PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear parents and members of the Essex Heights community,

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Bahasa Indonesia

Our children are so proud of the work they are doing in Indonesian that they cannot wait to show me their work. It is so good to hear the children read and speak so well in Indonesian. Bu Sarah is trying to teach me too. I know that I am a slow learner but with constant visits from our students I am sure that I will eventually improve. Congratulations everyone.

Highwood Court Aged Care Visit

The Junior School Council visited Highwood Court Aged Care to bring some Easter cheer to the residents. From all reports, the visit was such a success that the school has been invited to visit at any time. The children had Easter eggs, which they distributed to the residents and then spent time talking with

them and playing games. Before they left a few very mischievous bunnies visited me to let me know they were leaving. Our School Captain, Isabelle D, needs to be especially recognised because it

was her initiative that made this visit possible. Thank you to Ms Capsalis for organising the whole excursion and to Stephanie Wendler-Canning for assisting with the transport of the children. This is another example of the outstanding Essex Heights community.

Working Bee

Last Sunday our first working bee for 2018 was held at school. It was great to have so many parents turn up to help out. The vegetable patch was turned over, fruit trees planted, the chicken coup was raked out, and there was weeding and mulching done all over the school. I think that the grounds look beautiful. A visitor commented upon our marvellous grounds when they came this week. Special thanks must go to Ina and our sustainability guru, Marita Steward, for their organisation and commitment to improving our grounds. Thanks also to the School Council Grounds Committee and all who attended the working bee. All families who attended were recognised at our assembly this week. Thank you for giving up your time and making a difference.

Practice Evacuation

At Essex Heights we always look after the health and wellbeing of our students. An important aspect of that is being prepared for emergencies. We conduct a different form of emergency drill every term so that we are always as prepared as we can be for an unexpected event. On Tuesday, the whole school practised a full school

evacuation to the council oval. I can report that all children were accounted for and the exercise was completed quickly and effectively. Some of our parent volunteers were also involved in the evacuation. Well done to everyone. I hope you all have a happy and safe Easter and holiday period.

May your football team win, unless they are playing Melbourne!!! Go Dees!!!

See you all in Term 2. George Perini

Twelve members of the Junior School Council visited Highwood Court Aged Care in Burwood on Wednesday afternoon. The students dressed up in Easter costumes and provide the residents with some fun, game playing, jokes, presents, as well as singing the Essex Heights song. The residents were absolutely thrilled to see the students and they were particularly impressed with the Essex Heights values and beautiful manners displayed by all the

students.

Everyone smiled and laughed happily as a few 'bunnies' were hopping around the recreation room bringing Easter joy to all.

Many thanks to Isabelle D who approached the JSC with the idea of visiting Highwood Court to make the residents happy. The JSC were so happy to oblige and went to great lengths to dress up and make origami flowers, chatterboxes and cards. It was a lovely gesture initiated by Isabelle and embraced by the JSC. Thanks also to parent Stefanie Wendler-Canning for providing her car to assist in transporting the students to Highwood Court.

It truly was a heartwarming experience for residents and staff at Highwood Court, as well as for myself, and particularly for the students.

Maria Capsalis on behalf of Alexandra O'Connor and the Junior School Council

We entertained the residents with fun games and jokes. Each resident received a present and they were very happy. They loved the school song and were very impressed by the costumes and we wish we could go back some day.

We went to Highwood to make the people happy. We dressed up as something Easter. Most of the students dressed up as Easter bunnies.

Wednesday 28th of March was the day 12 students brought some happiness into the Aged Care Centre to brighten up the resident's lives a little. As we arrived we were greeted by some lovely staff. We started with the school song as a performance. After that, we were allowed to socialise with some people. Many had handmade gifts such as origami and

chatterboxes and chocolate eggs as a gift for the residents. The residents and staff strongly agreed that it was such an amazing time for everyone.

We handed out chocolate eggs, fake eggs with a cute pattern on them. We made origami and chatterboxes to make people feel happy and appreciated.

A few students from Essex Heights visited Highwood Aged Care Centre to make the people who live there feel happy and appreciated. The students dressed up as bunny

rabbits and handed out Easter eggs and fake ones too. We played cool games and handed out origami cards too.

On the 28th of March, I played chess with Vic, one of the men at Highwood. He told me that he hadn't played chess since he was in the Navy 54 years ago! He won the match and then Graham, another resident played checkers. We left the game there for Vic and Graham to play and we will pick it up later.

A very big thank you and congratulations to the following students who enthusiastically contributed in bringing some Easter joy to the residents of Highwood Aged Care, and for making yourselves and the school so proud: Isabelle D, Emma Q, Lucia C, Aardit M, Liam G, Jacob C, Jane L, Elaine P, Caitlin D, Umme V, Dejan R, and Michael M.

