Welcome to our Spring/Summer brochure which is packed full of entertainment.

I’m delighted to have taken over as Artrix’s new Director. So much has been achieved in the last 10 years at Artrix and I’m very much looking forward to working with staff, Trustees and volunteers to ensure that opportunities to participate in arts and culture are available to as many people as possible.

This year we celebrate our 11th birthday and, as we enter our second decade, our focus will be on continuing to deliver an exciting and varied programme of events, attracting new audiences and engaging with young people. Our Next Decade event on 28th April will showcase the work of young people and demonstrate our commitment to the next generation of artists and performers. With the support of Arts Council England, we have been able to extend our programme of family entertainment this season and are thrilled to be able to showcase work from regional theatre and dance companies specialising in work for children, young people and families.

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to our 10th Birthday appeal so far, we have almost reached our target of £10,000 which is a fantastic start to Artrix’s next decade. Hannah Phillips Director

PAUL SINHA presents

POSTCARDS FROM THE Z LISTPaul returned to the Edinburgh Fringe in the summer of 2015 after a four-year, self-imposed exile during which real life had taken over. Looking back, life as a travelling single gaysian delivering lefty, liberal jokes was quite straightforward. Now he has to juggle the responsibilities of being an uncle, being in an actual relationship for the first time in twenty years, and being that bloke, from that quiz, in that poorly-fitting white suit. It’s not easy.

BIRMINGHAM REP presents

FOLKWinnie’s no ordinary nun. A swearing, smoking Guinness fan, who loves a sing-song with Stephen. She lives life to the fullest. But she’s got a secret. Stephen’s lost his job – and lost his way. Finding solace in music, he knows he must start again… but how? Ballsy and outspoken, teenager Kayleigh is in charge of her life. No one tells her what to do. However, a mind-blowing discovery leads her to Winnie and Stephen and together they start a journey that will transform their lives forever. Surprising and poignant, Folk is a hilarious and not-so-holy story of hope, coming together and finding your feet when your world is turned upside down.

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE presents

HANGMEN (15)

Encore Screening

In his small pub in the northern English town of Oldham, Harry (David Morrissey – The Walking Dead, State of Play) is something of a local celebrity. But what’s the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman – Peaky Blinders, Death at a Funeral) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn – Clouds of Sils Maria) lurk with very different motives for their visit.

TEA AND TENACITY presents

TINNED GOODSSue and Rachel have not spoken since the miners walked out three months earlier. With their friendship suffering from the strain of politics, picket lines and principles, forgotten wrongs resurface and loyalties are pushed to the limit. In this tight-knit town, as the miners’ wives move from background to centre-stage, can the women find a voice in a battle to save their relationships and their way of life? Tinned Goods features a cast of women playing multiple roles. With its historical context and pacey dialogue, it will entertain and provoke thought in equal measure.

A sensational new dance event for cinemas from the internationally acclaimed choreographer Matthew Bourne and his Dance Company New Adventures, The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera Carmen and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in classical music, brilliantly arranged by Terry Davies. The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.

It never occurred to me I needed to meet her to ‘find out who I was’, as it didn’t seem likely I’d discover I was someone different to who I thought I was. Could it turn out I was three stone lighter than I thought, or I spoke Italian or supported Arsenal or had a fear of Liquorice Allsorts? MODS VS ROCKERSMods vs Rockers is a spectacular music event where two great bands battle it out together on stage to see which musical style will come out the winner. Both bands will take to the stage together to trade tunes and see whose music should be crowned as the best of the 50s and 60s. Are you a Mod or are you a Rocker? Are you a Rocker? Does your world rock to the sound of the rockabilly beat? Then don your leather jacket, rev up your bike and show your support for the fabulous Del Ray Rockets, bringing to life the sounds of Elvis, Eddie Cochrane and all the kings of rock n’ roll. Or are you more of a Mod? ROYAL BALLET LIVE presents

