Amy Kiah enters her 17th season as the head women’s soccer coach at Wofford in 2015. Her tenure is the second longest among the Terrier head coaches, following only football’s Mike Ayers. In-cluding two years as an assistant coach, this season marks Kiah’s 19th total campaign on the Wofford sidelines. During the 2014 season, Kiah led the team to a 7-11-0 record while claiming back-to-back Southern Conference tournament quaterfinals appearances. Two Terriers in Hannah Washko and Rachel Fenner were named to the All-Southern Conference Fresh-man team. Additionally, the team broke the single-game record for goals (10) and points (28) in a 10-0 shutout of Chattanooga. Under the direction of Kiah in 2013, the Terriers finished 8-5-6 overall and made their first appearance in the Southern Confer-ence tournament since 2010. After defeating UNCG on penalty kicks in the first round, Wofford advanced to its first Southern Conference Championship Quarterfinals appearance since 2002. The successful season for the Terriers saw four players selected to All-Conference teams, including Maggie Bosley, who was only the third Wofford women’s soccer player named to the first team since Hall of Famers Brigid Meadow (1997) and Heidi Best (1997 and 1998) earned their honors. To add to a successful season in 2013, the Terriers had a stifling defense that allowed 0.63 goals against average for the season. The team’s 0.55 goals against average against Southern Confer-ence opponents was ranked first in the conference. Her players demonstrated great academic success as 12 players were named to the Fall 2013 Academic All-Southern Conference Team. Kiah also earned her 100th career victory as a coach in a 5-1 win over Chattanooga (10/6). In 2012, the team posted a 6-10-2 overall record. The team showed great academic success as the Terriers had 10 players named to the Fall 2012 Academic All-Southern Conference Team. The 2011 campaign saw the Terriers post s 8-7-2 record, the squad’s best season since 2004 when Coach Kiah’s team went 8-8-1. Although the team was unable to make the SoCon tournament in a competitive season, the Terriers had seven players selected to the Fall 2011 SoCon Academic All-Conference Team. Coach Kiah’s 2010 team recorded seven wins and captured a berth to the Southern Conference tournament. The team went 7-8-4 overall, posting the most wins since the 2007 season when the Terriers finished 7-11-2. In the 2010 offseason, Coach Kiah pushed for her student-ath-letes to be involved in the Spartanburg community. She chal-lenged each academic class to create new opportunities for the team to volunteer their time with organizations amongst the community. The rising seniors raised money by signing the team up for a “Kick it for Cancer” tournament which helped raise money for the Gibbs Cancer Center located in Spartanburg, South Caro-lina. The rising juniors signed the team up for a Habitat for Hu-mantiy house and went to a site just down the road from Wofford College and helped build a house. The rising sophomores involved the team in the Miracle Baseball League, which is an organization that brings together special needs children of all ages in the area and enables them to play baseball. Coach Kiah looks to make the off-season community service an annual tradition for her upcom-ing teams. Kiah became the first Wofford women’s soccer coach to eclipse the 50-win plateau when the Terriers earned a 1-0 home victo-ry against eventual Southern Conference Tournament champion Western Carolina Oct. 2, 2005. With the Terriers’ 4-0 win over Canisius Sept. 5, 2003, she be-came the program’s all-time winningest head coach and with a

career tally of 88, she eclipsed the mark of 35 by Josef Lorenz (1995-98). Wofford’s first-ever coach was Dr. Jhon Akers, who compiled 10 wins after starting the team in 1994. Kiah arrived in Spartanburg in 1997 as an assistant coach for Lorenz. She took over the reigns of the program in the fall of 1999 and led the Ter-riers to a school-record 13 victories in her first year. Under her direction, Wofford has remained competitive in the Southern Conference, advanc-ing to the league tournament on numerous occasions. She coached another All-Southern Conference honoree in graduated senior Jessica Connett following the 2006 campaign. Connett, also a Phi Beta Kappa inductee, became the seventh all-league choice under Kiah out of the nine total Wofford has produced since joining the league in 1997. The Terriers were also one of four Wofford athletic teams in 2006 to receive initial Academic Progress Report (APR) recognition from the NCAA for outstanding academic achievement. Kiah had the honor of being on the sidelines for the Terriers’ dou-ble-overtime 2-1 triumph at The Citadel Oct. 6, 2006, which marked the 100th overall victory in the history of the program. A native of Atlanta, Ga., she attended North Carolina and played for legendary head coach Anson Dorrance. At Chapel Hill, she was a member of the team that captured three consecutive national titles from 1992-94. On the 1992 and ’93 teams, she was a key reserve at forward and was teammates with U.S. National Team and future World Cup and Olympic champions Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly and Tisha Venturini. After redshirting the 1994 campaign, Kiah transferred to the College of Charleston and garnered 1995 first-team All-Trans America Athletic Conference honors. Kiah also has seen time on the semi-pro level by playing with the Charlotte Speed of the W-League. As a member of the Speed, she topped the team in goals and was among the squad’s leaders in assists as well. She sent the 2003 top Terrier point producer, Jaime Cutts, to the W-League where Cutts was a member of the Carolina Dynamo. While still living in Atlanta, Kiah was a member of the Blackburn Unit-ed U-19 club team which captured the 1992 Georgia state championship. She is also a mainstay at a variety of summer camps throughout the Southeast, including the North Carolina Girls’ Soccer Camp and the Ralph Lundy Soccer Academy in Charleston, S.C. A 1999 graduate of Converse College, she is married to Wofford director of athletic facilities Andy Kiah. The couple has two daughters, Kayleigh, born in 2004, and Mikenna, who was born in 2010. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s soccer team fell to Coastal Carolina in the 2015 regular season opener by a score of 2-1 on Friday night at Snyder Field.

