendations, St. Mary’s has received $1,218 in charitable outreach funding in 2016 through Thrivent Choice Dollars. Thrivent would like to remind members with Thrivent Choice Dollars - You have until March 31 to allocate your dollars. Fr. Steve’s Teaching for Consideration: Imputability and Sin

“If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life

for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for

that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.” -1 John 5: 16-17

You’ll remember that in last Sunday’s bulletin, we continued to lay the important groundwork necessary for regular discussions in future bulletins on the teachings of our Catholic faith. Last weekend, I spoke about objective moral truth- the fact that there are certain human acts and behaviors that are right and certain acts and behaviors that are always wrong or evil and, thus, can never be justified. I gave the example of abortion as an example of such an evil act. But, you may also recall that at the end

of the article, I made the clarification that while an objectively evil act, such as abortion, is always and everywhere wrong and can never be justified, the imputability of the act may be more or less grave. But what is imputability? Imputability is the level of moral responsibility before God that a person bears for their action. In other words, imputability refers to how serious of a sin a person has committed. Some acts are always gravely wrong objectively speaking, but they may not always be considered to be a mortal or grave sin for the person who committed such an act. Let me give you a simple example. As parents, you know that it is one thing for your child to accidentally knock over the snowman that his brother built in the backyard. It’s another thing for your child, not knowing who built it, to decide to knock it over anyways. And it’s a whole different story and a much more serious offense for your child to knock over the snowman in the backyard because he knew that his brother built it- in order to hurt his feelings. The discipline in each scenario would be different in degree because the intent was different. Sin works the same way. There are two types of sins that we can commit: mortal sin and venial sin. Mortal sin is when we turn completely away from God by consciously committing a grave offense, such that it cuts them off from the life of God’s grace and would cause them to lose their eternal salvation if they died before repenting of that sin. A venial sin is simply a sin that is not serious enough to be considered a mortal sin- it doesn’t break our relationship with God and doesn’t directly threaten our eternal salvation. In order for a sin to be a mortal sin, three conditions must be met simultaneously- the action in question has to be an objectively grave offense against God or neighbor or self; then we also have to know that it’s a serious offense, and freely choose to do it anyways. Thus, a person may commit a grave offense, but due to circum-stances, it may not actually be a mortal sin for them. They may not have either had sufficient knowledge that the act was gravely wrong, or they may not have been acting in freedom. For example, a person may not have known, through no fault of their own, that to intentionally miss Sunday Mass without a serious reason is a grave offense against God (which it is), and therefore they didn’t have the sufficient knowledge that the act was wrong for it to be a mortal sin for them. Or, they may have not been able to get to Mass because they had to take care of a very sick child, and there was no way for them to get to Mass otherwise, which means they were not acting freely- they were compelled to miss by the sickness of their child. Thus, no mortal sin was committed. Why is this so important? Because in the coming weeks and months, as we discuss Church teachings, some of our discussions will revolve around what is right and wrong. And it is important to understand the difference between an act being objectively wrong, and it being mortally sinful. An act being objectively wrong is independent of circumstances or conditions- it is always a wrong act to have an abortion- there is no circumstance or condition that could make it an acceptable act to choose. However, the imputability of an act- whether it is a mortal or venial sin for the person who committed it- can depend upon circumstances and conditions, i.e., was the person in question sufficiently free in their decision to commit the act? Did they know the act to be seriously wrong? In either case, what is the same is the availability and effectiveness of God’s tremendous mercy. And that’s very important for us to keep in mind as well. Often times, we may not like discussions about right and wrong and Church teachings because if we have done things that we shouldn’t have, we may feel guilty. But remember, knowing the truth never harms, it only helps. And also remember that our God waits for us in the sacrament of penance to relieve us of the burden of our sin, whether it be mortal sin or venial sin, and to heal our wounds with His infinite love. Catholics at the Capitol on Thursday, March 9 is the first annual gathering of Minnesota Catholics in St. Paul to bring our values to our legislators. It is a time to join Minnesota's bishops, dynamic speakers and Catholics from across the state for a day of prayer, advocacy and inspiration. The day begins at River Center in St. Paul, with Mass at 8:00 am, and the morning session begins at 9:00 am. A bus will depart from the Cathedral parking lot at 5:00 am. Registration for Catholics at the Capitol is $20 for adults, but free for ages 18 and under. In addition to registering for the bus, you must also register for the event. Holy Spirit, Two Harbors

Lector Training:

There will be training for Lectors (Readers at Mass)

after each Mass (Saturday night and Sunday morning)

on March 3rd and 4th. All current lectors are required

to attend one of these two training sessions. Training

sessions will last about 10-15 minutes. If you are not

currently a lector and would like to become one, please

attend this training in order to be added to our list of

Lectors. Thank you!

Thursday Morning Discussion Group:

What is God’s will for you? Do you know how to hear

His call? Are you looking for something special to do

during Lent to grow closer to God? Please join us

Thursday mornings after Mass during the Lenten

Season, starting March 2nd, as we learn how to discern

God’s will for us. We will view the DVD series, “Saying

Yes,” by Fr Albert Haase, and discussion will follow.

Coffee and a light breakfast will also be served. Stations of the Cross:

The praying of the Stations of the Cross will take place

every Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. during the Lenten

Season, beginning with Friday evening, March 3rd.

Please plan to join us to walk the way of the cross with

our Lord!

THE LENTEN FISH FRY IS BACK!!

This Lenten Season, Holy Spirit parish will be hosting

two Friday evening fish fry's. In order to properly plan

and serve these fish fry’s, we will once again need a

dedicated serving crew to make it a success. There will

be an organizational planning meeting for this year’s

fish fry’s on Sunday, Feb. 26th, in the Church hall,

immediately following the 11:00 am Mass. If you are

willing to help with the fish fry, and wish to volunteer

time, resources or services, please plan to attend.

Coming Home Basket

The basket located in the vestibule (Church

entrance) on the right side is a “Coming Home

Basket.” Anyone who knows of someone who has

drifted away from their Catholic faith is encouraged

to write the name of the person on a sheet of paper

located in front of the basket and place the paper

inside the basket. As a faith community we are

encouraged to pray for the people whose names have

been placed in the Coming Home Basket as well as to

encourage those who have drifted away to return.

Eucharistic Adoration

We have Eucharistic Adoration every Friday 9:00 am

until noon. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of the

church to be certain that someone is always in

attendance during the time of Exposition. If you are

available during this time, please consider signing up

to spend an hour with the Lord in prayer.