GISELLELive Screening

Giselle is the quintessential Romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and continues beyond the grave. For the ballerina this is a role of two contrasting halves: in Act I she must appear naïve and artless, her dancing alive with an earthy enthusiasm; in Act II she transforms into light and air, her dancing so ethereal as to seem weightless. In Peter Wright’s production, the dual aspect of the ballet is perfectly achieved: the first act dramatized in rich, naturalistic detail and the second with a spectral, moonlit beauty. HUNTER AND THE BEARHunter And The Bear’s love of classic rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Band shines through in both their song-writing and live performance - a powerful blend of folk, rock and country, with strong vocal harmonies and soaring guitar lines. Starting out as a duo, long-time friends Jimmy Hunter (lead guitar/mandolin) and Will Irvine (guitar/lead vocals and nicknamed “The Bear” at school) ended up at the same university in Newcastle writing songs together before heading south to London in 2012 in pursuit of gigs.

TOM ROBINSONKnown in the 70s as an anti-racist and LGBT campaigner, Tom has released 19 albums with various bands between 1975-2001. He’s now an award-winning presenter at BBC Radio 6 Music. Inspired by the new artists he has championed through his BBC Radio 6 shows, Tom Robinson has returned with his first new album in twenty years Only The Now. The songs are as vibrant and edgy as any he’s ever written: the sound of a veteran craftsman – drawing on his long, rich fund of experience – with a renewed energy and purpose. His career started in 1975 and he enjoyed chart success fronting his own Tom Robinson Band (TRB) with hits such as Glad To Be Gay, 2-4-6-8 Motorway and Up Against The Wall.

THE CHARLIE CHAPLIN STORYChaplin - The Charlie Chaplin Story is a heart-warming and powerful musical tale of the first true British icon of cinema. This fascinating story weaves through Chaplin’s early journey as a young boy through the dark streets of Victorian Vaudeville London to the glitz of early Hollywood. Featuring an all star West End cast including Steven Arnold (Ashley Peacock in Coronation Street), Nicole Faraday (Bad Girls, Emmerdale), and a full array of amazingly talented Actor-Musicians (‘Once’, ‘Buddy’, ‘The Commitments’), this beautiful and hilarious musical play follows Chaplin through his early career, showbiz ambitions and often-fractious relationship with his mother, family and his first love. An untold story too fascinating to be missed!

Artrix is a charity and we are committed to supporting the next generation of artists and audience members as we enter our next decade.

Alongside its varied calendar of performances and screenings, Artrix has a vibrant Learning and Engagement programme which works with all ages in the community, in schools, colleges and youth groups. Our Family Fun Festival, which runs every summer, offers children the opportunity to take part in a variety of free activities. Many local young people perform for the first time on the Artrix stage either with our Youth Theatre Company or at one of our Summer Stage Schools. Please help us to continue this important work and enable us to undertake further more challenging projects with marginalised and vulnerable young people.

Our fundraising target for this year is £11,000, and we need your help to achieve that goal.

All donations will go towards supporting our projects with young people.

You can donate at the Box Office, online at www.artrix.co.uk or via the donation boxes in the foyer. If you are a UK tax payer, don’t forget to gift aid your donation too.

Thank you!

PAUL A BOND: Paintings In A LifeWednesday 30th March – Sunday 24th April

Artist Statement: “Art at school was a nightmare because I could not do “real”. But throughout my adult life there has been this urge to demonstrate some of the infinite variety of patterns, mostly from my own head. Lately, wishing to depart from geometric constraints after 40 years, real-world patterns have formed the starting point e.g. a collapsed fence and even marrow peelings. There seems no danger of running out”.

DAVID CONSTANTINE: Urban Shadows - 5pm & Everything AfterWednesday 27th April – Sunday 22nd May

The new body of work by David Constantine focuses upon the re-emergence of the bearded man in popular culture, and the portrayal of masculinity in modern day society. David is a contemporary abstract/portrait painter hailing from Worcestershire. Specializing in what he describes as urban portraiture Constantine’s style was built on the UK streets and later refined at Wolverhampton University and his Black Country studio.