The Terriers jumped out to an early lead on a goal from sophomore Hannah Washko and took that lead into halftime. The Chanticleers proceeded to score two goals in the second period, with the game winner coming from freshman forward Tara Lyons in the 81st minute.

Washko scored her goal in the fifth minute after senior midfielder Mary Beth Bleekrode passed her a ball into the box. Washko drilled the ball on the ground past the diving Chanticleer keeper into the back left corner of the net.

The Terrier defense held strong against the Chanticleers in the first half, denying the visiting team any shot attempts. Wofford extended this feat into the 56th minute.

Chanticleer defender Mikayla Williams scored on the first shot attempt for Coastal Caro-lina. Williams tapped it in goal from left to right after Lyons blew past a Terrier defender and passed Williams the ball.

Back-and-forth play ensued before Lyons eventually scored the game-winner on a rebound off Terrier keeper Alex Carroll. In the scramble for the ball, Lyons knocked it into the left side for the goal.

Wofford outshot Coastal Carolina, taking seven shots in each period. Meanwhile, the Chanticleers scored on two of their four shot attempts for the game.

Chanticleer keeper Becca Austin recorded the victory and posted four saves in the contest. Carroll took the loss for the Terriers in her collegiate debut.

The Terriers return to action Monday night at Snyder Field against Charleston Southern. The match starts at 7 p.m., and admission is free.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s soccer team played a hard-fought match with Charles-ton Southern Monday night at Snyder Field, which ended in a 2-2 tie after two overtime periods.

Sophomore Katie Beuerlein opened the scoring for the match, driving home a ball past Charleston Southern keeper Liz Amanda Brown to put Wofford up 1-0 at the 15-minute mark. Senior Lucy Etro was credited with an assist, giving Beuerlein a long leading pass into the box.

Wofford took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but could not hold the lead past the 60-minute mark. Buccaneer sophomore Anna Sells recorded the first of two goals for the match in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Lydia Frierson touched the ball to Sells in front of the net, drawing Terrier keeper Alex Carroll out and giving Sells a touch shot into the left corner.

The Terriers would strike again within four minutes of giving up the lead. Freshman Hayley Young-iner scored her first career goal on a hard grounder past the keeper into the back-left corner of the net. Freshman Emma Fletcher notched her first career assist on the Younginer goal.

After back-and-forth shot attempts for each team, Sells blew by Terrier defender Kendall Stanley and knocked her second goal into the back right corner of the net to tie the game up at two with 9:30 left to play.

Neither team could convert on opportunities in the overtime periods, which led to the eventual tie.

Wofford head coach Amy Kiah was pleased with her team’s effort Monday night.

“I thought we did some really good things and created quite a few offensive chances,” Coach Kiah said after the match. “Defensively at times, we looked really good. We just had some breakdowns, so we’ve got to stay connected. I’m excited about where we are headed. We got quite a few players some time and they stepped up. We’re excited about that and looking forward to the next game.”

Wofford outshot the Buccaneers 21-12 for the match, and both teams finished with five corners apiece.

Both Carroll and Brown add a tie to their records. Each also recorded five saves with two goals allowed.

Wofford next plays on the road at Gardner-Webb Friday night. The match starts at 7 p.m.

CLINTON, S.C. -- The women’s soccer match at Presbyterian College was post-poned in the middle of the second half after severe weather rolled through the area.

The teams had completed the first half at a scoreless draw before lightning forced players and fans out of the stadium area with about 39 minutes left in the match. Playing conditions were already affected by rain that rolled through the area earlier in the day. Power was temporarily lost at the field before the match was officially called.