HEALTH & PE: STAYING ACTIVE THESE HOLIDAYS Coordinators: Elisha Cotterell & Amy Hipwell

Dear Parents,

School holidays can be a daunting time for some people, trying to keep the kids busy and active, without getting bored. Its great timing that Active April begins this weekend, which is encouraging families to get at least 30 minutes of activity per day.

Here are some tips for staying active this holiday break:

Go for a family bike ride (don’t forget your helmets!)

Go on a nature walk

Head outside and kick/throw a ball

Skip rope

Scoot around the driveway/park

Fly a kite

Take a remote control car/plane outside

Jump on the trampoline

Visit the zoo/aquarium

Go swimming at an indoor pool

Put on some music and have a dance in the lounge room.

Go for a walk along the beach (collect some pretty shells)

Organise a good old fashioned game of hide and seek for those rainy days.

If you register for Active April and join our team you’ll get a lot of free passes to fun activities around Melbourne including 10 passes to any YMCA location. Check out the flyer in this issue and how to register and don’t forget to join the Essex Heights PS team.

I hope you all have a safe and active holiday break!

Amy Hipwell PE Teacher

Essex Height PS is participating in Active April this year. This is a great opportunity to get active with your family, especially during the holidays! Please see the poster for all the fantastic things you get when you register. It’s completely free, so please visit www.activeapril.vic.gov.au and use Team ID: essex-heights-ps, and request to join our team. You can download the app for free and track your activities each day. It’s simple to use and a great excuse to get the kids outside! Please contact me if you have any questions.

ArtSEL Nikki Olsen

This month, our school wide theme is empathy. In our morning announcements and school assembly we’ll be reminding students to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect same and different feelings, and show compassion. Compassion involves saying kind words or doing something helpful to show you care how another person feels. When students can identify, understand, and respond in a caring way to how someone else is feeling, it helps create a positive and accepting school climate.

ArtSEL lessons specifically teach about empathy. You’ll be receiving Home Links describing why empathy is important and including fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify feelings and practice showing empathy and compassion. We hope you find them helpful.

Please tell your child’s teacher or Nikki if you have any questions about how you can help your child learn to identify feelings and show empathy and compassion at home.

INTER SCHOOL SPORT FINALS Coordinators: Amy Hipwell, Elisha Cotterell & Ben Wooster

Congratulations to the boys softball team who placed second in the Mulgrave District on Friday last week. They fought a tough battle against Mount View to earn the runner up pendant. The umpire said that this was the best primary school softball game he had ever seen! There was some exceptional fielding during the game and they all put in 100%. The boys should be very proud of their excellent effort both in the finals and throughout the season. Well done!

Murid Bagus - Good Student

Each week in the Indonesian program, many students show respect and are an outstanding example of how to behave. When students are displaying the school values in the Indonesian Room, they are invited to put their name and an Indonesian word into the 'Murid Bagus' (Good Student) box.

The number of names in the 'Murid Bagus' box is growing rapidly! It is so wonderful to continue to see so many students displaying the Essex Heights values in their learning in the Indonesian Room!

Congratulations to Rudraksh (5WO) and Joanne (2G) for being drawn out of the 'Murid Bagus' box this week.

Rudraksh's word is 'fokus' which means both 'focus', and Joanne’s word is ‘liburan’ which means ‘holiday’, a timely word!!

I encourage you to discuss your child’s learning in the Indonesian program: which day their class attends Indonesian, some words they know, and cultural aspects of Indonesia they are interested in. I'm sure they would also love to share ways in which they are displaying the Essex Heights values throughout their learning.

Prep Passports

On Wednesday 28th March, the Indonesian Captains visited the Indonesian Room to support the Prep students in filling out their first few pages of their Indonesian passports. They wrote their name, age, and some greetings in their passports. We all had a great session! Here are some of the phrases we are working on:

Nama saya ....... (My name is ......)

Selamat Pagi (Good Morning)

Halo (Hello)

Umur saya ..... (My age is ......)

Sayembara Lisan - Speaking Competition

The Sayembara Lisan Indonesian Speaking Competition is on Saturday 12th May. Thank you to those students and parents who have given permission and emailed me their preferred time slot. I have been overwhelmed with the response.

The registration for this year's competition is now closed, and I have registered those students who have confirmed on Compass with Huntingtower School.

The links for Prep to Year 4 are below. Students will choose one song to perform. They are encouraged to practise the colours and numbers as well as their chosen song. Five minutes per day of

practice is preferable:
