SOCIAL MEDIA AND NHS

MINA [email protected]

[email protected] JUNE 2013

WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is not names like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Social media is referring to the technology that allows users of it to share their thoughts, work

and multimedia, and comment on others’ content. Social media enables

you to become part of different networks of people with similar

interests. (NHS Employers, 2013)2

SOCIAL MEDIA AND CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Through the appraisal system and learning and development team, HR directors often have an overview of the continuing professional development (CPD) requirements of staff.

As online taught modules have begun to

change the face of healthcare teaching, social media is set to do just the same.

(HR Employers, 2013)3

EXAMPLES OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE NHS

Many healthcare professionals join in chats on Twitter, or ‘tweetchats’ as they are known, to discuss topics of importance to them.

ORIGINAL 23THINGS

The original 23 Things program which ran at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County in the US in 2006 is the route of all

subsequent 23 Things programmes.

9

The aim was for staff to spend a little time each week exploring online tools for communication, publicity and productivity. Each

week new things were posted for participants to do. Each participant

recorded their progress on their own blog.

Sot23Things programme was an enjoyable journey for University of

Southampton library staff . The library staff had an opportunity of exploring and developing their

existing skills about different tools of Social Media and Web 2.0

technologies.

12

OUTCOME

In this journey library staff contributed to the Sot23 Things and learned from each other.

Some of the Things were new to some of us and known to others.

Some of the Things were fun for some but boring for others.

13

It surely raised library staff awareness

about the most popular Web 2.0 technology and social media tools.

14

Are you ready for practising some of the most popular

Social Media Tools?