No make-up date has been announced. If the match is rescheduled, the game will restart from the beginning.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three goals in the first half and another two in the second led to a 5-1 women’s soccer defeat at the hands of the #13 ranked Clemson Tigers Monday night at Snyder Field. Down 2-0 at the 32’ mark, midfielder Mary Beth Bleekrode gave the Terriers (0-2-2) a jolt of life with her first goal of the season. A foul in front of the box gave the Terriers a free kick, which midfielder Emily Gaid lightly passed right to Bleekrode. Bleekrode then took a dribble to her right and smashed the ball past a line of Tiger defenders and keeper Kailen Sheridan into the back left corner. The goal was the ninth of her career, and it was the first assist of the season for Gaid. Tiger forward Alana Hockenhull kicked in the first Clemson goal at the 20’ mark. Hockenhull knocked the ball in off a rebounded shot attempt by defender Emily Byorth. Nine minutes later, forward Salma Anastasio scored her first of two goals in the match. Defender Claire Wagner gave Anastasio a long pass over the middle of the field, and the forward touched the ball to spin it over Terrier keeper Alex Carroll and into the net. The Terriers fought hard and battled the rest of the first half. In the waning minutes however, Clemson midfielder Katie Sprouse bicycled in a goal off a Samantha Staab throw-in to give the Tigers a 3-1 halftime advantage. Anastasio and forward Miranda Weslake chipped in the last two goals for Clemson at the 62nd and 84th minute marks respectively. Midfielder Catrina Atanda recorded an assist on Anastasio’s goal while Staab notched her second assist of the game on Weslake’s score. Overall the Terriers were outshot in the match 30-7 and took only one corner kick compared to Clemson’s six attempts. Terrier goalkeeper Alex Carroll set a new career-high in the match with 11 saves in the losing effort. Tiger goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was credited with the victory. Wofford now moves to 0-4 all-time against ranked opponents. Bleekrode’s goal was the third such goal scored against a ranked opponent, with the other two coming in a 2003 loss to #17 Duke Univer-sity. It is also Wofford’s third loss against Clemson when the Tigers are ranked in the top 25. The Terriers have over a week off before next taking the field. They travel to Florence, S.C., September 15 to take on Francis Marion University at 7 p.m.

FLORENCE, S.C. – The women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the 2015 season Tuesday night, defeating the Francis Marion Patriots on the road 1-0 at Hartzler Field. Senior midfielder Lucy Etro scored for the Terriers in the 30th minute that proved the difference in the match. Sophomore midfielder Brooke Leftwich crossed the ball from the right side to Etro in the box. From seven yards out, Etro nailed home the goal past Patriot keeper Taylor O’Berry. The goal was Etro’s first of her career, and it was also Leftwich’s first career assist.

The other storyline from the match was a strong performance from the Terriers’ defense. Wofford only allowed one Patriot shot attempt in the match, a high shot from senior forward Janise Finney in the 37th minute. Wofford also did not allow a corner kick opportunity for the Patriots in the match. Freshman goalkeeper Alex King was credited with the victory in her collegiate debut. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The women’s soccer team gave up a last-second goal in the second overtime period as the Davidson Wildcats defeated the Terriers 2-1 Friday night at Snyder Field. Davidson midfielder Vicky Bruce scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats with one second left on the game clock. Bruce pushed a hard grounder past Terrier goalkeeper Alex Carroll from the left side of the box into the back right corner of the net for the score, her second of the season. Wofford put the first point on the scoreboard in the 10th minute, as midfielder Hannah Washko fed a pass to fellow midfielder Hayley Younginer at the top of the box. Younginer fired a shot that sailed over Wildcat goalkeeper Kendall Thomas and into the net for her second goal of the season. It was Washko’s first assist of the season as well. Trailing all through the second half, Davidson created opportunities to try to tie the game but were unable to convert through the majority of the second half. With seven seconds left in the match however, a free ball allowed defender Dani Johnson to slide past the Terrier defense with only the keeper to beat. Johnson touched the ball past Carroll and tied up the match at 1-1 with her second goal of the season. Wofford had a prime opportunity to score a go-ahead goal in double overtime, as defender Kath-erine Whisenhunt shot a corner kick into the box with four minutes left in the period. A scramble in front of the net however ended with Younginer receiving the ball back near the top of the box and shooting it wide right of the net. Overall, the Wildcats outshot the Terriers 22-8 in the match and took nine corner kicks compared to the Terriers’ two corner kicks. Thomas earned the victory for the Wildcats, playing all 110 minutes in net and recording three saves. Carroll took the loss for the Terriers, also playing all 110 minutes in net with five saves. Whisenhunt and defenders Hanna Socha and Clare Robinson played all 110 minutes of the match for the Terriers as well. Johnson was the only Wildcat positional player to stay in for the entire match. The loss drops Wofford’s all-time record against Davidson to 3-16-4. Wofford last beat Davidson back in 2003, when the Wildcats were still a member of the Southern Conference. The Terriers (1-3-2) take a week off before hitting the road for their next match against Chattanoo-ga to open conference play September 25. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The women’s soccer team opened Southern Conference play against the Chattanooga Mocs with a 2-2 tie Friday night at Finley Stadium. Midfielder Mary Beth Bleekrode tied the match for the Terriers with six minutes left in regulation. She deflected a pass from fellow midfielder Emily Gaid past goalkeeper Katie Emig and into the net, sending the game to overtime. In the overtime periods, both teams had chances with clear shots to win the match but the defenses held strong. Wofford’s best chance to win it came with three minutes left in double overtime. Gaid streaked down the middle of the field and fired a left-footed shot that a diving Emig got her glove on to prevent the winning goal. The resulting corner kick did not produce a shot for Wofford. “I thought we fought hard tonight,” head coach Amy Kiah said after the game. “We’ve been here before, to get it to double overtime we knew what it took. We fought from the beginning to the end, but we got to put the ball in the back of the net and fix a few little things. We’re not focused on the little things and that’s what’s important.” A few minutes into the match, consecutive corner kicks for the Terriers led to early scoring chances for Wofford, but Chattanooga blocked all three shot attempts resulting from the corners. A free kick opportunity provided Wofford the first goal of the match. Defender Rachel Fenner launched a long, arching shot from the left side of the field over Emig in the 7th minute, giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead. It was Fenner’s first goal of the season and the second in her career. The Mocs then answered at the 15’ mark. Forward McKenzie Gregg received a pass from defender Emily Moseley and fired a long shot from 25 yards out that starting Terrier keeper Alex Carroll got a glove on. Despite Carroll’s efforts, the ball popped backward into the net to tie the game 1-1. Chattanooga was the first team with a scoring chance in the second half. The Mocs drew a corner kick at the 52nd minute mark, but Liner, who replaced Carroll at halftime, punched the ball safely out of the box. Mocs midfielder Skylar Brewer then sprinted past the Terrier defense to draw out Liner out at the 64’ mark. Brewer passed the ball from the right side to the middle, where midfielder Abby Linder was perfectly set up to tap the ball into the empty net and give the Mocs a 2-1 advantage. Weather played a factor in the match, as rain hit the field before and during the game causing slick conditions. Both teams had trouble keeping possession of the ball on the ultra-fast playing surface. Overall, Wofford outshot Chattanooga 29-14 in the match and took six corners compared to the Mocs’ four corners. Liner was credited with the tie to her record, the first decision of her career. She played 65 minutes of the match and recorded one save. Carroll notched three saves in the first half. Emig finished the match with 11 saves for the Mocs and adds a draw to make her record 2-5-2. The draw snaps a five-game winning streak for the Terriers against the Mocs that dated back to the 2010 season. The Terriers (1-3-3, 0-0-1 SoCon) continue their road trip Sunday, when they take on conference foe Samford in Birmingham, Ala. That match is set to start at 2 p.m. CT.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A first-half goal for the Samford Bulldogs was enough to defeat the women’s soccer team, as the Terriers fell 1-0 on the road Sunday afternoon at Samford Soccer Stadium. The Bulldogs (7-4, 2-0 SoCon) found the back of the net in the 34th minute. Forward Taylor Borman passed a ball from the left side to forward Sara Smeltzer in the box. Smeltzer shot the ball past Liner into the back right corner of the net for her first goal of the season. The Terriers (1-4-3, 0-1-1 SoCon) struggled offensively, as the team only took three shots in the match, all of them coming in the second half. Samford meanwhile had 20 shot attempts and seven shots on goal. Samford also won the corner kick battle, taking nine corners and not allowing the Terriers a single corner attempt. Samford started the match on the offensive, as forward Malcanisha Kelley crossed the ball into the box two minutes into the match. Defender Hallie Georgi got a shot off, but Terrier goalkeeper Mayson Liner was able to cover up the ball for her first save of the match. Liner made her first start in net for the Terriers and finished the match with a career-high six saves, including a few late saves that kept the Terriers in the match. She is now 0-1-1 for the season. Wofford had a couple of chances to equalize in the second half. At the 60’ mark, midfielder Hannah Washko pulled off a couple of moves in the midfield before dribbling down and taking a shot from just outside the box that went wide right. A little over 10 minutes later, midfielder Mary Beth Bleekrode touched a lob shot that went over Bulldog keeper Katie Peters, but a Samford defender was able to kick the ball out of play before it could travel into the net. Peters was credited with the victory for the Bulldogs, playing all 90 minutes in net but did not record a save. Wofford’s all-time record against Samford now falls to 0-7-3. The Terriers are on a six-game losing streak to the Bulldogs that dates back to 2010. The Terriers next hit the field Friday, returning home for a match at Snyder Field against SoCon-foe VMI. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Mary Beth Bleekrode converted a penalty kick goal to give the women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute Friday evening at Snyder Field. A handball in the box called on a VMI defender gave Wofford the penalty kick opportunity in the 74th minute. Bleekrode lined up the shot and hit a line drive that got past Keydet keeper Darien Dunham for the goal. The goal was Bleekrode’s third of the season and the 11th of her career. It was also the third game-win-ning goal of her career. Weather conditions played a big factor in the game, as both teams played through consistent rain and windy conditions. The match’s start time, originally scheduled for 6 pm, was moved up to 5 pm to try to get ahead of the incoming storms. “I think the girls responded well to that,” head coach Amy Kiah said after the match. “We had kind of been on our toes the last 24 hours hoping we could get the game in, and they were ready to compete.” The first half went scoreless, as both teams had scoring opportunities but could not put the ball past either keeper. Each team had three corner opportunities in the first half as well. VMI (4-8-0, 0-3-0 SoCon) had two good chances to equalize in the last 10 minutes of the match. Midfielder Sam Boney had an open shot on goal in the 83rd minute that Terrier goalkeeper Mayson Liner was able to save, and Keydet forward Olivia Cotton followed up two minutes later with another shot on goal that Liner stopped. Overall in the match, the Terriers (2-4-3, 1-1-1 SoCon) outshot the Keydets 15-7, but both teams took six corner kicks in the match. “VMI is a great team,” Coach Kiah said. “They battled for 90 minutes and the girls expected that. We came out knowing we’d have to have a good game to put this one away.” Liner was credited with her first collegiate victory in the match, playing all 90 minutes in net while recording four saves. Dunham took the loss in net for the Keydets, also playing all 90 minutes of the match while notching eight saves. Wofford is now 4-0 all-time against VMI, not allowing the Keydets to score in any of the four matches the teams have played. The win also secures the team at least a tie for fourth place in the Southern Conference standings. The Terriers next play Sunday, as the team hosts SoCon-foe UNCG at Snyder Field. That match is set to start at 2 p.m.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Two second-half goals from UNCG forward Chesney White downed the women’s soccer team Monday night at Snyder Field, as Wofford lost to UNCG 2-1. The Terriers (2-5-3, 1-2-1 SoCon) took an early lead in the first half. Forward Katie Beuerlein received a long pass on a free kick from defender Katherine Whisenhunt, which the forward handled and blasted past UNCG keeper Chloe Buehler into the back left corner for her second goal of the season. Whisenhunt earned her first assist of the season (fifth of her career) on Beuerlein’s goal. Wofford took their 1-0 lead into halftime, but UNCG (4-7-3, 2-1-1 SoCon) went on the offen-sive in the second half, as the Spartans outshot the Terriers the rest of the match. White scored her first goal to tie the match in the 67th minute. She received a free ball from Candice Forbes that drew Terrier goalkeeper Mayson Liner out from the goal box. White launched a high line-drive shot that hit the back right corner of the net for the game-tying goal. White would score the game-winner at the 72nd minute, as defender Zoe Fishman fed her the ball from the left side. The forward was able to receive the ball in the middle of the box and shoot it past Liner’s outstretched hand into the center of the net for the winner. The Terriers had a couple of late chances to tie the match but were unable to convert on their opportunities. Their best opportunity came in the last minute, when a corner kick from Whisenhunt found midfielder Hannah Washko in the box. Washko’s shot though was stopped by Buehler to preserve the win for UNCG. Overall for the match, UNCG outshot the Terriers 17-15 and took five corners compared to the Terriers’ three corner attempts. The Spartans were called for 13 fouls though compared to the Terriers’ two fouls. Buehler finished the match with eight saves and the victory, while Liner took the loss for the Terriers while recording two saves. Wofford remains winless against UNCG, going 0-21-3 all-time against the Spartans. It also drops Wofford’s home record this season to 1-4-1. The Terriers next take the field Friday, as the team travels down the road to face SoCon rival Furman in a 7 p.m. match at Stone Soccer Stadium.
